and bun. Wednesday Morning, Aug. 1857. The Sledge House. We would invite the attention of the travelling public to the advertisement of this House, in our columns to-day, The * House has been recently built with au eye to the comfort of those who may patron iie it, and we learn that the proprietor supplies his table with every delicacy the country and accessable markets afford.— Give him a call. The Enquirer of yesterday morning contains the call for a meeting of the American party of the upper town dis trict to-day, at 10 o’clock, at Temperance Hall, and of the lower town district at the Court House to-morrow, at ten o’clock, for the purpose of appointing delegates from the respective districts to the Convention whioh is to nominate candidates for the Legislature. Flour has a downward tendency here as elsewhere, as will be seen by refer ence to the advertisement of the Palace Mills in our paper to-day. The large quantity of wheat that has been made, and fine prospects for an overwhelming corn crop, will certainly bring bread stuffs down to a living price after awhile. So mote it be. Mobile and Girard Rail Road. Office Mobile & Girard 11. R. Cos., 1 Girard, Ala., Aug. 25, 1857. / Editor Daily Sun: Dear Sir —l have noticed an article in your paper of this morning, copied from the Union Springs Express, in which it is asserted that the Board # of Directors of this Company are ottering for sale all its Bonds at 20 per cent discount. From whence this fact be derived I am at a loss to conjecture. Having been the Secretary of the Board for many years, and necessarily in its confidence, and thus familiar with its proceedings as well as keeping a record of them—the article in the Express dis closes a stricter intimacy with the pro ceedings of the Board than can be derived from any source within the scope of my official position. No Bonds have been issued, nor has any been ordered to be issued. Possibly the matter may have originated from canvassing the probabili ties of an eventual issue, and the prices they might then be put upon the market at. Very respectfully, yours, &c., WALTON B. HARRIS, Secretary, &c. When fortune smiles she often designs the most mischief. If the fickle dame will smile one of her loud sm les upon us, we will run the risk of the mischief afterwards. We are per fectly willing for any person to enjoy her frowns that has a fancy for them, but as for us we would rather for her to smile on us—yea, suicker right out —than she should look the least sour at us. Appointment. Mr. William G. Woodfin, formerly of Richmond, has been elected to the San ders Professorship in Mercer University. This chair is devoted to Roman Literature and Modern Languages. Mr. Guthrie, of Chicago, has one field of 850 acres of bay, enclosed with good pine board and cedar post fence. He is cutting from other fields at least 1000 acres besides, and expects to cut and press 5000 tons of hay. At last accounts from Germany, great consternation prevailed along the Moselle on account of serious conflagrations which had destroyed small towns, villages and forests. They were believed to be the work of incendiaries. The tobaoco crop in some parts of Ma ryland and Virginia is said to be very poor, on account of the wetness of the season. This has caused the stalks to grow rank, without a proportionate growth of leaves. DIED, At Gordon Springs, on the 20tlx August, Virgin ginia Abercrombie, youngest daughter of John M. A Mary A. AFFLICTED, READ!—I called to see a lady from Alabama, who had come to Atlanta on a visit. W hen I entered the room, 1 fouud her sitting in a chair with the glands of her neck so much swollen and iufianied that she could not turn her head to the right or left, to speak so as to be heard across the room. I prevailed with her to try Eureka Oil. She consented, anil commenced by rubbing it well ou the throat, and gargling frequently, aud to my great astonishment, in three days she pronouuced herself effectually cured, and left for Alabama with a good supply oi the justly celebrated Eureka Oil. Sold only, in Atlanta, by S. J. SHACKLEFORD. Sole Agent. TRY IT, EVERYBODY I—A lady iu this city who was awfully afflicted with inflammatory rheu matism from the bottom of the left foot up the Miue limb and side, both shoulders, and down the arm to the en *s of her fingers; could not walk, but lay in bed tormented with the most excrucia ting pain, day aud night. I recommended her to try the Eureka Oil. She readily agreed to do so. and commenced rubbing it on the surface three or iour times a day, and in about live days he was entirely relieved of inflammation and paiu. 1 was au eye witness of the wonderful effects of this Oil, and affirm the above to be substantially true. S. J. SH ACKLEFORD, Agent. CHISHOLM iSi ADAIR'S OFFICE, Atlanta, August 17,1857. Dr. G. \V.
