For the Daily Sun.
Editors Sun :—lt is very hard for one
man to keep so great a city as ours “all
right side up with care.” When you get
one disjointed piece of the machinery in
proper place, and all seems to work well,
and you feel you have accomplished a
great deal towards the good order and
harmony of society, straightway another i
wheel flies out of its place, and you must i
go to work to mend up that break. These !
reflections are suggested by the present
practice of allowing so many negro Balls
of nights. Within the past three weeks
there have been three in our city. Good
Christian masters and mistresses may
think it no harm to allow their negroes
to spend the night in this way, but an
outsider does. I stood and watched at
one of them until 1 had seen some half
dozen couples arrive, and alight from
carriages, and for the life of me I could
not tell, in the dark, whether the persons
alighting were negroes or whites, unless
I had known before. You talk about
dressing—hoops, crinoline, furbelows
and flounces, silks, muslins; whew 1 your
cooks and chamber-maids beat you all
“holler.” I have heard many ladies
complain that their servants were very
saucy and impudent. Yes, and so they
will remain, until you make up your
minds to keep them at home of evenings,
and make them attend to their business.

Protracted Meeting.
A protracted or quarterly meeting is
in progress at the Methodist Episcopal
Church in this city, which is very likely
to result in the addition of a considera
ble number to the church. The minister
in charge, Rev. Mr. Dorman, is laboring
with his characteristic zeal and ability.
He is assisted by the Rev. P. P. Neely,
who proclaims the gospel truths with a
beauty and pathos rarely excelled. His
discourses are made up of the choicest
gems from the garden of literature, and
fall upon the ear as gently as “ the dew
upon Mount Hermon.” He deals largely
in metaphor, but only in such a manner
as to appeal to the understanding and
carry conviction to the heart. With a
master hand he paints the glories of im
mortality, and large congregations of
eager listeners are attracted to the church
nightly to hear him, and the interest in
the meeting seems to be on the increase.

Loss of the Clyde Steamer.
We regret to have to announce what
appears to be the total loss of the steamer
Clyde, on her passage homeward. A
schooner, which arrived at River du Loup,
brought the intelligence that she went on
Monday week upon the Perroquet Shoal,
between Anticosti and the Mingan Is
lands. The schooner brought up the
passengers as far as Point du Montz,
where she fell in with the Anglo-Saxon,
on her downward passage, and put them
on board of her to proceed on her voyage
to England. The news reached us by
telegraph from River du Loup, and the
crew and passengers are spoken of to
gether as having gone in the Anglo-
Saxon. This would seem to indicate
that the Clyde is a total wreck, that
she has been abandoned. We shall doubt
less have full particulars by letter on
Monday. The Clyde was an iron screw
vessel of 1800 tuns, built at Greenock in
1854, and owned by the Clyde Steamship
Company of Glasgow.— Montreal Herald

Fire at Bowdoin College.
A letter in the Bangor Whig, dated at
Brunswick, Me., September 7, says:
East College was entirely consumed by
tire on Sunday morning, 6th inst. It was
beyond doubt the work of an incendiary.
It contained the rooms of the Beta Phi
Society, one of the oldest in the Union. —
A great mauy valuable and interesting
papers, belonging to this society, were
destroyed, which it will be impossible to
replace.
The packing building of Wm. Russell’s
powder mills, in Vermont has been blown
up. The hands employed in the mills had
all left for the night, excepting the watch
man. It is supposed that the building
was fired by two boys about eight years
old, who were playing with matches near
it; and one of them, a son of 11. E. Brad
ford, was instantly killed, and the other
fatally injured. About thirty kegs of
powder were stored in the building, but
the explosion did not materially injure
any of the other houses in the vicinity.

AFFLICTED, READ!—I called to see it lady
from Alabama, who had come to Atlantaon a vi*it.
When l entered the room, l found her sitting in a
chair with tlie glands of her neck so much swollen
and inflamed that she could not turn her head to
the right or left, to speak so as to be heard across
the room. I prevailed with her to try Eureka Oil.
She consented, ami commenced by rubbing it well
on the throat, and gargling frequently, and to my
great astonishment, in three days she pronounced
herself effectually cured, and left for Alabama with
a good supply of the justly celebrated Eureka Oil.

same limb and side, both shoulders, and down the
arm to the en ’s of her fingers; could not walk,
but lay in bed tormented with tlie most excrucia

try the Eureka Oil. She readily agreed to do so,
and commenced rubbing it on the surface three or
four times a day, and in about five days he was
entirely relieved of inflammation and pain. 1 was

Hiu—At Intervals, during thirty years past, my
wife has been subject to rheumatism of the most |
violent cast —say four times a year—sometimes so !
never© as to make it necessaiy to administer large
doses of tho tincture of guiacuin and morphia, and
to rock her like an infant in a large rocking chair,
to induce any repose. Having frequent correspon
dence with my son, (No. 103 Oheatnut street, of
your city,) 1 informed him of an attack she had
about the middle of last mouth, [January] which
was of such severity as to completely paralyse the
system. He, in his anxiety for his mother's wel
fare, sent me a bottle of your Electric Oil; but as 1
am one of tlie practitioners of medicine in our
place, and not a proselyte to any kind of patent
medicine, 1 did hesitate to give it a trial; however,
on reflection, 1 concluded try it, which I did, in
persona, directly up to the letter, and after the
third or fourth application she became rather pas
sive, and before one-third of the bottle was used,
not a single vestige of the disease remained in the
system, and she still continues well, although she
rode out a distance of fourteen miles, without a
renewal of any of the symptoms. 1 therefore feel
it my duty, for the sake of suffering humanity, and
also fully believing that merit, under all circum
stances, should be rewarded, t > forward this testi
monial.
