About The daily sun. (Columbus, Ga.) 1855-1873 | View Entire Issue (March 11, 1857)
spaiLy sun. Wednesday Morning, March lx, 1857. The eteainer Gen. Stokes departed on yes- | terday eveniug for Apalachicola. The steamer Ben Franklin arrived at our wharf on Monday night last, and departs for Apalachicola to-morrow morning. • We understand there is about 8J feet water in the channel of the river. ♦ Mr. J. W. Pease has our thanks for the February number of Blackwood’s Magazine. Terms of the American edition, $3 per annum. The weather has been quite cool, aud the streets of our city rather sloppy for the past few days. We perceive that some ot our merchants are receiving a portion of their new Spring stocks. W r e suppose the cool weather prevents them from making the fact known to our readers. To Correspondents. Citizen can gain all the information ho desires on the subject, from the Solicitor of the City Criminal Court. In our opinion there is as much injustice in selling a slave a gallon of liquor as there is in selling him a drink.— We can see no equal justice in punishing the retailer, when the wholesaler is not noticed. Your complaint that the law as carried into execution operates only on a few, when the majority of large transgressors escape fine, may be true. It is the sworn duty of every officer to show no fear, favor, or affection ir. the performance of his official duties ; in other words, equal punishment should be visited on like ofleuces. It is a usual rule, though we doubt its utility, to bestow half the tine on the informer. ‘‘4th Ward.” According to our understan ding of the law, no negro slave has a right to carry on a business of any kind, on his or her individual account. We agree with you, that allowing slaves to hire their own time, is a great evil. There is a legal remedy, and the Solicitor of either Court will give you rules for proceeding against such instances as you cite. “Thirsty.” We see no way to evade the “Sunday restriction.” If you cannot afford to buy a jug full every Saturday night, and thereby assume an independent position, you had better join “the Sonnies.” Asa matter of course, bar-keepers can give away their fluids on the Sabbath, but as there is neither pay, reason nor fun in it, the habit is rapidly falling into disuse. On the whole it is a good law for such saloon keepers as desire to attend divine service on the Sabbath, to say nothing of the money a man may save for the purchase of family supplies on Monday. That’s our say, Mr. “Thirsty.” “Female Pedestrians ” We know of no means by which the city can be compelled to widen the sidewalks. We presume il’ the mer chants and grocers will remove the boxes and barrels now adjacent to their stores, aud the ladies evince a similar proclivity by dressing on the principle of multum in parvo, there will be no actual use for the lateral enlargement of the city pathways. We trust for the sake of peace there will be a mutual disposition to ef fect an amicable compromise. Distressingly Quiet. Our city is quite peaceable at present, and therefore, no local news of interest is to be found. Our Mayor, magistrates, bailiffs, judges, and sheriffs are throwing themselves back on the dignity of their titles, and con gratulating themselves on the pacific demean or of the sovereigns. Nobody will get mad— nobody can be frightened —no one seems to have money enough to oiler any inducement to light fingered gentry—nobody’s horse will runaway—no one will mysteriously disappear —the watchmen will not fall asleep—the tap sters are hugging closely to the cash system— people keep their chickens cooped, their pigs penned, their smoke-houses locked, and their bridles hid. The Jailor has no more room for incumbents, and in fact wc are having a per fect calm of peace, after such a hurricane of crime. We allow our children to play with those of our neighbors as usual, and feel as safely secured from harm, under the Presidential rule of Buchanan as we did under the guardian care of Gen. Pierce. Postscript.— Since the above was in type, we are confidentially let into a secret ot great interest. We learn the eyes of some of the police are widely open upon some suspicious characters, whose movements arc very curi ous. We expect a full development of the matter, and will give it as soon as the time of pledged secresy expires. In the meantime, let every one keep a careful eye on their prem ises; and on all persons who are loafing about our corporation, without any visible means of support. _ Rail Boad Biot. We learn that a few days einee a serious riot took place on the Fernandina Hail lioad, in Florida. The particulars of the affair, as far as we could learn from a gentleman who arri ved in this city, yesterday, areas follows: Some slight misunderstanding took place ne tween a countryman and a laborer on the road in relation to a horse race. The affair ended in a light, and the parties were separated.— Some hours afterwards the friends of both par ties made arrangements for a conflict on ft more extended scale. The countrymen, arm ed with rifles and guns, made an attack ou the railroad men, when a severe ba,ttle ensued, du- ; ring which one man was killed and a number wounded on both sides. The railroad men , were defeated and driven from ‘heir ground some of whom made their escape ®j themselves in the neighborhood, ‘ a ‘ rived in this city by yesterday s eteamcr.- The parties engaged in the no , vi. formed, numbered from forty to fifty on each side. In consequence of tbi unfortunate af fair, our informant learned that the work the road had been temporarily suspended. , Savannah News. The Democracy of Missouri, in Convention, have nominated K. M. Stewart as a candidate for Governor to fill the vacancy occasioned by the election of Governor Polk to the Unite States Senate. FOR PRODUCING HAIR ON BALD HBADS, AND RESTORING GRAY HAIR, TO THE NATURAL COLOR. fTWIIS astonishing aud uuequaled preparation has nev JL er failed to produce a growth ou Bald Heads, when used according to the directions, and turn hair back to its original color, attar having become gray, and rein state it in all Its original health, lustre, softueis, and beauty. Removes at once all scurf, dandruff, and un pleasant itching, scrofula, eruptions and feverish heat from the scalp. It also prevents the hair from becoming unhealthy and falling off’ and hence acts as a perfect HAIR INVIGOUATOK AND TONIC. We annex a few certificates to corroborate our asser tions. State of Illinois, OarMt, June 27,1853. I have used Prof O. J. Wood’s Hair Restorative, and have iniuiir-d its wonderful effect. 51y hair was becom ing, as 1 thought permanently gray, but by the use ol the Restorative, It has resumed its original color, and, 1 have uo doubt, permanently so. SIDNEY BULKSK, Ex-Senator United States. A gentleman of Boston writes to his friends ia New Bedford thus; To your inquiries, 1 would reply, that 1 first commenc ed using Pro! Wood's Hair Restorative,my hair was al most white and had been so for the last ten years, and It was very thin ou tho top of uiy head, and loose, mid pulled out treely; hut 1 luund that before I had used all the second bottle, (which was eight weeks,) my liair wus entirely changed to its original color, (light brown) and is now free from dandruff, and quite moist. 1 have had my hair cut five or six times since the change, and have never seeu any thing like w hite liair starting from the roots; and It is uow as thick us it ever wus, and does not come out at all. it has prevailed in luy case all that I could wish to ask. Yours, etc..—— July 1,1856. Gardiner, Maine, June. 22, 1854. Dear Sir; 1 have used two bottles of Prof. Wood’s Hair Restorative, and can truly say,it is greatest discovery of the age, for restoring and changing the liair. Before us ing it, I was as gray as a man of seventy. My hair has now attained its original color. Y’ou can recommend it to tlio world, without the least fear, as my case was one of the worst kind. Yours, DN 51UBPHY. St. Louis, March 7,1854. Prof. Wood: 51y hair commenced falling off some three or four years since, and continued to do so, until I be came quite huld. 1 tried all the popular medicines of the day, but to no effect. At lnat 1 was induced to try your celebrated liair Restorative, and am happy to say, it is doing wonders. 1 have now a fine growth of young hair, undcheerfully recommend its use toall similarlyalilict ed.
