da_i r,Y stttst. Tuesday Morning, April 38, 185 T. Prof. DeGratli. This gentleman, better known in our city as the Alan with the Sugar Loaf Hat, who was pronounced by many, on hie first appearance, to be a humbug, is fast mak ing an impression on our community, by bis many reliefs to the afflicted. On Sat urday, an old gentleman named Wm. C, Osborne, well known in our city, who, from rheumatic afflictions, has not been able to walk or use his hands sufficient to feed himself, for rnoro than ten years, was brought to Prof. DeGrath on the Street, where, in the preseuce of a large assem blage of people, he applied DeGruth’s Mectric Oil to one arm and shoulder, lie was immediately enabled to raise his hand to his head aud scratch it, a thing he said he had not done before in twelve years.— tio well satisfied was Mr. Osborne with the virtues of Degrath’s Electric Oil, ho purchased several bottles from the Drug gist and started for homo to give it u fair trial by an application to all the parts af fected, confident that iu a short time he would be himself again. On Saturday night at Temperance Hall, among the numerous cases of the afflicted who came forward for relief, was a Mr. Smith, who was so deaf that he could uot hear the thump of a cane ou the flour.— 15y the application of the Electric Oil lie was sufficiently relieved iu five minutes to be able to converse in an ordinary tone, at a distance of fifteen feet. Numerous other oases could be men tioned did our space permit. We advise the afflicted to call at Brooks & Chapman’s and get DeGrath’s Electric Oil and be re lieved. Indian Massacre in Minnesota. A dispatch from Chicago, dated April 28, says the runners returned to Eairbault from the pursuit of the Indians, confirm the rumored massacre in Blue Earth county. Forty settlers were murdered at Big Bend and several women carried off. Great alarm was everywhere felt. All the Indians beyond the Minnesota River have assumed a hostile attitude. Rumors are rife that there is au alliance of Sioux and Chippewas. Bank of the Empire State. Tho spirit of progressiveuess, which is at present actuating our city, is not so well known abroad and, 1 may say, at home, as it should be. I chanced to drop into Messrs. Albertson, Flynn & Co’s manu facturing establishment a few days since, and was really gratified and delighted to find such an establishment in full blast right in our midst, converting our native pine into the most beautiful and costly styles of house furniture. From a hasty examination of their work I was satisfied it was far superior to the generality of “slop” work brought out from the “ever lasting Yankee nation.” And I could not but feel that here was au admirable op portunity for all rampant “fire-eaters” and extreme Southern men to “prove their faith by their works.” Their prices I found to be very low, so low that 1 wondered how they could get their arti cles up so cheap, and at the same time have them so thoroughly made. This is a noble enterprise, and well deserves the warm patronage of every citizen who has the welfare and interest of our city and the State at heart. From the arrange ments of this company it looks os if they were determined to put things through in the right sort of style. Success to their efforts . Rambler. The Methodist Conference on Slavery. The Methodist Conference of Eastern New York, last, week, adopted the major ity report ol’ the Committee ou Slavery, which is as follows : Resolved, First, That we regard slave ry as a great natiouol and social evil, a violation of the natural rightsof man, and opposed to the spirit and progress of the Christian religion. Resolved, Secondly, That we will use what influence we possess to prevent its extension into regions arid communities in which it docs not at present exist, and will use all means that may with propriety be used by Christian ministers to effect its extirpation from the world. Interesting Chinese Items. The Chinese Government have raised tho premium for European heads “accord ing to grade,” in the following rates: For an officer’s head SI,OOO For a seaman’s head, 500 A premium of §50,000 is oflered for the capture of a British frigate. In the bid for European heads, no dif ference is made on account of nationality. The heads are employed to ornament the walls of the strongholds ns trophies. Tho sloop-of-war Portsmouth had sailed for Shanghai, the Levant was at Canton, and the Sail Jaciuto wns cruising about the islands looking for pirates. There were about thirty American vessels under charter for Australia when the Alexander left. Ship Challenge, with 800 coolies, Young America, 800 coolies, Queen of the Seas, Sportsman, and others not recollect ed, were also full. The Gazette publishes a report, on Chi nese authority, that after the burnings at Whampoa, the “Braves” turned up the graves on Danes Island of tho Amcricau seaman killed at the barrier; decapitated Ihe putrified trunks, took the blank visa ges to Canton, and there received the cus tomary rewards. Together with the head of the Spanish Consul, and others of the Thistle victims, they may now b 9 seen bleaching on the city walls. It appears that after H. M. S. Sybille left Whampoa, no time was lost by the “braves” in celebrating the event by a grand eouflagratiou of everything foreign owned. The destruction included the dock yard buildings of Hunt & Cos., nu American firm, aud a very large amount of American (though nominally English) property. DISCOVERED AT LAST!
