DA.11.-5T STJlsrr~ Thursday Morning, March 19, 185 T. The stoauier OHwichee, Capt. Vaa Veghteu, arrived at our wharf last evening freighted with about 8,000 barrels of assorted merchan dise. Scaut five feet water in the channel. Flour Reduced. We call attention to the reduction of prices at the Palace Mills. See advertisement. Dancing to Steam Music. The Montgomery Messenger, in reply to va rious inquiries on the subject, auswereth that it has it in its power to state that the St. Nich olas, with that steam music, will be back there on Saturday morning, about 8 o’clock, barring accidents and Providential interposition. They are promised a telegraphic dispatch, giving the exact minute of her arrival, of which they will give their readers timely notice, that they may be on hand to join in the grand cotillon to come off on the wharf. We of the Sun, suggest that the aforesaid readers who intend to participate in the cotil lon as before mentioned, will appear armed and equipped as convenience directs. On ac count of the plenteousness of mud on the wharf at Montgomery, it would be well for the ladies to don the trousers which they virtually wear, and tho gallant males to roll up their pauts as far as the knee, and pitch in barefooted, so the dance could proceed without any serious in terruption. What a fine opening the wharf will present for anew brick yard. Come Montgomeriuns, do not let a little mud prevent you from being as gallant as you have credit for abroad: On with the dance! whilst music’s sound Delights the fair and gay, To its sweet notes go waltzing round, Through boggy mud and clay! On with the dance! delighted throng! Blow Callioiie! lire up, you loud mouthed musical institution, and with full throttle, go it strong! An Apt Reply. We find the following in an exchange : “ Madam,” said a doctor one day to the mother of a sweet healthy babe, “ the ladies have deputied me to inquire what you do to have such a happy, uniform good child.” The mother mused for a moment over the strauge ness of the question, and then she replied, simply aud beautifully : “ Why God has given me a healthy child and I let it alone.” The doctors are good men at heart, and often give medicine to children whose parents consider and mistake any little indisposition in their otf'spring as serious sickness. Instead of giving them a good and thorough rinsiug in soapsuds, and administering a plateful dose of kitchen physic, nothing will do but a doctor with his pills aud squills, plasters and drugs. The great alarm of the parents, and the ina bility of the helpless babe to speak, are deemed a good cause to commence tampering with the little tender patient, until He who gave it as a boon to cheer its parents, takes it back to Heaven to be enfolded with the inno cent and pure in spirit. The Athens (Ten.) Post learns that some of the Knoxville money changers have been ex tracting pretty largely from the vaults of one of the Branch Banks at Athens; but the Post is not advised that anybody is very indignant about it. It says the brokers should be care ful how they run on Knoxville Banks, or they may get up another “bust.” The Panama Massacre. A letter from Washington says the Govern ment has received telegraphic advices to the effect that the Hon. Isaac E. Morse, who was appointed Commissioner on part of the United States to arrange the settlement of the diffi culty with the New Granadian authorities, growing out of the dreadful riots at Panama, has thus far failed in his negotiations, nor does there appear to be the slightest prospect that any satisfactory arrangement can be ef fected, unless the most decided measures are taken on the part of the United States. It is understood that Mr. Morse has for warded to the Government the result of his labors, aud much interest is felt to learn what course the new administration will pursue. It will be remembered that our former Commis sioner, Hon. A. B. Corwin, was also unsuc cessful in his mission, and that one of his recommendations to our Government was the the entire Isthmus, and placing it under the control of the United States. Whether Mr. Morse will advocate the same decided measures remains to be seen. The subject is one of great importance, and the action of our Government will be anxiously looked for. Beware of Office. Someone, who has evidently seen not a lit tle of the ways of the world, gives the follow ing wholesome advice in relation to accepting public office. We commend its considerate perusal to that large class of hungry expect ants in every community that seem to do ail immense business on a very small intellectual capacity: , “When a wild animal once tastes human flesh nothing can ever after, says Uuffon, <,ls ” suade him from human slaughter. hen a politician once obtains a public office, no per suasion can ever induce him to go to work, at anything but a nomination for another and an other, during the term of his natural existence. If you want to spoil a good tor ten years, secure him a berth in the Custom House. He will never be socially a well man afterwads. Send him to Congress and you ru in him for life. He may carry around placards and tickets at the polls, accept a subordinate Situation in the police, or run errands for the door-keeper of a political meeting house, but he will never have independence enough to emancipate himself from bis morbid appetite for the “spoils,” and go to work like an honest mail and a Christian.’ Tribute of Respect.
