daily suisr. Wednesday Morning, Jan. '47, 1858. As will be seen by reference to our ail vhrtising oolumns, Dr. H. M. Cleckley still continues the practice oi medicine. Those requiring his servioeg will find him at his old stand. Waogh’i Italia. This beautiful Panorama will be on ex hibition this afternoon and to-night, at Temperance Hall. Let everybody and his wife go and see it, and be certain and take all the littlo evorybodies. The press, where it has been exhibited, combine in speaking in the highest praise of it as a painting of exquisite taste and finish, ami as it represents one of the most ro mantic spots of earth, it is invested with an interest which appeals at ouce to the poetic feelings of every one. Go early ami secure a favorable seat. An Ugly Day. Yesterday was one of thoso days which always gives us the blues, and makes us wish we had nothing to do in particular/ ami a great many good, clever, jovial fellows to help us. It was rain, rain, rain, all the day, and mud, mud, mud, on the street, on the crossings, in the hous es, on the sidewalks, everywhere the eye could turn. Crinoline was confined with in doors, and fancy merchants wgro suf fered to enjoy one day of rest, because of the want of customers. At the time we write this article heavy clouds obscure the sky, indicating a night of floods, if not of tempests. The French Embasay and the Nic araguan Treaty. The Washington Star that the Washington correspondent of the Courier des Etats IJnis is generally understood to be “inspired” by tiie French Embassy in the Federal City, and, therefore, attrib utes importance to tho following extracts from that correspondence : “What will England then say and do? It is probable that, perceiving the irre coverable ruin of her Central American Empire, she will have some idea of pro testing, and require a slice of the cake ; but it will be a little late to resuscitate the Clayton-Bulwer treaty, already now dead and buried, under the firmly and clearly decided intention of Mr. Buchan an to put an end to the British influence on this continent. The British Cabinet will, besides, find itself bound by the ap probation which it gives now to the first acts of a political drama of which it is far from seeing the denouement. What title will it have, what argument will it urge, to complain of taking a possession of which it probably now approves in ad vance ? When Lord Palmerston accepts the Yrrissarri treaty, when Lord Napier is innocently in ecstacy before the very clear declarations of the President, nei ther of them seem to suspect that that treaty and those declarations prepare for proud Albion one of the most signal dis comfitures which she has ever submitted to. But, astonished or not, their adhe sion to what is going on now will not in the least authorize that which will take place at some future time, and John Bull will have to consent unconditionally to abdicate his rule in Central America’ or to fight with Brother Jonathan. “As to seeing the latter back a single step on that ground, I repeat, it is not to be expected. It is precisely not to have to recoil under any circumstances, that Mr. Buchanan is so particular about clearing the road of everything that may have the odor of illegality and violence. He wants to enter the Isthmus of Nicara gua with a flag of truce in his hand, and upon the faith of treaties, so that nobody may pretend to expel him from it. The tactics which he has adopted for this oc casion exhibit great skill, and .if Con gress was anything but an assemblage of individual ambition, it would hasten to lend a hand to it. “In order, however, that the plan of Mr. Buchanan might retain all its gran deur and escape all blame, he would have to make allowance for Central America herself Doubtless the annexation, such as he understands and announces it, loses the odious character of violent conquest and forced acquisition ; nevertheless, it is to a certain point stained with egotism. The question, finally, is still one of ex pansion to the profit to the Anglo-Saxon race, by treading down on the passage of other nationalities. Instead of annihila ting the latter, would it not be more wor thy of the powerful American republic to make them thrive and prosper under shelter ? It is impossible to suppose, in the case of Central America, that prompt assimilation with the United States which took place in Texas?” Suggestive. A New Orleans papor presents a very suggestive paragraph, in the following, which he entitles “The March to the Grave o£ 1857 What a mighty procession have been moving toward the grave during the past year! At the usual estiuiato, since the first of January, 1857, thore have more than thirty onv million Jive hundred thousand of the world’s population gone down to the grave. Place them in long nrray, and they will give n moving column of more than thirteen hundred to every mile of the circumference of the globe. What a spectacle, as they move on, tramp, tramp, tramp, tho “Dead March,” giving its funeral notes as they go to tho silent shades! liig Cypres*. The Tampa (Fla.) Peninsular has the following : Capt. A. A. Stewart, of tho Florida Regiment, arrived in this place on Tues day last. Capt. S. has examined the Big Cypress and says that the land is worth contending for. He states that tho soil of the swamp is richer than any portion of Louisiana, and that it can easily be re claimed. He also states that there are thousands of acres of hammock land, (generally called islands) which are high and only await the touch of civilization to teem with unprecedented yields of our staplo productions. Capt. S. declines again entering the service. The Statue Upon the Monument. The equestrian statue of Washington was raised to the top of the monument yesterday, bat owing to some miscalcula tion as to the dimension of some of the holes or fastenings, or the distance be tween them, it could not be lowered to its place and was left resting upon timbers, until the necessary alteration are made. Une thing is now clear, that in size and height the shaft is entirely too dimiutive for the weight of the statue. — Rich. Dis. OOIVEIVtEPiai.A.Ij. DAILY SUN OFFICE, I Columbus, Jttuu&ry 27, 1668.
