DAILY SUN. Monday Morning, Sept. 31,1837. Vacancy Pilled. We understand that the Democratic Executive Committee t>f Muscogee coun ty met on Saturday evening and recom mended James M. Russell, Esq., as a suit able person to place upon the Democratic ticket for Representative in the next Leg islature, to fill the vacancy occacioned by the declension of James Hamilton, Esq. We understand that Mr. Russell has con sented to run. IThe Lost Steamer. The California steamer, whose loss we reported in our issue of Saturday, was the Central America, bound from Califor nia to New York, with 000 passengers, and $1,500,000 in gold. Our reason for supposing that it was the steamship Ca- j hawba was that that vessel left New York for Havana and New Orleans, and she was the only steamship that had left for that direction for several days, and it was reported that the vessel was bound for California, and not from there. We give an account of the loss of the i Central America, as related by one of the ; passengers on board the vessel during the storm, who has arrived at Savannah.— According to his account, there have been about one hundred persons saved, of the immense number of her passengers and crew, and these are all that we can have any reasonable hope of being saved.— The Eloise, the Norwegian bark spoken of by Mr. Childs, has arrived at Norfolk, with those picked up at sea, amounting to 44 persons. This is one of the most distressing ac cidents that has ever happened to any American vessel, and has involved a greater loss of life and property. For the Daily Sun. Ed. Sun: What has become of the supply of water we was to be blessed with a few months since? I was very much in hopes that the kind of men had taken hold of that enterprise who would put it through with a vim, and we should not have to pass through another hot, dry and dusty summer solstice without a co pious supply of this element, so neces sary to the general health of our race. It may be possible that our monied men prefer not to invest in such stocks, but I think our city authorities should do so for the benefit of the community gen erally. There is no doubt but that the free use of pure clear water, both in drinking and bathing, is a very great promoter of health, and if our people could be so situated that they could have free access to baths once or twice a day, the general health of our city would be much better. Every merchant should lend a helping hand to the consumma tion of this matter, and not sparingly either, but freely and generously. With a good supply of water to wet Broad street a considerable saving in damaged goods could be realized by every merch ant. I trust this enterprise is not dead, ‘‘but sleepeth ” only for a short season, and when our absent citizens return from their summer retreats the matter will be brought directly before them by someone or more of our enterprising citizens. Pilgarlick. Postal Facilities. The Postmaster General has ordered that in Philadelphia there shall be estab lished branch offices throughout the city for the better and speedier transmission of city letters. This is the London sys tem. Two cents are charged for a letter from one person in the city to another— one cent for the carrier and one for the office, It is taken from the box into which it is dropped to thenextstation, then trans mitted to the party to whom it is address ed. Letters for the mail are sent at once to the main office. These branch post offices are parts of the main office. Tobacco, OF various Brands, will tic sold to merchants at manufacturers’ prices by D.
