A young lady in one of tho leading cir cles at Washington was complimented by a gentleman on the simplicity and good taste of her dress, at an evening party. She replied: “I am glad you like my dress ; it cost just eleveu dollars, aud I made every stitch of it myself!” When our young ladies pride themselves upon the home manufacture and cheapness of their attire, iustead of the expensiveness and foreign importation, we shall have fewer “broken” fathers and husbands. Another Slave Case Decided. The Chicago Times reports a case just decided by the Supreme Court of Illi nois : A citizen of Missouri brought a suit against the Illinois Central Kail Koud, in Trover, for a slave, who, taking passage on the cars of that company, was taken to Chicago, and beyond the possession of the owner. The court below sustained a demurer to the declaration, and the case was argued before the Supreme Court, which reaffirms the doctrine of the Su preme Court of the United States in the Dred Scott case, that the status of a ne gro depends upon the laws of the State from which he may come. The laws of Missouri do not follow and determine tho status of a negro while he is in Illinois, nor do the laws of Illinois follow a negro to Missouri and determine his condition there. From tlio Western Democrat. Erlract from tlie Record of Tryan County, N. C. On the Oth of Oct., 1780, the brilliant victory at Kings Mountain was achieved. The Whig spirit everywhere once more assumsd the ascendant, and Toryism re ceived a blow from which it never after wards recovered. At the October Term, about two weeks after this battle, the following record appears : “Ordered by the Court that Thomas White, Sheriff of Lincoln County, take into his possession immediately all Tory property in the hands of different indi viduals, and hold the same under his ju risdiction according to law.” During the year 1781, numerous orders were passed for the relief of widows, and the wounded. To this effect are the fol lowing : “Ordered that John Chittim be allowed the sum of £12,000, in consequence of a wound he received whilstin the service of this State ; and Captain Samuel Epsy, and Robert Parks, £IO,OOO each.” “Ordered that the widows of John Boyd, John Nattocks, and Moses Ilonry, be allowed the sum of £IO,OOO each.” These large allowances were made on account o the great depreciation of Con tinental money. “Ordered that Arthur Patterson have an abatement of £79 10s. in his tax for the year 1780, on account of damage he received from the British.” “Ordered that John Forney and his two sons pay no tax for the year 1780.” During this year Cornwallis, in pursuit of Morgan, encamped on Forney’s planta tion, and oommitted serious depreda tions. At the April Term, 1782, it was “or dered by the Court that the Commission ers of confiscated property take into their eustody all the confiscated estates whose owners are with the enemy.” At the January Term, 1793, it was further “ordered that tho negroes sup posed to be confiscated, now iu the hands of the Commissioners of confiscated pro perty, be hired out for one year, with this condition that they shall be delivered up to Commissioners when demanded, and tho hirers to pay for the time they had them in use.” Nutriment of Indian Corn. Late scientific experiments and a bet ter acquaintance with the habits of the Indians, have shown that a vegitable oil answers the same purposes as animal food ; that one pound of parched Indian oorn, or an equal quantity made into bread, is equal to two pounds of fat meat. Indian corn meal contains almost four times as much oleaginous matter as wheat flour; more starch, aud consequently ca pable of produoing more sugar, and thoughfless gluten than in other impor tant compounds, it contains nearly as much nitrogenous material. The combi nation of alimentary compounds in Indian corn, renders it alone tho mixed diet ca pable of sustaining man under the most extraordinary circumstances; and corn iueal is capable of supplying more of the absolute wants of the adult human sys tem than any other single substance in nature. A Simple Remedy. A writer in the Baltimore Sun, who has been afflicted severely in his family, by that appalling disease, bronchitis, has found relief from the following remedy : Take honey iu the comb, squeeze it out, and dilute it with water, and wet the lip and mouth occasionally with it. It has never been known to fail, in cases where children had throats so swollen as to be unable to swallow. It is certainly a sim ple remedy, and may be a very efficacious one. The London Times explains the com mercial orash of England to the existence of commercial frauds, and the prevalence of fictitious papers. In New York there are people who occupy fine offices near Wall street, who will issue notes for S6OO if they are paid $lO for doing it. All the exiled French Qenerals have re ceived permission to return to France without oonditions. VOL. III.} HARTFORD FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY. INCORPORATED IN 1810. Capital Stock $500,000.
