daily su:n. Tuesday Morning, May 1!), 1857. May. One of Willis’s little aimine-pitniuis be gins with — “The Spring is here, the delicate footed May, With her slight fingers full of buds and flowers,” which, and other little prettinesses in the game strain, are “calculated” for a North ern meridian about this time of year. Owing to the comet, or some other frigid influence, our Spring has been much re tarded, and only now are bee und bird and bud and blossom beginning to make the air vocal and redolent of perfume. The last few days have been glorious, super excellent, magnificent. On Suuday we knew not which most to admire—the “balm-breathing gale”—the many-hued flowers —the emerald grass—or the Valen ciennes, Maltese, Honiton, guipure, mus lin, and gay, glittering, gorgeous stream ers, that were floating around in wild profusion, making lovely woman still more beautiful, and giving to the less favored few an added grace ; all of which “ happy coincidences” had a magic effect upon this journalist, who felt lighter than gossamer —finer than split silk—as if he had “fed on flutes” for a fortnight. Physiologically, we are not inclined to rapturous emotions, but such a concatenation of delights as Sunday afforded, would make a stoic grin. “The Spring time of year is coming, coming, Flowers are blooming, fresh and gay, Insects bright are humming, humming, And ail the world is May.” “Music at Nightfall.” Music is delightful, at any time, in any place—music on the water—music by moonlight—music on the banjo—music on the fiddle—in brief, any where or on any thiDg, except on the hurdy-gurdy, with monkey attachment, bag-pipes or Jews barp—none of which latter can be proper ly defined as “dulcet melodies.” But, to use the language of a delightfully poetic and classic contemporary, “To be myste riously awakened from a midnight doze, by the tones of music stealing in at the window, and pervading the half slumber ing senses with a soft, joyous, soothing influence—half dreamlike, half real—the heart fairly imbued with the spirit of melody,” “If there’s bliss upon earth, It is this—it is this.” Yes, that’s it, exactly, or something very much like it; and just so we were “awakened” by the “soft bugle” and kin dred instruments of the “Mechanics’ Brass Baud” one “stilly night” last week, when “Katy Darling,” “La Marseillaise,” and other pieces whose charm was both in as sociation and manner of execution, “thrill ed in the silence of evening,” and consign ed us, with their last echoes, to the rosy slumber, for which the band aforesaid will forever hold us their grateful debt ors, albeit we are aware that they were only practising, and that the serenade was not intended for our individual gratifica tion. Success to the Brass Band. May their lungs never be weaker. FOR SALE OR HIRE. A LIKELY NEGRO GIRL, 11 or 12 years old. For terms, apply to the subscriber, No. 155 Broad street, Columbus, Georgia.
