daily Huisr. Monday Morning, Feb. 15, 1858. New Advertisement*. As will be seen by the advertisement of Mr. Jefferson, Agent of the City Mills, another reduction in the price of Flour has taken place. If it keeps on declin ing as it has for several days past, it will get down pretty soon to what it ought to bo. See the advertisement of the Dissolu tion of Messrs. Pemberton & Nuckolls, in the Drug business, and the formation of a new firm under the name of J. S. Pem berton &Cos., of which Mr. A. M. Bran nan is a member. See the advertisement of Mr. G. W. Winter, Agent, of Sugar aud paper for sale. “Bats, to your Holes !” ltats, whether biped or quadruped, arc the antipodes of all that is honorable, no ble, or companionable, and no expedient consistent with honor and fair dealing should be left untried to exterminate the whole tribe. If any of our friends should be troubled with the contumacious, thiev ing, undermining, long-tailed species, all they will have to do to rid themselves and the world of the pests, will be to call in the services of the ferrets and dogs of Mr. Dobbins, and the thing wiii be done effectually and at once. It would make John Chinaman smile right out to see with what rapidity they can furnish ma terial for pies to the pig-tail generation of the yentis homo. See advertisement. The Pure Juice, We are indebted to Mr. Daniel Parr for a bottle of his native wine, manufactured from grapes grown upon his place at Summerville, Ala., near this city. For body and flavor it is equal, if not supe rior to the best brands of imported wine, while it is free from all adulterations whatever, being composed of nothing but the juice of the grape and sugar, lienee it is perfectly harmless in its effects upon those in health, while to the feeble it affords a tonic superior to anything of the kind that could be used. It is free from alcohol, save what, is produced by the grape itself, aud hence it is very ap propriately named the “Ladies’ Wine,” and if ladies will drink wine, let them drink this, and there will be no danger of unpleasent results. From this experiment of Mr. Parr, and others of our neighbors, we are satisfied of the fact that if attention was turned to the raising of the grape, and manufac ture of wine, an immense revenue might be derived from it, and instead of the United States being a wine importer, she would become an exporter to an extent almost to defy competition. Experiments have proven tiiat the grape grows ns lux uriautly, and is as free from disease, iu some of the more Southern States, as it is in Italy or France, and we can there fore see no good reason why our people should not turn this fact to account, and at least manufacture enough wine for home consumption, and thus save thous ands and millious of dollars to the coun try, which are spent annually for foreign wines, which, at best, are generally adul terated with some poisonous drug, caus ing disease and death to those who use it. Mr. Parr cultivates the Warrenton grape, which is said to be one of the best varities for making wine. He informs us that he manures his vines very highly at the roots, and then covers the space be tween the vines with pine straw, to the depth of some eight or ten inches, which, with the necessary trimming and prun ing, is all the cultivation they need. The straw protects the roots from the heat of the sun in the summer, and keeps the ground moist, and iu tho winter it pro tects them from the cold. Those in want of this excellent wine, will find it at the Drug Store of J. S. Pemberton & Cos. Col. Wade Hampton. The sad intelligence of the decease of this widely known and esteemed citizen, reached our city iu a private dispatch from tho West, lie expired suddenly on the 10th inst., at one of his plantations in Louisiana. Col. Wade Hampton was well and widely known throughout the South and beyond as a gentleman and citizen of un tiring public spirit, gallant demeanor, and high toned courtesy and hospitality —in all points a noble representative of the best old school and class of Carolina planters. At the memorable defence of New Orleans, in December. 1814, and on the Bth January, 1815, he acted as a confidential and- well approved aid-de camp for General Jackson, and, with our esteemed fellow-citizen, Col. A. P. llayuc, shared largely tho confidence aud closest regards of that sagacious chieftain, whose intrusive judgment of men was one of his most remarkable traits. Few men above tlie desire of station and office have been so widely known as Col. Hampton, aud the sad intelligence we now publish will be received with a wide spread sorrow, suclfas perhaps could not be created by the death of any other private citizen. The intelligence reached us at too late au hour to permit us to give auy details or particulars of Col. Hampton’s life, which, we suppose, had reached its sixty fifth year. His remains are on the route for Co lumbia, 8. C-, in charge of his son.— Charleston Courier. Tlie Dromedary Experiment. The Galveston News states that the camels and dromedaries imported by the Government some years ago iuto that State Itr the purpose of trying the ex periment how they would answer the purpose ou our great American deserts or in the extreme west of the State have proven eminently successful, and come up to the full expectations of all. At last accounts they were on ther journey, heavily laden, to the extreme frontier of New Mexico. All are now satisfied that the importation of camels was no chi merical flight, as was anticipated, but a wise, judicious, and economical scheme, reflecting credit on the originators of the plan. There are now employed nineteen dromedaries and thirty-two camels on the frontier. The climate agrees with them admirably, aud but few accidents by dis ease or otherwise have occurred. COMMEKCIAL.
