DAILY SUN. Tuesday Morning, March 31, 1857. Had Better Refund. We are requested to inform the magnificent and extravagant young gent who had “ nothing less than a Twenty, ’ after purchasing some small article from one of our merchants, and getting change back, the immediate necessity of redeeming the bogus bill, passed off by him, otherwise, he will be added to a large delga tion of representatives, now officiating at Mil ledgevilie. Quick Work. One day last week a car containing five thousand feet of rough lumber left Woodruff & Goetchius’ Saw Mills, twenty-six miles from Columbus, at a quarter after eleven o’clock in the forenoon, came to town and was drayed to Goetchius Steam Planing Mills, dressed and jointed, and was drayed to, and placed on board of a steamboat, by sunset of the same day, bound for Apalachicola. Just think of it! Under the dispensation of old fogyism, it would have taken five wagons, five men and twenty mules at least two days, to have driven it to town at five times the cost of Rail Road conveyance. It would have taken seventeen men a whole day’s hard work to have planed it, or one hand seventeen days, at a much larger cost. It might appear, and it has been said, that by the substitution of machinery, hand labor ers would be thrown out of work. The result does not prove it. In former times Barringer & Morton and Goetchius used to employ from five to ten hands each, and then did all the work which was required. Now they employ forty or fifty men each, in their Machine Shops. Increase the facilities and you increase the demand. We understand that there are now eleven steam engines in operation in the city. These, with the water-power by which the Flour and Cotton Mills are propelled, show a part of the industrial agencies of the city. A Word to the Ladies. The ladies we know will not neglect to read the advertisement of Mrs. Dessau, who has the credit of being up with the latest fashions in Millinery goods. Her fine taste, and the high character of her patrons, give proof of her ability to please the most fastidious. In fact she can come as near making a beauty more beautiful as any one within our knowledge. More than a Swindler! John P. Copeland, who was put in jail a few days since for swindling a countryman out of an ox, is found out to be a very dangerous char acter. He sent an order by some visitor, who concealed it from the jailor. This is a copy: Henry—l want you to bring me one pair of light shoes and some more clothes; bring me one candle, a few matches, my pocket book, a viel of aquafortis—secretly put that in my vest pocket. Then farewell Columbus, lam going home to-morrow morning or at dinner. I shall look for it sure. Bring me some shoes that will cost about $1 50 or .$1 75. Be particular about that aquafortis—put it in my vest pock. This note by accident was returned with the pocket-book, and allaskedfor in the note. The bundle, on being searched by the jailor, contain ed a vial of aquafortis. His pocket-book contained sll6 in spurious bank bills, and $4 25 in good money, besides notes and other papers, among which was a receipt for pay ment of a bull he had killed, knowing the same ■did not belong to him. The following is a copy of the note sent back with the bundle of clothes : John, I had a particular friend to tell me that it would not do for me bring the things, and 1 collect what I am owing you, haint got it, but if you make the trip come over here and I will have it all in a few days. By the vigilance of the jailor it will be seen that Mr. Copeland has not so perfected his ar rangements, as “to make the trip,’ or “bid farewell to Columb'is.” We hope, however, our law enforcers will do something with this bull killer and ox swindler, and thereby give him for the benefit of his health, a voy age of pleasure to, and a protracted residence at Milledgeviile. Having had so many per sons calling to sec Copeland, the jailor is una ble to determine who acted as messenger. THE CASH SYSTEM. MRS. DESSAU, No. 108 Broad Street, Columbus, Georgia.
