To My Cousin, Mary. If the angels of God were permitted to roam Mid the beautiful flowers of earth; To leave for a season their far distant home, To gladden our hearts and our hearth; 1 would think that the purest, brightest, the best, Had wandered away from its sphere, When 1 ga/.o on my cousin, so happy, so blest, As sinless as bright seraphs are. Thy heart, lovely cousin, knows nothing of guile— The sent of all virtue and truth; And the soft, rosy light of thy sweet, suuuy smile, Is as pure as a dream of thy youth. Thy voice is like music that steals from on high, To gladden us mortals below; [blue eye. And the light that gleams out from thine azure Is as bright as a star in its glow. The fairy-like figure enraptures all hearts That gaze on its outlines of grace, While thy neatness of person forever imparts A charm to thy love-lighted face. I’ve gazed on thee often, and watched thesoft light That ’lumlnos thy beautiful brow, And wondered if God never smilud with delight, On a maiden so perfect as thou. But ’tis not, my cousin, the beauties of form, That make theo the angel thou art; But the holy affections, so constant and warm, That dwell in thy sanctified heart: Thy thoughts are as pure as the star-lighted stream That flows through tho Eden of old; And thy life all as bright as tho first rosy beam That gleams o’er an ocean of gold. Oh, long mayst thou lire to bless the fond sight Os kindred and friends, all so dear; Tochaae, with thy smiles, the shadows that blight, And dash from griefs eyelids the tear. Yet sometimes I’ve feared, as I gazed in thine eye, That shone like the planet of even, That an angel would come from its home in the sky, And hoar my swoet cousin, so Heaven. W. C. CAI'EKS. . A Wise Decision. Judge Closser, of the Probate Court, of Windsor, Vt., has decided that a good family newspaper is one of the necessary articles for the support of a family, dur ing the settlement of an estate, and, as such, the administrator, in insolvent estates, is justifiable in paying for one— the widow to make her own selection of what paper she will have. A Strange Phenomenon. The ship Arctic, which has just arrived at New York, from Liverpool, reports that on Nov. flGth, lat. 51° 46 / , lon. 11° 30 / , a ball of tire struck on the deck, when it burst with a tremendous report, knock ing down the third mate, carpenter and boatswain, also some of the seamen and passengers, but not seriously injuring any one. The New Bedford Standard says:— “Some time since a lady in this city, while dressing for church, thought that she felt something between her dress and skirt; but after shaking them paid no at tention to the circumstance until seated in her pew at church, when out fell a rat upon the floor, much to the consternation of several other ladies in the pew. It commenced running from one end of the pew to the other, and at last was lost sight of—they presuming it had escaped into the aisle- The first named lady, up on arriving home, was in the act of chang ing her dress for another, when, upon shaking it, out fell the rat, having made the trip to church and back in safety. Shocking Casualty. Some week or two ago a lad, a promis ing boy of the name of David, son of Mr. James Sloan, of Clark county, Miss., aged about twelve years, came to his death by accidental shooting in a shock ing manner. He had gone out with a hunting party for deer. lie had been left at a stand alone, and his uncle, who took the nearest stand to him, was pre sently a little surprised at bearing the report of his gun without any indications of game about. He went that way to ascertain the cause, and found only his lifeless corps. It is. supposed that he was standing upon a log with the butt of his gun resting upon it, and by some means it slipped, and the hammer being let down ou the caps, the concussion, when it came in contact with the log, caused it to explode. His neck was shot half away, and a part of the back of his head. Recovery of an Immense Claim. The Baltimore Patriot of Thursday says that Thomas Winans, Esq., of that city, has recovered a claim of five miHions of dollars ngaiust the Russian Government, which makes his share of the proceeds from freight and passenger travel over the rail road of that country, reach the sum of seventeen millions—drafts for which on the banks of Europe have been brought on to him. It appears that, in his contract with Russia, he was to re ceive a certain per centage on all freight and passenger travel, but it was thought by the Government that they were exemp ted from this tsx when applied to the transportation of soldiers to take part in the war in the Crimea. He accordingly engaged the service of John H. B. La trobe, Esq., who went on and recovered the claim by due course of law, and, on account of the many thousand soldiers transported, his proportion was swollen from twelve to seventeen millions. Mr. Latrobe, we understand, received a fee of SIO,OOO a mouth, independent of his ex penses, and upon reaching Baltimore, and announcing the result of the labors, was presented with a check for SIOO,OOO. — The very great wealth and liberality of Mr. Winans, renders him a valued citizen of Baltimore. The Patriot says that he has purchased a tract of land with water front at Canton, where, having received a contract from the Russian Government, he will proceed to the construction of a number of magnificent vessels of war. Mr. Winans is the gentleman who illu minated his residenc in Baltimore, when news was received of some good fortune of the Russians during the Crimean war: and it iB certain that he had good reason to taka interest in the welfare of his friends.
