Thursday Morning, July #, 1897.
Tall Oats,
We were shown on yesterday, by our
feljow-townsman, Colonel tt. L. Mott, a
couple of small bundles of oats which he
intormed us grew on his pine laud about
ten miles from this city on the Opelika
Road, in Russell county, Ala., which
were decidedly tall oats. We did not
measure them, but should suppose from
the mere sight that they were over live
feet high, and he informed us that they
wereliot cut closer the ground than oats
usually arc. The land upon which the
sample grew was not manured, and it
was a fair average of his crop. He also
had with him a small bundle that was
raised on a river bottom plantation that
was still taller, being all of six feet high.
The oat crop generally is better than
ever known, and as it is an important
adjunct to the corn crop in feeding stock,
we hope that it will be the means of re
ducing corn down to a living price.
Some Beets.
Messrs. Wm. Mahaffey and M, Bar
scliall, each laid upon our table yester
day morning, a beet of their own raising,
which were pretty fair samples of beets
for this locality, though they would be
exceedingly small by the side of the New
Orleans beet, a notice of which we pub
lished yesterday. The one raised by Mr.
Mahaffey measured twenty inches in cir
cumference, and weighed 4 lbs., and the
one raised by Mr. Barschall measured
19$ inches in circumference and weighed
lbs. They were both of the blood tur
nip species. We doubt if they can be
beat for size in this city or vicinity.
The Administration on Kansas.
The usually well informed correspon
dent, “Ion,” of the Baltimore Sun, in a
letter from Washington on the 26tli of
June, writes:
“The Inaugural addrees of Gov. Walk
er gave as much dissatisfaction at the
North as at the South. But his Topeka
address has been somewhat better re
ceived by the more reasonable portion
of the northern republican journals.—
Both of the addresses show distinctly
that Gov. Walker’s course is in conformi
ty with his instructions and meets with
the approval of the Executive. The Un
ion of this morning has a leader on the
subject, which sets forth the views of the
administration, and goes to support the
position taken by Gov. Walker.”
The writer continues:
“The Georg a State Convention yester
day adopted strong resolutions denoucing
Gov. Walker’s course, which necessarily
involves the censure of the administra
tion. The people of Kansas are under
no obligation to adopt the advice of
Walker, and it is now said they probably
will not. The course of things, then,
will be this. The Convention will submit
the instrument to Congress, and that body
will approve of it. subject to the approba
tion of the inhabitants of the Territory , the
popular will to be ascertained by some
mode which Congress will itself pre
scribe.”
A correspondent of the New Orleans
Picayune, writing from Baltimore, June
17th, says:
“I had the pleasure to-day, for the
first time, of seeing and conversing with
Wm. Morton, the steadfast and faithful
friend of Dr. Kane, who accompanied him
in his long, dreary night of Arctic explo
rations. I could not but look upon this
honest, true-hearted son of Erin with a
degree of pride and satisfaction. He
cluug to the great explorer with more
than a brother’s affection—was with him
amid the crashing ice of the Arctic seas,
through its long, desolate, gloomy night
—suffered there toil hardship and fatigue
—then followed him as a companion and
attendant to the sunny South; closed his
eyes in death, and accompanied the life
less remains—far as man could go—to
the portals of the grave: dropped a si
lent tear to his memory, and bade fare
well to all but hallowed memories, which
still live with Morton, fresh as the ever
green laurel. There are few Mortons in
the world.
“It did me good, also, to look upon
‘Etah.’the Lapland dog, brought home
by the immortal explorer, which accom
panieg Morton. This animal is white,
has the features of a wolf, though docile
and pleasant. I asked Morton what val
ue he put upon him. He said: ‘You
might saw off my leg and take it, before
I would part with this dog. He has seen
me through many a weary journey, and
if I live, I shall see him cared for in life
and respected in death.’ ”
Robert J. Wallter’* RicHea.
The New York Mirror, whose editor
has known Governor Walker “intimate
ly and thoroughly for ten years,” says
of him:
After handling some hundreds of mil
lions of the public money, he left the
office as poor as a primitive Christian.
Since then he may have bought stocks
and lands and mines that have made him
rich. But when was it counted a crime
for fortune to reward the sagacity even
of a speculator? In 1848, Mr. Walker
invested $1,750 in the purchase of land
on what is now the city of Fond du Lac,
for which he has been offered, within a
few months, more than $200,000; and
he -also bought, years ago, coal and
quicksilver mines, which are making him
a millionaire.

Columbus, Juue 3d, 1857.
Dr. G. W. CROAFT:
Dear Sir—l take ideasure in informing you ot
the unprecedented success of your Oil. In not a
single instance has it failed t effect (if not a per
fect cure) the most salutary good, and 1 shall be
compelled to call ou you for more. One of our
best druggists was induced, from my statement id
its effectual cure of sore nipples, to use it on his
lady, who was suffering from a risirg ou her
breast, and he says lie would not take one hundred
dollars for the immediate and entire n lie! it gave
her, and he is willing to give his certificate at any
time. Very Respectfully,
A. K. AYER.
Columbus, Ga., Juue 22, 1857.
This certificate is to show’ that 1 have used the
Eureka Oil iu several instances among negroes,
viz. for Paius. Rheumatism, Scrofulous Affections,
Tooth and Ileuu Ache. It is one of the greatest
medicines now in use. It acts like a charm.

Mr. G. W. CROAFT:
Dear Sir—l take pleasure in stating to you, tliai
although I at first had but lit le confidence in the
efficacy of the Oil or Mixture you gave me, 1 use.,
it iu two cases in my family —oneof swollen legsol
a servant girl, of long standing, which were redu
cod to nearly their natural size in a few hours;
and the other a cracked or very sore nipple, which
was cured with a few’ applications, after Dr. be-
Grath’s Electric Oil, and many other remedies,
had failed. Yery Respectfully,
A. R. AYER.
