SUN. Wednesday Morning. June 17,1857• Rejoicing in Camp. Our editorial brethren, generally, are as jubilant over the escape of tbe earlb from tbe auticip&ted Collision with tbe Comet, as if they bad found u dollar with a hole in it, or soui“ unwary subscriber had been soft enough to pay bis subscrip tion to tbe,r papers. Look out, gentle men, tbe Comet bits only gone in search of its tail, and when it finds it it may give *you a swipe yet. That Geitnan ustrono mar may have made a slight miscalcula tion as to tbe time. Serious Accident. We learn from the Newnan Blade, that on Saturday last a child of Mr. A. A correspondent of the Charleston Stan dard, writing from Suintervilie, S uih Carolina, on the 9th June, after notic ug the unfavorable appearance of the crops, says: ‘•My own opinion is, that, as a general thing,'there cannot possibly be more than a half crop this year of every thing, and as we all made short crops last year, wbai are we to do for the support of man and beast ? ••1 was told this morning by a respect able gentleman, that a certain class of the people —1 allude to the poor—are actu ally in a state of starvation, and I know that in many places they must suffer, un less ai .ed from some source. I think our State Executive ought to call a Convention for the purpose of devising some plan by which tbe poor of tbe State might be fed for one or two months at least. The State is able to help them, and 1 think it ought to do so; if not, the burden will fall on a few private individuals. I think that the State could spare at least one hundred thousand dollars, and not miss it. If the State won’t act in the matter, the people must. I hope some kind feel ing man will, through the papers, instruct us bow to act in the matter. •‘Corn is selling in our village at one dollar and fifty cents per bushel, for cash, and scarce at that. 1 know thousands ol people who can’t provide one dollar to buy provisions with.” “COLUMBUS Building and Loan Association.
