COLUMBUS: UROBST CITY CIRCULATION. Saturday Morning, Dec. 13, 1857. Prnidcnt’i Message. The great interest felt in this state paper, is our only apology for devoting so much of our space to its publication this morning. We have done it at the cost of great fatigue, having not only put it iu type after the receipt of the morn ing’s mail at 9 o’clock, but in addition to this, in the same time, we were compell ed, in order to accommodate customers, to turn out job work to the worth of over fifty dollars. The work was performed with the addition of one hand to out regular force. What interior printing establishment can beat this ? Our city coteinporaries only compete by doubling j forces. One advantage we possess, ! however, is, that all persons in any way , connected with the Sun office, are prin ters, and all take the case in a pressure. The Legislature. A letter from Col. Mott informs us that on the 10th instant, a bill passed the House, authorizing the purchase, by the State, of the Georgia Military Institute, and making the necessary appropriations for it. The bill passed the House by a vote of 94 to 38. The bill has been sent to the Senate for concurrence. The bank bill had not been taken up in the House up to the evening of the 10th. A joint resolution has passed both houses, fixing the 22d for the adjourn ment of the Legislature. Also, fixing the Ist Wednesday in November, 1858, for convening the next Session of the General Assembly. Escaped from Jail. We learn from the Lafayette (Ala.) Tribune, that on the morning of the 4th instant, two prisoners, to-wit, Jerre Bayne, charged with the murder of W. H. Smith, and Frank Tapley, charged with the murder of Thomas Robinson, escaped from the Jail of Chambers Coun ty. The Sheriff has offered a reward of two hundred dollars for their apprehen sion. Jere Bayne is about twenty-six years old. six feet'high, has black hair, and when he left wore black whiskers—it is supposed, however, he will shave them off. Bayne has a sallow or dark com plexion, is rather thin visaged, very erect when standing, and weighs about oue hundred and forty pounds. He has dark grey eyes, is rather slow spoken, and, when well dressed, is a man of rather prepossessing appearance. Frank Tapley is about thirty years old, five feet nine inches high, has dark hair, and when he left wore black whiskers.— He has blue eyes, sallow complexion, Bharp nose and small head. He is quite slender, rather quick-spoken and impul sive, and weighs about one hundred and twenty-five pounds. The Lafayette (Ala.) Herald learns that someone from Chambers County made a heavy draw on the Bank of Columbus last week- We hope the individual feels better. News from Washington. We are indebted to the Augusta Consti tutionalist for the following telegraphic items : Washington, Dec. 10.— In the Senate to-day the Hon. Stephen A. Douglas gave notice of the introduction of a bill to en able the people of Kansas to hold a con vention and form a Constitution prepara tory to its admission into the Union. In Executive session, the Hon. James W. Denver (ex-member of Congress from California) was confirmed as Secretary of State for Kansas. The lion. William A. Richardson, of Illinois, was ceufiroied as Governor of Nebraska. In the House no business of importance or general interest was transacted. ))oth branches of Congress have ad journed until Monday to enable the Speak er of the llouso to appoint the commit tees. Thos. J. Semmes has been appointed District Attorney of New Orleans, iu the place of the present incumbent, who has been removed for want of due diligence iu preventing the departure of the fili busters. The removal of Governor Walker is daily looked for. The Hon. N. Clifford, of Maine, has been nominated and confirmed by the Senate, to the vacancy on the bench of the Supreme Court. Hadden Death of Cos), Wm. Turnbull. WIUfDfGTGN, N. 0., Dec. 10.—Brevet Colonel Wm. Turnbull, of the United States Army, was found dead in his room, at the Carolina Hotel this morning. His remains will be carried to Washington City. Colonel T. was connected with the Topographical Engineer corps.
