The growth of the business of Mobile is strikingly illustrated by the following fact, which we find in the Mobile Tri bune: Mobile now ships annually six hun dred thousand bales of cotton. The mer chant who made the first shipment of cotton from that port is now living and engaged in business. The first vessel loaded with cottou he had to send to New Orleans to get four hundred bales to fill up. t Tbe Cuuard Line, A correspondent of tbe N. Y. Journal of Commerce says: It is asserted, and no doubt with truth, that the stock of the Cunard line of ves sels is over two hundred per cent, premium. Very little of it is ever sold. A gentle man of Glasgow last summer offered £3OOO for a share of £IOOO, but could not get it. With their first five ships they have built all their additional eight or nine ships, with the common earnings, without any assessment for additional capital. Stop tbe Villain 1 On the night of the 27tli of December, 1857, a villain by the name of Sebron Bradford, committed a rape upon a little girl eleven years old, living with her pa rents seven miles south of Philadelphia, on the Hillsboro road. The villain took the girl to his home under the pretense of having her stay with his wife while he left home, knowing his wife h*d gone to a to stay that night. After getting the poor girl into his own house, he committed the heinous crime. The said Bradford’s mother resides iu Chambers county, Alabama, and it is supposed that he will attempt to go in that direction. A large reward will be given for his detention in jail, so that he may be brought to this county and re ceive his just punishment. Every person should be on the look-out 1 The last Cir cuit Court of Scott county found two true bills against this same scoundrel for stealing. Description— Sebron Bradford is about 23 years old, 5 feet 8 inches high, stoop shouldered, dish-faced, has a scar on one cheek, freckle-faced, a mean countenance, sandy hair, dirty grey eyes, and weighs about ICO pounds. Any information in relation to his whereabouts addressed to the Post Mas tor at Philadelphia, Neshoba county, Mississippi, will be thankfully received by every citizen of our county. Every newspaper throughout the South would confer a lasting favor by publish ing this awful affair, so that he may not escape justice.— Bulletin. Our Difficulties with Paraguay. On the 9th inst., iu the Senate, a joint resolution was introduced to take meas ures to enforce a settlement of the differ ences with this government and Paraguay. The difficulties between this government and Paraguay were referred to in Presi dent Buchanan’s message at the opening of Congress. The President of Para guay refused to ratify the treaty between tho United States and that State, as amended by the Senate. In 1853 all. S. steamer, the Water Witch, was detailed to ascertain the fitness of the river La Plata and its tributaries for navigation by steam. This enterprise was success fully prosecuted until February, 1855, when in the peaceful prosecution of her voyage up the Parana river, the steamer was fired upon by a Paraguayan fort. The pretext for firing upon the Water Witch was the then existence of a decree issued by the President of Parag >y, in October 1854, prohibiting foreign vessels of war from navigating the rivers of that State. But the Water Witch was not a vessel of war, but a steamer engaged in a scientific enterprise, intended for the ad vantage of commercial States generally. Among other causes of eomplaint against Paraguay, citizens of the United States engaged in business in that country have had their property taken from them and their persons treated in an insulting and arbitrary manner. Hence, the object of the joint resolution above referred to. Hon. Edward Everett’s oration upon the character of Washington coutains a most beautiful figure, introduced in the course of a defence of the great man against the charge that he lacked genius. Remarking that symmetry inconsistent with the great predominance of any sin gle attribute, always marks the higher form of creation, he says: “You might as well complain of the circle that it has no angles or salient points, forgetting that its wonderful perfection consists iu the unbroken curve, every part of which is cqui-distaut from the centre.” Dangers of the Red Petticoat. Three ladies were last week walking on the Newmarket road, two of them exhibit ing tho favorite under garment of the day, when the ire of a passing bulloch was excited by the glaring color, and he made a dash at the party. The offending ladies succeeded in evading him, bnt their com panion, though in a more sombre garb, was lifted upon a gate by the beast, but sustained no injury beyond the fright.— Boiton Boil. planting potatoes. ,1X BARRELS Pink-Eyed Potatoes, the best v'J kind for planting, for sale by Jan. 23.
