Temperance Hall was crowded last night, to witness the performance of Sig nor Blitz, and as is universally the case, all went away not only pleased but high ly delighted, and most of them determin ed to go agaiu to-night. Any one afflict ed with the blues can iind a certain and infallable remedy in attending the Sig nor’s exhibitions He performs again this afternoon and to-night. All go and hear him. For the Daiiy Sun. Our City—No. 5. What a beautiful prospect does our side-walks and streets present during a rainy season, to those who are compelled to avail themselves of the “people’s line’’ to attend to their business ; and more than all, the dear women, who have their little shopping to do. We must all wear rub bers or have wet feet, and even with rub bers on we get bespattered with mud, aimost from our feet to our heads. To attempt one of the crossings is a herculean task, more especially for the ladies, who are notused or fond of wading through mud. As for water, they cau abide that under pressing circumstances, but where did you ever see or know a woman who could endure mud for a mo ment. This matter calls for some serious action on your part, Messrs. Aldermen, and 1 suggest that you at once raise a Special Committee, on Ways and Means, to relieve muddy streets. Our pavements are the horror of all who are afflicted with corns, and such as have none are soon bound to have a “crap,” unless you shall take steps to prevent it. In other cities the pavements are taken under the super vision of the Councilmen, and all owners of property are compelled to have them kept even and smooth. If you would prescribe that all pavements should be laid with granite, tiag stone or common marble, you would soon abate the nui sance of corns, aud then macadamise your crossings, you would receive the thanks of all the beauty of Columbus and vicini ty, and also of _ CITIZEN. Fr.jm tho Cumberland (Md.) Telegraph. Great Bank Defalcation in Maryland. This community was not a little star tled, on Tuesday evening, at some as tounding developments in regard to the affairs of the Mineral Bank of Maryland. In overhauling the books, Messrs. John Beall and Geo. A. I’earre, the trustees, discovered that funds of the Bank amount ing to the enormous sum of $122,700 had been drawn out by the President of the Bank on fifteen several bills of ex change, drawn by the President on the 10th day of February, 1854. Mr. Tucker, the late President, left this place some two weeks since for the purpose, as alleged by the trustees, of defrauding his creditors. As soon, there fore, as the overhauling of the books ex posed the matter, the trustees forthwith sued out an attachment, which was im mediately placed in the hands of the sheriff aud a levy made upon the personal effects ot Joseph H. Tucker. The affidavit shows a further indebted ness to the Bank on the part of the presi dent, making with the $122,700 men tioned above, a total indebtedness of near $150,000. A small portion of that amount has been secured by mortgage On his real estate in this county. Coin vs. Bank Notes. In 1834, the present Chief Justice of the United States, Roger B. Taney, at that time Secretary of the Treasury, laid down the following economical axioms : “Gold and silver will never circulate where Banks issue notes that come in coiapetition with them ; for it will inva riably happen that when the circulating medium is composed of different kinds of money, and one of them is less valuable than the other, but not sufficiently depre ciated to be discredited, the inferior will, after a time, become the general curren cy, and the more valuable will entirely disappear. This is obvious in tho States where the Banks issue notes as low as one dollar} for silver dollars are never found in circulation where paper ones are freely issued by the Banks. In order, therefore, to bring the precious metals into use, the rivalship of paper must be effectually taken away. We must not remove the notes of the Bank of the United States, but also those of the State Banks.” Tile Utah Delegate in Congress, A Washington letter gives this sketch of Mr. Bernhisel: The delegate is one of the most quiet and pleasant gentlemen in the House. In deportment, tone and voice, person and countenance, he bears a striking resem blance to Robert J. Walker. He is a na tive of Pennsylvania. He looked hag gard and worn after his long journey over the plains, on his first arrival, but has singe recruited. Although he has been in the House for six years, I recol lect bearing him speak but once, and that was to protest against any discussion of social and domestic institutions of Utah. His forte is taciturnity. In pri vate conversation he is tiuent and ngreea ble. He is an industrious man of business, and attends faithfully to the interests of his constituents. He is rather short of statue. His head is nearly bald, with iron gray locks projecting diagonally from the skull near the ears, upward and for. ward, resembling the horns with which the old masters used to embellish their portraits of Satan, who was and is noted as a long-headed politician. Plug Uglylsm In Baltimore, The total number of deaths in the city of Baltimore, during the year 1857, was 6,5511, of which uumber 20 were by gun shot and 13 by violence. From 1850 to 1855, a period of six years, there were 10 deaths from gunshot, while in 1856 and 1867, two years, there were 46 deaths from gunshot. Quite an increase. In tho year 1851 I had a negro hoy who was subject to fits, and while sit ting by the fire one night he fell in and burnt cue of his feet so severely that it made him unable to do any work, and he has been a cripple over since, and has been able to do uo work of any conse* quence. 1 have tried several remedies, aud have had him under tho care of several physicians, with out any apparent benefit. Hearing of the wonder ful cures being effected by the Eureka Oil, I con cluded to try it. 1 have used it but a shoit time, and the great change wrought has satisfied me I have at last found the cure.
