Senator Hammond, As will be seen from the accompanying letter, has declined the dinner tendered him at this place, but will, on his return from Washington, seek an early opportu nity to meet his friends: Radcliffe, Dec. 8, 1857. Gentlemen : I have received your letter inviting me, in the name of the people of Barnwell, to a public dinner. On full reflection, I have concluded, contrary to my inclinations, to decline it. I have been most unexpectedly sum moned by our State to represent her in the Federal Senate, at a moment when, it seems, that issues of the most vital import are about to be tried. I atn not aware that I have in thirty years changed, or materially modified, any of my views of the Federal Constitution, or the princi ples upon which it should be interpreted and carried out by the Federal Govern ment, but 1 have been for some years so inattentive to the details of affairs, that I should be unwilling, in view of the re sponsibilities that rest upon me, to com mit myself to any special course of action until I reach Washington, ascertain facts, and apply the test of principles to what may be urged as expedient. Were I to meet you now, it would be improper that I should speak to you of anything but our personal relations ; and my emotions would wholly prevent me doing that. What could Isay? At an early age I settled myself as a farmer, in a remote and obscure corner of your dis trict —asking and expecting nothing of a public character ; aud using no arts, but to do what I found to do will all my might. You took me by the hand, you brought me forward ; and, for more than a quarter of a century, you have reposed unwavering confidenee iu me Not only now, but on every occasion during that long period, you have sustained me with a warmth of affection, a firmness of pur pose, and an unanimity that can hardly be paralelled. If every earthly interest of mine was not inextricably wrapped up with yours, I should be a monster if I could be un faithful to you. Nor would Ibe less one if untrue to my old congressional district and our generous, confiding aud beloved State, for which we are all ready to sac rifice, at any moment, all we have and are. On my return from Washington, I will seek an early opportunity to meet my Barnwell friends, and give them freely and faithfully my opinions on affairs. Very respectfully, Your obedient servant, J. H. HAMMOND. Messrs. A. P. Aldrich, J. Patterson, I. M. Hutson, W. A. Owens, J. J. Brown. ” FRESH JIACKKRKL, IN Kit*, No*. 1 and 2, just received by Sept/lfk MAKCUB A RAGLAND. BLAU.
