Coming down the aisle at Temperance llall, one night last week, making for the door at the conclusion of the Arctic Exhi bition, we were much alarmed by what we first took to be a “strike” from a black snake. A couple of ladies had just worked their way from the pressure be tween the seats, and on entering the aisle, the whalebone, which had just been too much crowded, became disengaged and pitohed full length toward us. No one was hurt. Scripture on Hoops—Explained. A fair writer of Eatonton is out in the last Savannah Republican in explanation of the meaning of the passago of scripture quoted by us recently. This Eatontonian defender of modern inflation says : From your paper of last week, I find the men, not satisfied with ridiculing that great preserver of female constitutions, ••hoops,” have at length brought forward scripture to assist in putting them down. The text quoted reads thus : “In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their combs, and their round tires like the moon.” Now the misfortune is, it did not occur to these worthy expounders of the Bible that “tires” meant anything more or less than whalebone. Disliking to see such wrong construc tions palmed off on the public, I shall proceed to give the true meaning of the passage, as explained by a learned author. The dress of the Hebrew ladies, and ladies of the East generally, was very expensive; the wearing of ornaments was carried to great excess. One of these were a costly necklace, often hung with bottles of per fumes. Also crescents, or little moons of siver or gold, were suspended from them. These are what the prophet meant by “ round tires like the moon,” instead of “ hoops.” Iu conclusion permit me to say, that as long as men wear their poor old mothers’ shawls, and “pants so tight they can’t sit down,” they had better leave the ladies to their “hoops” in peace and quietude. One of the Injured. Eatonton, . Ga., April 21. What this lady says of shawls and tight pants, is, in our opinion, a just rebuke, and we are pleased that she has opened on this great innovation and indelicacy. We always had an aversion to tights—or extremes in anything. The distended skirt, when not to excess, we very much admire; it is not to this class we object, but it is to such that enables two ladies to monopolize a twelve foot pavement. — We are a great admirer of the ladies, and nothing pleases us so well as to see them gayly attired with flowiug skirts, when extremes are avoided. A decided im provement in this respect has receutly become observable, which shows that good taste is on the advance. For the Daily Sun. Things About Town—No. XX. Did you see the buggy runaway with tho—l should say, the horse toddle off with that buggy, the other day ? Well, 1 did—saw him strike the wheel against a post aud upset it—thought really he had been taking a smasher- —and being dry, wanted another without a fly—which caused him to head for Boulter’s, where he “shucked” himself—but he didn’t go in, owing, I suppose, to the fact, that he knew he’d have to stand treat for hands all round—and as the crowd was consid erable, he felt it would be more than a horse could do, to treat all hands. And there was no “hollering” neither. Wasn’t this “ hextronary ,” as Widow Bedott would say. I thought of roy good friend up town, who would have treated all hands to have seen the catastrophe. Fortunate ly no lives were lost except a little negro boy slightly wounded. The crowd of sympathising citizens soon gathered around the buggy aud commented freely as to its narrow escape from a smash—turned the wheels and were satisfied that the axles were all right. After mature deliberation upon the evidence adduced before them, of the cause and effect, the verdict was, It was a pity. Satisfied with this decis ion I left. RAMBLER. A short time ago, a whale was strand ed on the Norfolk coast, and purchased as a speculation by a sharp practitioner, who advertised for information how to preserve it. A Sunderland wag replied to the advertisement, tendering the desir ed information on the receipt of half-a crown’s worth of postage stamps—which arrived ; and the following receipts was duly forwarded: “l’ut the whale care fully into a glass bottle ; cover it over with spirits of wine (strong whiskey may do;) then erok and seal up.” The postage stamps were handed over to a charitable instituton. “The Tail End.” An amusing circumstance occurred in the Justice Court at Boston, Justice Cush ing ou the Bench. A plaintiff appeared to recover a griudstoue, aud being called to the witness stand, deposed as follows: “I called on the defendant for tho stone, but he refused me, telling me that bel'oro I could get it I must try the tail end of the law, and I at once brought the matter before your Honor.” The Court looked stern and threatening, spectators snicker ed, embryo lawyers laughed behind deli cate handkerchiefs, grim officers smiled, and the witness sat down astonished. A Model County. The grand jury of Spencer county, Ky., after laborious investigation for two days the past week, was unable to discover a single offence against the peace and digni ty of the Commonwealth. They did not return an iudictmeut. The jail is empty. A telegraphic dispatch to the Rich mond papers says that Henry J. Adams, the Free State candidate for Mayor at Leavenworth. Kansas, lias been elected by one hundred and eighty majority over all. No further particulars are given. Mr. Powell, who painted the DeSoto Picture for Congress, has been appointed by the Ohio Legislature to paint a repre sentation of Perry’s Victory on Lake Erie —the price not to exceed $5,000. It will be placed in one of the panels of tho ro tunda of the new State House. The New York Times of the 20th inst., gives publicity to the rumor that in order to restore harmony among the Democratic party in that city, Mr. Schell, the new collector of customs, will resign to accept a foreign mission, and that John Dillon, Esq., a man of great wealth, will be his successor.
