D-A-l ITT SUN. Wednesday Morning, June 3, 1857. Fine Strawberries. There are now on exhibition at Mr. I. G. Strupper’s establishment, on Ran dolph street, a couple of baskets of strawberries, from the beds of Mr. Chas. A. Peabody, of Russell county, Ala., which for size and general lusciousness of appearance are ahead of anything we have seen in the way of strawberries. We did not take the dimensions of any of them, but should suppose from their ap pearance that the largest would measure from three and a half to four inches in circumference. We are assured that they are as superior in Havor to the common varieties as they are in appearance and size. Mr. Peabody informs us that he sends them to New York, Boston and Mobile with safety. One variety is the Hovey Seedling, and the other Peabody, Hautboy Seedling, a cross between the Hovey Seedling and the Alabama Wild ing, the production of Mr. Peabody's genius and enterprise, and it is said, is the best variety of strawberries now out. The berries will be on exhibition at Mr. Strupper’s until this evening 3 o’clock, where the public are respectfully invited to call and examine them. Macon Volunteers. This veteran volunteer company passed through our city on Monday night last, en route for Montgomery, on a visit to the Montgomery Blues, by special invitation of that gallant company. Notwithstand ing it was raining almost a deluge at the time the cars from Macon arrived, our volunteer companies, with their wonted disregard for difficulties, turned out in respectable numbers to greet them, and show them the proper civilities on such occasions. We understand that the Vol unteers have received and accepted an invitation from one or all of our volunteer companies, to give our city a call on their return to Macon, and partake of the fes tivities of a Pic Nic at Camp Montgomery —of this, however, we are not certain, as we could procure no definite information upon the subject, notwithstanding we sought it diligently, if not with tears.— We will chronicle the fact in due time, for our citizens to be on the look out for the pageant, if any arrangement of the kind should be effected. “Policeman, Spare that Dog!” We understand that the police were vigilant in the discharge of their duty last night, in killing the vagrant dogs found at large in the streets, and that several dogs were made to ‘‘bite the dust.” Public policy demands that some police regulation should be made to rid our city of the surplus dogs within its limits, but it really strikes us that a bet ter plan than indiscriminate slaughter might be adopted ; for it is not unfre quently the case, that despite the great est precaution on the part of the owner, a favorite dog will pass the bounds allot ed for dogs, and find their way into the streets, when, if a policeman comes along, he is bound to shoot him in obedience to orders, notwithstanding he knows the dog is valued by the owner almost above price. Now, our suggestion would be, that there should be a public pound, where all dogs, caught out of their own er’s enclosures after night, should be con fined until next day at a certain hour, when, if no owner appeared to claim them, the common curs and flees should be killed, and the better breeds saved and sold to the highest bidder to pay their expenses—the owner, in every instance claiming his dog, to pay a certain price, say one dollar, for the trouble of taking care of him. We think this plan would operate infinitely better than the one now in vogue, of making nodiscrimination be tween the “tinkler gypseys messin,” and those “Whelpit far abroad, Where sailors guug to lish for Cod.’’ We understand that among the slain last night, was a splendid pointer, that the owner could not have been induced to part with.
