Our lady readers are now afforded an opportunity to obtain “something to wear,” end even if Miss Flora McFlimsey were here, she would no longer have cause to complain of the ecantiness of her wardrobe, if she had a reasonably lengthy i purse. Mr. Hunter, also, wishing to afford j the people an opportunity to clothe them- I selves at small cost, is selling his goods at such prices as are in the limits of a 1 very lean “weasel skin.” See his ad- 1 vertisement. Bain. On Saturday we had a regular old time winter’s rain, which left our streets in a condition that extorted a smile from man ufacturers of water proof boots, and deal ers in india rubber shoes and warm tods. Our river, which has been in fair boating order for a few days past, will be amply supplied mith water for all practical pur poses, by this timely addition. Acknowledgment. That our correspondent “McM.,” (to whose communication in another column wo ask leave to refer) is a “butcher by trade,” we have ocular demonstration in the shape of a luscious rump roast, juicy steaks, to say nothing of the “link-ed sweetness long drawn out” of “them sns singers.” When we say grace over the meats, the “butcher by trade” will most certainly be gratefully remembered.— May his shadows never be less ! Drowned. Yesterday in the forenoon, an old man by the name of McAlister, for many years employed in some capacity about the Fac tories in this city, accidently fell into the river and was drowned befote he could be recovered. Homicide. A difficulty occurred at a house of ill fame near the steamboat landing, on Fri day nightj last, between two young men by the names of John J. Calhoun and James Thompson, in which the former was cut in several places in so serious a manner as to cause npprehension for his recovery. Thompson, after committing the deed, made his escape from the city, but was captured at Silver Run, Alabama, and brought to town on Saturday evening and placed in jail, whence he wilt be brought on Monday before the commit ting magistrates for examination. They are both quite young men, neither of them being over twenty years of age. Thomp son is a fast youth, and has been arraign ed once before for a very serious crime. Young Calhoun is a painter by trade, and we understand, is an industrious young man, and was the main stay of a family of younger brothers and sisters. The law in relation to the keeping af houses of the description of those at which the cutting took place should be enforced so rigidly as to make it such a terror to their keepers, it would drivo them out from the community. P. S.—Since the above was in type we learn that Calhoun died about 11 o’clock yesterday. Sharp Practice. One of our most eminent physicians was victimized on Friday night last, by a darkey, to the tune of a fine overcoat, in the following manner. A short time after supper, a negro man called at the Doc tor’s house and stated that a gentleman who does business in town, but resides in the country, desired him to go out to his house to see a patient, and that he need not get his horse and buggy, as the gen tleman was waiting for him at the Post Office with his horse and buggy. The Doctor thought rather strange of this, as he was not in the habit of practicing in the gentleman’s family, but suspecting nothing, proceeded immediately to the Post Office, and not finding the gentleman therp, waited for him a short time, and as he did not appear, be returned home. During the Doctor’s absence the same ne gro resumed and told the servant that her master wanted his overcoat, as he was go ing out in the country, which the girl handed to him, when he went off with it in the direction of the Post Office. The Dootor knew nothing of it until next morning, when he inquired for his coat to go out in towD, and was told by the servant what had happened. The gentle iqan peportod to have sent for the Doctor knows nothing of the matter, and at the time spoken of, was at home with his fam ily. This is what we should call sharp practice fora negro, and is a caution to our citizens that there are sharpers about, ei ther African or Caucasian. The first panel of the Grand Jury for the No vember Term, 1857, of Muscogee Superior Court, beg leave to make the following general present ments: We have ascertained that there are 891 children in the county entitled to the benefit of the free school fund. We have examined the condition of the public roads, and find them (with some exceptions) in good order. The Old Bt. Mary’s Road is very much out of repair and much neglected. The road from Schumpert’s Mill, on the Old Express lload, isulso out of repair. The bridge over Bull Creek, ou the St. Mary’s Road; also the one on Gully Branch, the one on the Talbotton Road, and two of those on the River Road, near Jefferson Biggers’, are in a dilapidated and dangerous condition, and need tho immediate attention of the proper authorities. We find the Jail in a condition creditable to the Jailor, though in our opinion the building needs considerable improvements; the rooms are poorly ventilated and are destitute of any means of warm ing them. The interior arrangement of the prison admits of no difference in the treatment of the various classes of offenders confined therein. We respectfully suggest that thiß should be remedied. We have examined the bo<ks in the offices of the Clerks of the Superior and Inferior Courts, and find them fully written up, as well as neatly and correctly kept, as also the books of tho County Treasurer, by which we find the receipts since the last examination to be $3,6*16 70, and the expendi tures $3,666 89, leaving in his hands a balance of $24 43. We respectfully suggest to the Legislature of the State now in session, the abolition of all laws on the subject of Usury, and allowing monies, like other values, to be regulated by the supply and demand. We find that during the progress of the repairs new’ making on the Court House cupola and roof, the building has been left in an uncovered and ex posed condition, and that the recent heavy rains have reached and damaged the ceilings and cor nices in both stories, thus increasing considerably the expense of repairs. We regret that the Infe rior Court should have suffered the work to be commenced and prosecuted to this time without taking bond and security for the faithful perform ance thereof, as required in their advertisement for proposals in August last. In view of the manifest injustice which frequent ly results to our community by a population which hangs around our court room for the purpose of being caught on the jurj’ as talesmen, (who are incompetent to attend to their own private affairs, and seek this position for the compensation at tached to it,) whereby they are made competent in law to adjudicate great legal questions, frequent ly involving the lives and liberties of the citizen— we respectfully urge upon our Senator and Repre sentatives the propriety of having a law passed by the present Legislature restricting the service of all jurors for this county to only one week, and that without any compensation whatever. In taking leave of his Honor, Judge Worrill, we cannot forbear the expression of our opinion of the dignity, ability and and courtesy with which he has discharged tho onerous duties of his high posi tion. In view of the labors devolving on his sta tion, we earnestly recommend to the Legislature that his salary bo increased to at least twenty-five hundred dollars per annum for this Circuit.
