Mr. Lamar, the proprietor of this paper, offers a half iuterest in the establishment for sale. He says : “The Paper has now a Subscription and Advertising patronage larger than it has ever before enjoyed, and its circulation iis as varied and exten sive as any Journal in the State. To a thoroughly competent business man a half interest would be sold on the most accom modating terms.” Advertising. The Baltimore American, in a very sensible article on advertising, says : The successful advertisements must be presented through the right means, and come before the reader at the right time to secure his favorable consideration.— The means is the daily paper. To that the purchaser looks as the legitimate place for the information he seeks, and lie finds it there when most in the dispo sition to dwell upon its statements and note its facts. There it meets the eye of the reader when he is at leisure to note its import. He has it repeated to him day after day, and as his wants are sug gested, he recurs to it for guidance. It is in its legitimate place, having a proper publicity, but not obstrusively or surrep titiously forced upon his notice, and therefore is not met with distrust. The coincidence between his needs and the places at which they may be supplied is naturally established, and the fact that the establishment he seeks is known by its prominence among those which press their claims through a proper channel, begets confidence and produces the desir ed result. No man who has relied upon this means of advertising, and judiciously pursued it, has ever regretted the expen diture in view of the results, while iustances are repeatedly occurring in which thousands of expensive circulars, distributed liberally among those it was desired to reach, have failed in produc ing any appreciable advantage. The Acquisition of Cuba. TheNew Orleans Courier, arguing from the stand-point that Kansas will likely, at last, come into the Union as a free State, presses the acquisition of Cuba during the present term of Mr. Buchanan, *p supply its loss to the South. It says : “We learned many years ago from his (Buchanan’s) great speech on the Panama mission, that the Moro was practically a fortress at the mouth of the Mississippi. It ought, therefore, to belong to the United States. The acquisition of Cuba is a question of far greater importance to us than auy other now before the admin istration. It would be a peculiarly fit time to annex it as a slave State, when it could be made a twin sister to a free State from the West. All parties ought to be satisfied—the great majority of all parties would be. Mr. Buchanan would earn the crowning gtory of his life, and the whole Mississippi valley would em balm his name among those of their he roes. Peace and quiet would be restored to the North, security would be given to the commerce of the South and West, and the people of Cuba would prosper as they never prospered before.” The Courier urges it upon the Louisi ana members of Congress to stand up to this question. Eclipses. In the year of 1858 there will be four eclipses—two of the sun and two of the moon. Ist. A partial eclipse of the moon February 27th, only partly visible in the United States. The moon will rise partly eclipsed, which will take place generally after the time of the greatest phase. 2d. Au annular eclipse of the sun, March 15th. The sun will be centrally •eclipsed on the meridian in longitude 8 45 west of Greenwich, latitude 45 44 uorth. Iu some parts of the United States the sun will be partially eclipsed. 3d. A partial eclipse of the moon, Aug. 24th. At some places the first contact with the penumbra will not be visible ; but at most places in the United States the whole eclipse will be visible. 4th. A total eclipse of the sun Sep tember 7th. This eclipse will be total on the meridian. The sun will be centrally eclipsed in the southern hemisphere only. The HuntsviHe (Ala.'l Advocate, speak ing of the damage to the Memphis and Charleston Kail Road by the late heavy rains, says: We had no mails by the Rail Road from Tuesday night of last week until Monday night of this. We have but little news to give our readers. There were breaks in the road at Hurri cane, Indian and Limestone ereeks nt Glendale and at 95 mile station. Two engines broke through, one fireman killed and engineer Wood badly hurt. The road will be fully repaired this week, and the passenger train is now running. The Tennessee River is higher than it has been since the flood of 1847—it is about three feet below the flood of that year. It is now about on a stand. Immense damage has resulted from the overflow of the low grounds. All the small rivers and streams in this region were higher than ever known before.
