DAI f:-;Y BU’N. Friday Morning, June lit) 1857. An Acceptable Present. Seated in our sanctum on yesterday, on an old, uncomfortable split-bottom cbair, minus half its seat, and conning over iiu interminable butch of dull, dry and unin teresting exchanges, aud ever and anon thrustiug our digits through the filaments which adorn our caput, (which, by the way, are becoming somewhat thin by rea son of like manipulations for like pur poses,) iu the hope of scareing up the ghost of a defunct idea, or rustling up a new oue, when our friend, aud the friend of mankind generally, L. €. iiubbell, the geullemanly agent of the Troy Factory, entered our office, bearing upon his arm a strange looking article, to which he invi ted our especial attention. Upon inves tigation we found it to be the most ingeni ous construction of a camp chair we had ever seen, combining durability, comfort, aud convenience of transportation, which will make it invaluable for camp pur poses, aud is just the very thing for per sons who attend camp-meetings, and who do not wish to expose their tine furniture to the rubbing and scratching incident to moving to aud fro, aud the abuse neces sarily involved in its exposure at such places. Did you evesee a duck pounce down upon an unwary Juue-bug, or a bashful girl dump down upon a crazy stool at the entrance of a stranger? if yea, then you can have a faint idea with what alacrity we seated ourself in the chair aforesaid, when informed it was for our own special benefit and behoof, to have aud to sit in forever, if we lived that long, and did not get tired of sitting. The only objectionable feature in it is, that it is so comfortable we are somewhat afraiu that it will detract from our known ami appreciated habits of industry. Friend Hutibell has our thanks for the accepta ble present. Solicitor’s Fees. Having been asked by several iu the street, yesterday, what are the fees of the Solicitor General, in certain criminal convictions, we have examined and find him entitled, in convictions for gaming, to S4O; for furnishieg slaves with liquoi $25 ; for retailing without license S2O. and for all other offences $5. The in qui*-y grew out of a case in the City Court, of conviction for furnishing a slave with liquor, in which the Solicitor of that Court received the fee of $25, when the enquirer thought him only entitled to $5 The way to steer clear of such actions is not to violate the Statute. The case in point was founded on the sale to a negro of one bottle of whiskey, worth, proba bly, 25 cents. The party plead guilty, and got otf with a fine of $ 15, which, will, cost; run up to $45. The way of the transgressor is hard. Muscogee Superior Court. Muscogee Superior Court will adjourn to-day, having disposed of most of the business which was before it. The Grant, Jury made their General Presentments yesterday evening, and were d.schargeo for the remainder of the Term. They re commend to the next Legislature an in crease of the salaries of the Circuit Judg es in Georgia, to three thousand dollars per annum, and very properly urge as a reason For the increase that the present salary of eighteen hundred dollars is in sufficient compensation for the talent ne cessary to discharge the duties of the office. We hope the matter will be acted on by our next Legislature, and the sala ry be fixed at an amount compatible witli the dignity of the office, and the duties it involves. We understand that the Jury on the case of the State against John Kavanaugh charged with an assault with intent to murder, had not brought, in their verdict wheat Court adjourned yesterday evening. Thejt had been out about twenty-foui hours, and will probably make a mistrial •at last. Atlantic Telegraph Cable. The London correspondent of the New If ark Herald says 1700 miles of the cable were completed on the 15th u!t., 800 ai ‘Gravesend and 700 at Birkenhead Tin ‘•remaining portions at both these places, 425 at the former, and 320 miles at tin latter place, will be completed and put •on board the Niagara and Agamemnon •by the middle of July. The writer adds that the cable has been satisfactorily tested at both fact tries. Tin point of rendezvous for the American and English steamers, before starling from mid ocean, will be either Cork in Ireland or Milford in Wales. RUN AWAY, FROM the State of Alabama, a CUR t*.
