The Vote for Governor. The two Houses of the Mississippi Leg islature assembled iu Convention on Tuesday last, to count the votes cast for Governor, at the October election. The following is the result: For William McWillie 28,370 For Edward M. Yerger 14,340 Majority for McWillie 14,031 Our Treaty with Peru. By the treaty with Peru, of which offi cial publication lias just been made, the two high contracting parties recognize as permanent and immutable, the principle “that free ships make free goods;’’ that the effects or merchandize belonging to a Power or nation at war, or to its citizens or subjects, are free from capture and confiscation when found on board of neu tral vessels, with the exception of articles contraband of Avar. They also recognize as permanent and immutable, the doctrine that the property of ueutrals on board of an enemy’s vessel is not subject to detention or confiscation, unless the same be contraband of war, it being also understood that, as far as re gards the two contracting parties, war like articles, destined for the use of either of them, shall not be considered as contraband of war. The ttvo high contracting parties engage to apply these principles to the commerce and naviga tion of all such Powers and States as shall consent to adopt them as permanent and immutable. The other article of the treaty merely relates to the application and carrying out of the principles stated above. . Resuming. Many of the mills and factories in New England are now resuming work—among them the Union Manufacturing Cos., of Norwalk, Ct., the Chicopee (Mass.) mills, the Rolling and Nail mills, and the Mas sasoit Flour mills, at Fall rivor. The American Print Works at Fall river, it is believed, will also soon commence run ning. ♦ Miss Mary Clark Gaines. This lady deserves to rank among the foremost of gifted and extraordinary wo men of this or other times. If hope that no reverse can dampen, faith that holds fast to its conviction though all around may fall, courage that mounts higher with opposition and dares the more the migh tier the foe, will that triumphantly encoun ters man’s will, and intellect that matches man’s intellect, united with a warm, gen erous and magnanimous heart and true womanliness of character—if these con stitute a heroic woman, then is Mrs. Myra Clark Gaines a heroine iu much more than the conventional sense in which the term is employed by romaucists and noyelists. Her history surpasses romance—it is stranger than fiction. Mrs. Gaines is noAV in this city, superin tending iu person the procurement of im portant evidence to be produced in her case before the United- States District Court, sitting in New Orleans next month. This evidence is said to embrace new and start ling discoveries iu records pertaining to the will of Daniel Clarke and the relations between him and Richard Relf, and to be such as to inspire the utmost confidence on the part of Mrs. Gaines in the positive and definite success of her cause. Such a result, after twenty-five years of wonder ful perseverance and heroic struggle, would seem to vindicate the existence of a just God who will not forsake those who, convinced of the justico of their cause, trust in Him and refuse to despair. —JV.
