DAILY sun. Wednesday Morning, Sept. 9, 1857. Thanks* The editor, bosses, printers, and devils, of the Sun office, return thanks to George Gullen, of the “Sunny South,” for a most delicious bowl of vegetable soup seut us yesterday at lunch time. It was fine and no mistake. Grand Concert. As will be seen by reference to our ad vertising columns, Mrs. E. L Dickerson, assisted by her four children, will give one of her Grand Concerts, at Temper ance Hall, on Thursday night. Mrs. D., as a pianist and guitarist, is said to have but few equals, while her children are perfect prodigies of musical genius. Her Concerts are said to be of the most agree able and entertaining character, and we hope she will be patronized liberally by our citizens. Desirable Property for Sale. We would call the attention of our readers to the advertisement of the desi rable property, offered for sale or rent by Messrs. Harrison & Pitts, to be found in our columns to-day. We doubt not it is the most desirable and best arranged dwelling and grounds in or about Colum bus, and any person wanting a fine, com modious and comfortable dwelling, could not be better suited iu all this region of country sp* Moss-Side. J. W. Pease has laid on our table the above work, written by a Virginia lady, of extraordinary endowments, who, un der the rather attractive nom de plume of Marion Harland, has written several of the most interesting novels of the day.— ‘■Alone,” and the “Hidden Path” have been more sought after by the intelligent and virtuous reader than any works of fiction that have appeared for years, and we dare say that no person ever rose from their perusal but felt, himself fully compensated for the time employed in reading them, and if the critics are to be believed, this work maintains fully her former enviable reputation. We have but glanced at a few pages of it, and can not attempt either a criticism of its plot or literary merits, but so far as we are able to judge from what we have read, we think we may hazard an endorsement of what the critics have represented it to be—a really entertaining book. The on ly objection we have to it is, it was print ed in New York. For sale by J. W. Pease. Muacegee Rail Road. The annual meeting of the stockhold ers in this road was held at the office of the company, in this city, on Monday, at which an election of officers for the en suing year took place, and resulted as follows: John L. Mustian, re-elected President and Superintendent. Dirjsctors Richard Patten, J. F. Bozeman, L. T. Downing, Randolph L. Mott, and S. M. Farrar, of Columbus; and Edward Padelford, of Savannah. The report of the President, noticed by us on a former occasion, was received, but owing to the small attendance of stockholders, no action was taken on the matters bo which their attention had been called in the report. Learning to Fight. The British journals express the opin ion that the Chinese are learning to fight. They must be dull scholars if they have not made some progress by this time.— Whenever these unfortunate pig tails cross the track of John Bull’s trade and com merce, he gives them a practical lesson in the art of war.
