daily sxjn;. T geidiy Morning, Sept. 8, 1857. i ; .. * —t -- r Hon. Robert Toombs will accept our i hanks for continued favors in forward ing to us interesting and valuable public jocuments. t Persons in want of a good dwelling house or valuable servants should refer to the advertisement of Col. F. G. Wil kins, in another column. It is not often such property is to be had even for the money. We would invite the reader’s attention to the Card of D. P. Ellis, in our columns to-day. His business qualifications are , 00 well known in this community to need rommendation from us. City Light Guards. This spirited Company; Capt. Colquit, ! was out yesterday evening, in full feath er, for parade and drill, and presented their usual fine appearance. Concert. As will be seen by reference to our ad vertising columns, the Blind Sisters will give a Concert of vocal music to-night at Concert Hall. We learn that they sing very sweetly, and thoie fond of music, and possessed of charitable hearts, can subserve a double purpose by going to witness their performance. Money given to the unfortunate generally’ blesses the giver more than the receiver. On a further examination of the bolls on the very luxurious and beautiful cot ton plant brought to our office last Satur day, from the plantation of Mr. J. R. Jones, we find a number of bolls, conside rably over half grown, bored into by the boll worm, the hole being large enough to receive duck shot. The beginning made gives evidence of a determination on the part of the worm to get the bigger part of the fruit under that age. On taking some specimens into the street, we met a planter from Dougherty County, Ga., who informed us the ravages of the same worm was common, and becoming to be very disastrous in his County. We fear Mr. Jones’ harvest will fall far short of present outside appearances, if the stalk he sent us is an indication of the condi tion of his cotton crop. Victoria’s Hairdresser. Mr. Isodcre. the Queen’s coiffeur, who receives £2 UOO a year for dressing Her Majesty’s hair twice a day, had gone to London in the morning, meaning to return to Windsor in time for toilette, but on arriving at the station was just five min utes too late, and saw tho train depart without him. His horror was great, as he knew his want of punctuality would deprive him of his place, so he was obliged to take a special train, and the establish ment, feeling tho importance of his busi ness, put on extra steam and whisked him the eighteen miles in eighteen min utes for £lß.— Raikes’ Journal. The Last Version. Several reasons have been assigned as the cause of the recent visit of Napoleon and Eugenia to Queen Victoria, at Os borne, Isle of Wright. The last version of the cause of the visit is one which era enaies from the lofty, desolate drawing rooms of the old and aristocratic fau bourg, and tells of the rejection of Prince Napoleon by the Princess Mary of Cam bridge, some months ago, and of the sore damage done to the heart of the corpu leut wooer by this refusal—a damage which not even the best of cheer, the most talented of cooks, the most honest of wiue merchants, and the tender consolations of Emile Girardin’s wife, have been as yet capable of repairing—and report will have it that the present Imperial visit is dedi cated to love, and that the imperial cou ple are to aot as love’s messengers—noth ing more—and to endeavor to enlist the heart of Queen Victoria in favor of the poor, broken-spiyited suitor, whose state of depression has been beheld with com passion for some time past.— Petersburg Experts. Caloric Engines. Mr. Ericson does not despair of success in applying the “new motor.” He is said to have built eight small engines, on the hot air principle, since the experiment with the Ericson steamship, and to be still engaged in the pursuit of his favor ite study. The Scientific American says: “He has now floating on the Hudson a small steamer, or air-er, about seventy feet long, which he has succeeded in dri ving at a good rate by the combustion of an almost incredibly small quantity of pine kindling wood. There are two en gines, horizontal, single acting, and ap parently about thirty inches diameter by thirty-six inches stroke. The vessel is an open boat, or mammoth yawl, and the paddle wheels are about ten or twelve feet in diameter. We believe air alone is the fluid employed as a medium to generate the power.” Plate Glass. The New York Express notices anew process for polishing glass, employed by ‘ the United States Manufacturing and Pol ishing Plate Glass Company, of that city, which will greatly reduce the cost of plate glass mirrors. It is done by placiug the plates between two discs turned by steam. It takes hours to grind down the plate and one hour to polish it. The Express illustrates the saving of the process by statiug that the groat mirror in the St. I Nicholas bar cost SI2OO, or sl6 76 per square foot. A plate of similar diuieu iions, Nw York process, cun be made and polished for 40 cents per foot, and silvered for 30 cents —making the mirror cost the American manufacturer, out and °ot, $56 ! If this process proves good ] and satisfactory, everybody can have uiir- | tors in a short time. MAJdHIED, By Rev. A. M. Wynn, .hi Monday morning, at the rsrry llou, in Columbus. William K. When I arrived in this place Mr. V. D. Tharp, seeing the condition of my horse’s back, recommended to me the use of Eureka Oil. Croft A Co.—Dear Sirs—With pleasure I inform you that I have made three applications of your Eu eka Oil in my case, (inflammation of the neck of the bladder and urctliru). 1 believe a cure has been effected, though 1 have not complied strictly with your dilections. I). L. GORDON. AFFLICTED, READ!—I called to see a lady from Alabama, who had come to Atlanta on a visit. When I entered the room, I found her sitting in a chair with the glauds of her neck so much swollen and inflamed that she could not turn her head to the right or left, to speak so as to be heard across the room. I prevailed with her to try Eureka Oil. She consented, and commenced by rubbing it well on the throat, and gargling frequently, and to my great astonishment, iu three days she pronounced herself effectually cured, and left for Alabama with a good supply of the justly celebrated Eureka Oil. Sold only, in Atlanta, by S. J. SHACKLEFORD, Solo Agent. TRY IT, FVERYBODY! —A lady in this city who was awfully afflicted with inflammatory rheu matism from the bottom of the left foot up the same limb and side, both shoulders, and down the arm to the ends of her fingers; could not walk, but lay in bed tormented with the most excrucia ting pain, day and night. I recommended her to try the Eureka (Jil. She readily agreed to do so, and commenced rubbing it on the surface three or four times a day, and in about five days rhe was entirely relieved of inflammation and pain. I was an eye witness of the wonderful effects of this Oil, and affirm tho above to be substantially true. S.J. SHACKLEFORD, Agent. CHISHOLM & ADAIR’S OFFICE, Atlanta, August 17, 1867. Dr. G. W.
