DAILY SUN. Friday Morning, March 0, 1857. Ladies, Attention! We call the attention of the lady readers of the Sun, to the Masonic invitation to be found in another column. Substantial of Life. Messrs. R. M. & E. L. Gray advertise in to day’s paper, a large amount of Tennessee Ba con, and Rio Coffee. These, with the largo stock of flour they have on hand, will give them a turnpike road to people’s hearts which it is said lies through the mouths of mankind. Life Insurance. We call attention to tho advertisement in an other column, of the Manhattan Life Insurance Company, of which Mr. 11. H. Epping, of this city, is the agent. This is matter in which all have a deep interest. Recollect, it is not pro posed to insure the prolongation of the life of any one, but merely to secure, for a small sum, a competence to the wife and children after the death of a husband or father. To know that one’s wife and little ones are beyond want will be a happy consolation on the dying couch. Think of this, readers of the Sun. The Tine Arts. We were shown yesterday, a very ingenious piece of work made of sheep skin or binder’s leather. It was a picture frame, about fifteen by eighteen inches in size, resembling carved rose-wood; and is the production of Miss Huu gerford, who proposes to give instruction in the art, to the young ladies of this city. The work may be seen at the residence of C. My gatt, Esqr. LATEST FROM NEW JERUSALEM. Meeting of Infuriated Antagonists. “Gentlemen may cry peace! pence!! but there is no peace.” “When Greek meets Greek, then comes the tug of war.” On yesterday a little ayont the hour of twelve, as we were hurrying homeward for our mid-day meal, the sounds of the word “hom bog! kombog! 1 hombog!!! ” arrested our at tention. It proceeded from the stentorian lungs of one of those individuals who does the business of selling “so goot as sheep cloding as never was prought to dis down.” He was making fun at some adjacent rivals, who were putting up anew sign. Smith was replied to by his insulted rival Keller, and taunt followed taunt; the lie was speedily given and as quickly returned. Obscene language, insult ing to the public thereabouts, and to females passing at the time, was freely and vociferous ly used, and crimination, and re-crimination of the charges of theft and swindling, continued, and on Smith drawing near to Keller’s door, caused a combative meeting of these “cloding” merchants. After attempting to fight with stretched arms and open digits, each party ran for a land biscuit, but so great was the hurry, and so intense the anger of the disputants, that instead of furnishing themselves with a rock or brick bat, they grabbled haudsfull of sand and let it fly with all their strength and vengeance. “Whilst the simoon of gravel was going on at a fierce rate, policeman Simons came up and separated the infuriated warhorses. We could not help smiling at the novel way that Simons fired at the rear of Smith. Keller was con ducted to his store, and we suppose the matter will be settled by each party taking out a peace warrant for the other, or in their way of expressing it: “bail ’em mid de jail.” Justice Quin was early on the ground of ac tion, and did all he could to throw “oil on the troubled waters.” We heard the Colonel, in remonstrance to the belligerents, remark: ‘‘lt is a shame that a nation, against whom it is said, all the world is in hostile array, should have dissensions, heart burnings, and angry blows among themselves,” (we are of the Colo nel’s opinion) and the quieted parties, went to work again to sell “so sheep cloding as never vas!” We have done with chronicling spring fight number this, and trust the Mayor will inflict the heaviest penalty, for the obscene language vised on the occasion. Docket cleared, spring fight number next set down tor review and trial. For the Daily Sun. Things about Town. Rambling through the streets of our fair city not long since, in the broad sunlight of day, I saw and noted several things which l thought very unseemly for so beautiful a city as Columbus. 1 passed by a fine dwelling, With a richly variegated flower garden in front --a beautiful rose bush grew near the fence, and there I saw a voracious old red cow open her greedy jaws and bite ofl those beautiful branches, which in May would have laden the zephyrs of spring with an aroma exquis itely delightful. Our shade trees are a great ornament as well as useful to our city, yet I saw three cows __old Red, Old Brindle, and Old .Spot attack a beautiful mulberry and skin it almost bare Wherever there aro so many children, and protty dears too, it is almost impossible to keep the front gate closed—this nccounts for the drove of swine I accidentally discovered in the flower garden of one of our lady citi zens, and it was enough to make a crocodile Hhed real tears to witness the havoc they jnude with the hard labor of that lady, lake n good hearted Samaritan, as I am, 1 turned the swine out, and would have driven them down a steep place into the Chattahoochee if 1 had not known they could swim across to Girard and treat them the same way. 1 Ktrolled up town, and there I saw a white ■yearling, without any horns, pitching into a erocer’s Irish potatoes extensively ; of course I drove the calf ofl", and the grocer smiled his thanks But see that poor negro from the country. How nobly he stands his ground to defend his fodder from near about a dozen pi ratical cows. He has hallooed “ lluc go way do* bias yer,” until he has grown hoarse and ns he goes one side to drive off an attackin KtuatMhe other side is being pitched into Very unceremoniously- But I hear a yelling up about the fish stands ; there I sea• ■■ g'jjjj old sow has concluded to ll I Rve ,’ l Vlo h n man per, and the fish seller, hard hearted man, will not let her have it. . Now Messrs. Editors, are not these curious items for a city like Columbus; but 1 have luance i rwe are indebted to “Rambler for his Contribution, and will accept his articles if written on one side of the paper, and are as short and interesting as the above initial.J COMMERCIAL. Dear Sir; I have used two bottles of Prof. Wood’s ilair Restorative, and can truly say, it is greatest discovery of the age, for restoring and changing the hair. Before us ing it, 1 was as gray as a man of seventy. My hair has now attained its original color. You cun recommend it to the world, without the least fesr, as my case was one of the worst kind. Prof. Wood : My luiir commenced falling oil some three or four years since, and continued to do so, until l be came quite bald. 1 tried all tho popular medicines of the day, but to no effect. A. 0. WILLIAMS, 133 Second street. Itusin , Mich., Any 2, 1805. This is to certify that one year ago, I was quite gray, and my hair so thin upon the top of my head, that 1 feared its entire loss. In this condition, 1 applied for aud obtained a bottle of Prof Wood’s Restorative, and before 1 had used one quart bottle, the gray hairs. luik entirely disappeared and it had thickened up, so as to be as full as usual ami it assumed a glossy ap| earuncc, apparently more beautiful than ever it was before. I do, therefore, cheerfully recommend it to all those ladies who value a beautiful head of hair. 1 will also state t hat 1 use it now, occasionally, for it* healthy and beautify ing effect. SARAH J. The few gray hairs 1 had, have entirely disappeared. Other* of my family have used it, and concur with me in pronouncing if nil it professes to be. 11. A. CLARK. Michigan Avenue.
