DAILY SXJ IST.
Thuriday Morning, Feb. 11, 1858.
Tbe Steamer South Caroliua arrived at
our wharf yesterday, and will leave to
day at 12 o’clock, M., for Apalachicola.
The Steamer General Stokeß, Captain
llodgson, arrived last, night, and leaves
to-morrow for Apalachicola.
New Advertisement*.
Tbe Palace Mills, notwithstanding it is
out of running order, appears determined
not to be outdone in selling flour as cheap
as the cheapest. Pitch in, gentlemen,
we are glad to see a spirit of rivalry be
tween you, to furnish the people with
bread at prices in accordance with the
stringency of the times.
As tbe Carter Factory is now in the
ring, with corn meal, we hope this arti
cle will also decline in corresponding
ratio with other neccessaries. See ad
vertisement.
Messrs. Ragland & Birch have received
a large lot of flour, so that the peoplo
need have no apprehensions of starving
so long as they can raise the where-witli
to buy with. See advertisement.
Whoever lias taken up the canary bird
advertised to day will get more than the
worth of it by returning it to the owner.
Carry it home at once and make $5, and
spare yourself any reproach of conscience,
if you happen to have any of the incon
venient commodity on hand.
“Give the devil his due,” is a homely
maxim, but contains a great moral prin
ciple. Recognizing its justice, we will
state that we were misinformed as to the
person concerned in inveigling the girl
we alluded to yesterday, from the Orplinn
Asylum, to a house of ill fame. How
ever guilty she may have been of other
offences of a like character, she was inno
cent of this, and the blnme lies in another
party, equally as bad and deserving of
censure. We understand the girl denies
that there was any outsidd influence
brought to bear in determining her
course, and that she acted solely on her
own responsibility. While on this sub
ject, we will state that we have it from
reliable authority, that there are other
negro women of like character with the
one alluded to, who are as bad, or worse
than this one. If such be the case they
ought to be driven from the city at once,
and never suffered to return.
The guardian of the woman alluded to
yesterday, is taking steps to rid the city
of her presence, and she was to leave yes
terday for parts remote, but whether she
got off or not we have not been apprised.
We are satisfied, however, if she has not
already left, she will leave very soon.—
Let the work go bravely on, until onr
city has been rid of the hundred and one
worthless characters who infest it.
American Ocean Steamers.
A recent American writer on ocean
steam navigation, says that the United
States have only fifty-seven steamers,
measuring 94,795 tons, while Great. Britain
has one thousand six. hundred and seventy
—with an aggregate measurement of
606,330 tons. We have twenty-two
steamers, of 45,000 tons, engaged in the
foreign ana domestic mail service, while
Great Britain has one hundred and
twenty-one, 0f235,448 aggregate tonnage,
engaged in the foreign mail service
almost exclusively. We have thirty-seven
steamers engaged in the coasting trade,
while she has one thousand five hundred
mid forty-eight similarly employed. The
steam mail service of Great Britain costs
that government nearly six millions of
dollars annually, while the direct returns
in postage amount to very little above
that sum.
The same author says that American
steamers do not last, on an average, more
than ten years; that to put anew set of
boilers in one of the Collins’ steamers,
which must be done every six years,
costs about one hundred and ten thousand
dollars; that a trip of the Arago or
Fulton to Havre and back costs about
forty-five thousand dollars ; and that,
while to run a Collins steamer of 3,000
tons, at the rate of fourteen miles an
hour, as has frequently been done,
consumes one hundred und twenty-eight
tons of coal per day, she can be run at
the rate of twelve miles an hour with a
daily consumption of eighty tons, or
eleven miles with sixty-ono tons. Tbe
power or coal necessary to produce speed
increases as the cube of the velocity.
Slavery In California.
Senator Gwin, some years ago, carried
several slaves with him to California, who
after working a year, sued him for wages.
The case has lately been decided by Judge
Norton, of San Franisco, who in his de
cision, stated that no contract was proved,
and that the circumstances of these
slaves bore an analogy to those of adult
children who remained with their parenti
and worked for them. The law would not
imply a promise to pay wages; and some
proof of contract or request must be
proved to justify a judgment in favor of
the claimant.
A Painful Case.
R. W. Young, a young man most re
spectably connected in Washington, was
arrested there on Tuesday, on charge of
embezzling money from the city post office.
He was held to $6,000 bail for his appear
auce at the next term of the Criminal
Court.
4W” Piles are on* of the moHt troublesome, a*
well as painful afflictions of the human family,
the cause of which, if inquired into, in variably is
found to bo constipated bowels. Remove the cause,
and be made whole. This can be done effectually
by tbo use of Dr. J. Uostotter’s Stomach Hitlers;
which, if taken as per directions on the bottle, will
remove all flatulency or heaviness from the stom
ach, cure costivenexs, assist digestion, give a good
appetite, and impart a healthy tone to the whole
system. Why not give it a trial all who suffer,
and be relieved At once? and if health to you is
preferable to sickness, continue to use it daily be
fore meals.
