We called iu yesterday at Vandeuberg’s
Emporium of Pianos, Music and Musical
Instruments, aud were much pleased to
f ee such a large, varied aud tine stock.—

—among them some of the finest and
ettiest we ever saw—sweet toued—such
a < would cliarm the greatest hater of the
gentler sex. We invite our lady readers,

Picnic and Target Firing.
The military companies of the city, aud
I such citizens as had the good luck of an
I invite, enjoyed the festivities of a picnic
[at Camp .Montgomery, near this city, yes-
I terday. Target tiring came off during the
[day by the honorary members of the Co
lumbus Guards, and the prizes—one sil
ver salver, pitcher, aud two goblets—were
won by Thomas Chaffin, Jr.

j The steamboat Wave, from this place,
arrived at Apalachicola ou the 24th, with
<lB4 bales of cotton.
A letter from Apalachicola, dated the
25th, states that John Kinsley, Mate of
the Wave, fell from the boiler deck aud
broke his thigh aud was otherwise injur
ed. He was better on tbe 2oth, but his
condition was still considered critical.

Things About Town—No. XXIII.
I Our city is very much iu need of a prop
erly constructed building for public exhi
bitions, such as addresses, lcclures, the
atrical performances, concei ts, &c. We
have the Temperance Hall, a very large
and spacious one it is, but very miserably
constructed for auy kind of public exer
cise of the human voice. A calf might
idu well enough on its stage, and could be
very distinctly heard, or, perhaps, the
swelling notes of our “ Mexican mocking
birds” might fall sweetly and iu silvery
tones upon the ear, but for the voice of
poor huinau nature it is too much. Can
not some improvements be made so as to
assist all who “speak in public on the
stage?” But aside from this, the seats
are so constructed that a person from the
jback seats gets only a view of the head
| and shoulders of the performers; the foot
lights he never sees, without standing up
and sometimes getting on the seat. Oh,
that some of our capitalists could be pos
sessed of public spirit enough to erect an
Atheneum, with ail the modern improve
ments of adaptation for public speaking
and singing. The speaker or singer who
comes out of Temperance Hall with sound
lungs has a set equal to a blacksmith’s
bellows. Rambler.
[ Columbus and Her Railroad Interests.
The citizens of Columbus, esteemed
I wise and energetic in general, have al
ways been slow to perceive their true in
terests with respect to railroad conne
tions. Confident in the natural advantages
of their position, they refused all railroad
facilities until cotton was taken out of
their warehouses and wagoned to the vil
lage of Oglethorpe. They then opened
their eyes to their real situation, and built
i the Muscogee Railroad. This restored
\ Columbus to her accustomed prosperity,
which the Mobile and Girard Railroad
ha: kept np to high water mark, and
promises to advance beyond anything we
have ever before enjoyed. In the mean
time, a connection by railroad with Eu
faula was offered to us, and unwisely neg
lected until the citizens of that growing
and prosperous town had formed engage
ments with the South-Western Railroad
Company, which are now to be consum
mated by the construction of a branch
road from Cuthbert, in Randolph county.
It may be a matter of wonder to our
citizens, that the Central, and South-
Western Railroad Companies will persist
in the extension of their lines of road by
way of Eufaula, when all the benefits of
the extension could be secured by build
ing a road from Fort Mitchell, upon the
Mobile and Girard Railroad, to Eufaula
—a distance of about 32 miles—and over
a nearly level plain, at very small cost. —
This mystery may be explained, and very
easily understood.
Savannah, the Central, and South-
Western Railroads, arc competing for the
trade of the great South-West. Rut
though Savannah is one hundred miles
nearer Montgomery, Ala., than Charles
ton is, she finds it impossible to compete
with her commercial rival, because of the
delay and expense of portage at Columbus.
A gentleman connected with our Rail
roads, and well posted in their statistics,
informs us that nine tenths of the through
travel which passes over the Montgomery
and West l’oint Railroad goes by way of
Atlanta instead of Columbus; and that it
is impossible to compete with the upper
line in the transportation of all heavy
freights. There are now, we are inform
ed, three thousand tons of iron belonging
to the Alabama and Florida Railroad,
lying at the port of Savannah, which can
not be transported over the lower line of
railroad, because there is a charge of 50
cents per ton, on the iron, for drayage, at
Columbus. It will now be understood
why Savannah, the Central, und South-
Western Railroad Companies are pushing
thp latter road across the Chattahoocheo
River, at Eufaula. They are determined
to have a continuous line of railroad from
the seaboard to the waters of the Alabama
River, without portage.
And this same portage at Columbus is
and was the chief argument used by the
citizens of Eufaula against the Columbus
connection. Remove it, aud we have
strong reasons to believe that the Eufuula
Brunch Road will be abandoned, that the
money subscribed to it will be diverted
to the construction of a Branch Road
from Fort Mitchell to Eufaula ; and that
important nil can be obtained from these
great seaboard corporations towards the
further extension of the Mobile .and Girard
Railroad.
In futuro articles we will discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of an easy
connection at this point, of all the Roads
centering here, and the way to do it; and
why Eufaula should consent to the diver
sion of her capital from the South-West
ern branch to the Mobile and Girard

very lirm position occupied by holders, aud the
sales wore consequently limited to some 526 bales,

LOUISVILLE, April 25.—The only transaction
in pork was 40 bbls. mess at $22. In bacon, sales
of 66 casks clear sides at 12%c., 17 casks at 12%,
pkgs extra, and $1.25 for packages, 17 casks shoul
ders at 9c. packed, aud 10 tierces Falls City hams
at 12 cents. Very little bacon arriving—stock
10,000 lbs—sold from wagons at 8%, 10% and 11%.
