Deatli of an Old Printer. Samuel Wright Minor, probably the oldest printer in Georgia, died in Macon, last Thursday, after a lingering illness of three months. He was born in Queen Anne’s county, Maryland, in the year 1781, and removed to Georgia early in iife. He served an apprenticeship in the office of William J. Bunco, of Augusta. The General Land Office Report. The General Land Office Report shows an aggregate of public lands disposed of during the five quarters ending Sept. 30, 1857, of a little ovev twenty-one millions of acres. Os this, the proportion grant el to Alabama and Minnesota for Rail road purposes, pursuant to the act of Congress, is about five millions. Os nearly thirteen millions of acres sold and loc ited, it is calculated that about three fourths were taken for actual settlement. The falling off under this latter head s nee the previous report is more than six mil lions of acres, and the cash receipts have diminished in a still larger proportion. These facts are accounted for by the large grants made to railroads during the last Congress, the reduced prices fixed by the graduation act, and the additional lands placed at the disposal of the States under the swamp improvement and other grants. Os th • twenty-four millions of acres granted since 1849 to railroads in differ ent States (teu States.aud one Territory,) nearly twonty-one millions were disposed of by the last Congress. The bounty laud warrants to officers and soldiers granted since 1847 cover nearly fifty-four millions of acres, of which about thirty eight have beon located. Undor this head there are still awaiting location about fif teen millions of acres. The views of the commissioner touch ing the policy of the government, iu the disposal of the public domain, favor the interests of the actual settlers, and op pose any policy that would allow a mo nopoly in the hands of speculators. Up on this subject he uses the following lan guage : “The wisdom of the pre-emption policy is no longer the subject of controversy— it is established by tire history of every neighborhood and settlement throughout the West. This is said in full view of the fact that many fraudulent pre-emption ciaims are established by invasion and perjury : and that such will be the case, even under the most diligent administra tion of this and the local offices, especi ally during periods such as that through which we have recently passed, where the spirit of speculation has possession of the public mind. ‘•But this class of cases, when compar ed with the great body of honest claims made by men living upon the lands, is too considerable to weigh against our policy. The title to the lands should pass imme diately from the government to the men who are to cultivate the soil. So far as it may be avoided, the speculator should not be allowed to intervene. With a view to uniformity and practicability in the system, important amendments of the pre-emption laws are recommended.” The report shows an activity in our surveying operations, during the five quarters ending September 30, 1857, be yond that of any preceding period—and that the quantity of new lauds now liable to be disposed of exceeds, by many mil lions of acres, the surveyed lands of any former period. On the Pacific slope the surveys have been pushed with extraordinary rapidity ; upwards of 80,000 miles have been exe cuted iu California at the expense of a million of dollars. From the Athene Watchman. A New Invention. As many of our town readers are doubt less aware, Mr. Thomas S. Reynolds invented anew power press some two or three years ago—since which time he has been experimenting with, and im proving upon the original design, until it is believed he has succeeded in bringing it to a state of perfection. He exhibited to us the other day, a beautiful model of it, which he has prepared to send to the Patent Office. MThe leading object sought to be accom ished by Mr. Reynolds, was to simplify the construction, and thereby so far lessen the cost of power presses as to place them within reach of every country newspaper establishment. We think he has succeeded admirably in the accom plishment of his task. Our opinion is well founded, being based upon a practi cal test —having repeatedly seen one of his presses in successful operation within the past few months. The speed of his press is from fifteen hundred to two thousand impresoions per hour, and the cost from foolscap size to double medium, from two to five hundred dollars only. When it is remembered that Hoe’s power presses cost from twelve hundred to three thousand dollars, it will be seen that Mr. Reynolds’ machine is compara tively cheap. It is simple and ingenious in its construction, performing its work with elegance and accuracy, aud not at all liable to get out of repair. We are aware that some two or three cheap power presses have been invented within the past few years, (the Northup and the Princeton presses,) but printers complain that they get out of order iu a little while. Mr. Reynolds has entirely over come this difficulty in his machine, which we most cordially commend to the atten tion of the fraternity. When he gets his patent, (which we trust will be in a short time,) he will no doubt make arrangements for supplying the trade with a power press that com bines speed, cheapness, accuracy, and durability in an eminent degree. In the meantime Athens may feel just ly proud of this invention. #(ji Mill &mt. VOL. III.} HARTFORD FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY. INCORPORATED IN 1810. Capital Stock $500,000.
