DAILY SUN. Friday Horning, Feb. 111, 1858. For Apalachicola. The steamer South Carolina, McAllister master, being unable to get off yesterday as intended, will leave to-day at 10 o’cl’k A. M„ for Apalachicola and intermediate landings. _ New Advertisement*. We would call the attention of our grocery merchants to the large sale of New Orleans sugar, to take place at Sa vannah on Monday neat, at auction, by Minis & Johnston. It will be a better i chance to get sugar cheap than to go to New Orleans for it. We would also call attention to the ad vertisements of Mr. G. W. Martin, of Flour and Seed Oats for sale. We would also call attention to the lec ture to be read to-ui'glit before the Young Men’s Christian Association. Mr. Jack son will doubtless interest those who may Jie present on the occasion. The Inferior Court. This body having transacted all the business before them, adjourned on Wed nesday evening until Saturday, when they will again meet for the transaction of County business, and some other busi ness that will come before it them. Arrival Extraordinary. Professor DeGrath, the great Electric Oil man, with his shad-bellied coat, knee breeches, gold buckles, silver buttons and sugar loaf hat, has arrived in our city, and is again stirring up the people to u sense of the marvellous properties and virtues of his incomparable, inapproach able, all-healing, never-failing, sine. qua non, elixervitce, magical, radical, tragical, Electric Oil. We have heard of many wonderful cures of rheumatism, and dis eases of a kindred nature, by this Oil, and we doubt not that there is some vir tue in it, for many diseases of a local character. Condition of the Planter* of Georgia. Editors Savannah Republican :—I have observed several references in the Repub lican, of late, to what you are pleased to designate the solvent and prosperous con dition of the planters of Georgia. The small number of cases reported to have been returned to the Inferior Court of Hancock county, and the high prices which negroes are commanding, you are glad to consider as so many evidences of the healthful condition of the planting interests, and of the country generally Permit me to say, that the cases to which you have from time to time referred, are exceptional cases. In this county—a smaller county than Hancock, and equally as prosperous and solvent—seventy cases were returned to the February term of the Inferior Court —all of which, with two exceptions, were suits for money.— The returns in other counties throughout the State, as far as my information ex tends, will be very heavy. I have heard that a single legal firm will briDg to the Federal Court, at Marietta and Savannah, suits to the amount of $50,000. These latter suits, it is true, are for the most part against merchants ; but if the plan ters would pay the merchants, tho mer chants would be able to pay their credi tors. So, it is the planter, after all, who is in debt, and not the merchant. The reports which have reached you in regard to the prices of negroes, are equal ly wide of the mark. There are but few counties in the State where prime field hands will bring over SI,OOO cash-, and Bimply because the money is not in the country to pay for them. Perhaps a small lot, if sold in any of the cotton pro ducing counties, would bring that figure But what I mean to say is that prime bauds, from 18 to 30 years of age, unless sold under favorable and exceptional circumstances, will not, at Sheriff’s sale, average more than SI,OOO. Twelvo months ago such hands would have readi ly commanded one-fiftli, if notone-fourth more. A boy, twelve years old, brought on the block, in Monroe county, last spring, SBOO. The same boy, at Sheriff’s sale, the first Tuesday in December, sold for $560. The reports which have readi ed you, I presume, were based upon ad ministrator’s sales, where legatees to whom the money was going, came in com petition with each other ; or where there was a credit of twelve months. The planters of Georgia are more in debt than you are aware of. They have ceased to raise their own mules and horses, and hogs, and for some years have looked to Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio for their supplies. In this way many of them have become, to some ex tent, involved in debt. There are but few counties in the State, where, with all the disasters which have attended the cotton crop the past five years, planters can afford to grow cotton at from six to ten cents per pound, and pay from six to eight cents for pork, and from $l3O to $175 for mules. This is the key to the present condition of many of the planters in this State. Upson.
