One who knows, says, place a common cow or ox horn in the track whero the mole is in the habit of making his journey, so. that he will enter into the “big end” of the horn endeavoring to make his way through, never attempting to turn back “in a horn.” The next session of the Georgia Baptist State Convention is to be held at Ameri cas, and is to convene on Friday before the fourth Sunday in April, 1858. For the Pithy Sun. Messrs. Editors: I notice in your Mon ! day's paper that Fireman No. 2 wishes to have a trial of the “mersheens.” If he will put the trial off until we get our new Engine lie then shall be gratified. In the meantime the ladies (bless their pretty faces) can be getting up the banner, anti show by their production how much they appreciate our service. Fireman No. 4. For the Daily Sun. Tilings About Town—No. XXII. I have seen the great Painting of the age—the Panorama of Dr. Kane’s Expe dition to the Arctic Regions. It is truly a magnificent work of art. But 1 did not enjoy it, and there are many others who were present, who are ready to say the same thing. The boys—half grown up youngsters, yearling chaps, then gosling aged shavers, who attend all places of amusement and instruction, not excepting churches, each provided with a huge stick and whistle, w§re there in full corps, and of course kepi up their usual amount of ‘•noise and confusion.” They invariably monopolise the front seats, fill up the windows and crowd the aisles so that those behind them cannot see, nor can they hear, in consequence of their noise. Then again, one of those boys chews more to bacco, squirts more juice on the floor, and swears more big oaths than two grown up men. Verily, the boys of our cities are fast becoming a nuisance that will, sooner or later, have to be abated, if not by per suasion, by force. I think it would be advisable to employ a large police force, to be in attendance at every public gath ering, to keep those rowdy, vagabond boys peaceable. Thoy are not all factory boys, by considerable odds. Asa general thing, the boys from the mills of our city conduct themselves much better than those boys who are taught to look upon them as inferiors. Rambler. Look Out for Him. For some days past a suspicious indi vidual has been prowling around our vil lage, calling himself Yeaman. He repre sents himself from Texas—says be is a tanner by trade, and talked extensively of what he was worth, kc. He employed a couple of young men, and a shoemaker, to go to Texas with him, and having no small hills of money, obtained a loan of them of sundry’ quarters and halves. He also examined and partially bargained for hides at various stores. Charley Lyle, of the Coweta House, who seems to have uu instinct for discovering poor men, began to suspect him, and thereupon presented his bill for board. After making all sorts of excuses, trotting Carley all over town, and dodging him occasionally, be acknowl edged his inability to come “to time.”— Charley took iiis coat ami bade him de part. Some of our citizens suspected him of an attempt on Suuday evening to steal a servant girl; no proof was obtained agaiust him, but he has departed, in company with the shoemaker, who is sup posed to be no better than he is. Yeaman is near six feet high, pale complexion, hooked nose, aud had on hero a sandy wig. He will bear watching —Newman (Ga.) Blade. The Atlantic and the Mississippi. We noticed on yesterday morning, an open car carrying the old l’huenix Fire Engine from Charlcstou to Memphis, for a First of May demonstration. On tlie same car were two large casks, contain ing about four hundred and fifty gallons of water from the Atlantic Ocean, which is to be mingled with the waters of the Mississippi. The completion of the Mem phis & Charleston Railroad, is a great achievement in Commerce, and will be celebrated with ail due and appropriate ceremonies. A few members of the com pany, only, acting as a Committee, atten ded the Phoenix Engine, but we under stand that the balance will pass up on Tuesday morning. We wish them a plea sant trip.— Atlanta American. We Feed John Bull. A parliamentary paper has just been issued, showing the total imports of grain and flour into England for the past year. Three-fourths of the supply of foreign flour were obtained from the United States in addition to three-fifths of the amount of Indian corn, and more than a fourth of the amount of wheat.
