J’he Key West correspondents of the Savannah Georgian announce the escapo from that place of fourteen slaves, con sisting of men, women aud children.— They escaped in a boat, and will most probably bo picked up at sea, unless they should happen to make Nassau, which is not unfrequeutly done by fugitive slavos from Florida. Disunion, The Washington correspondent of the New York Times (abolition) telegraphs the following to that paper; Clay says he only expects to make one more speech iu the Senate, as disunion is at hand. The plan is, on the rejection of Kansas, for the delegations of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Missis sippi to vacate their seats and go home. It is supposed that those States will at ouce call a convention for a dissolution of the Union, and it is hoped that Texas, Louisiana and North Carolina will follow suit. Strange to say, South Carolina is the most conservative of all these. Their former trial at Nullification makes them cautious. Success of Southern Manufactur ing Kstalillsliments. Mr. J. L. Rogers, in a communication to the National American, says: “ That in Georgia, the Roswell Company has been very successful, paying regulary from ten to fourteen per cent, dividends, and ex tending their works. There are a num ber of establishments in N. Alabama and Western Tennessee that have been paying large profils from the manufacture of various kinds of plaids, checks, tickings, eto., which commands in the markets where they sell, a higher price than those from any other factory. All their opera tives are negroes, owned by the company. Their establishment is now worth some four hundred thousand dollars. Martin, Weakly & Co.’s, near Florence, Alabama, have succeeded equally ns well. They commenced about ten years ago with one small factory ; in a few years they built a second, larger than the first, and during the past summer have completed a third and very extensive one.” , * —— The Right Talk. A straight-out writer gives the follow ing advice to those young men who “de pend oibfather” for their support, and take no interest whatever in business, but are regular drones in the hive, subsisting on that which is earned by others: “Come, off with your coats, clench The saw, the plow handles, the axe. the pick axe, spade—anything that will enable you to stir your blood! Fly around and tear your jacket, rather than he passive recipients of the old mau’s bounty!— .Sooner than play the dandy at dad’s ex pense, hire yourself out to some potatoe patch—let yeurself to stop hog holes or watch the bars; and when you think yourself entitled to a resting spell, do it on your own hook. Get up in the morn iug—help the old gentleman; turn round at least twice before breakfast; give him now and then a generous lift in business; learn how to take the lead, and not de pend fqrevor qu beiqg led ; aqd yqq havo no idea how the discipline w'4 benefit you. Do this, and qur word for it, you wjll seem to hl'eathe anew atmosphere, possess anew frame, tread anew earth, wake to anew destiny; andyou may then begin to aspire to manhood. Take off, then, that ring from your little finger, break your cane, shave your upper lip, wipe your nose, hold up your head, and by no means never again eat the bread of idleness nor depend on father. Nw amt Then. tq lfs6o, California applied fPf admis sion iuto tho Union. It’ was insisted— and correctly, no doubt —that her appli cation was irregular ; that her Constitu tion was uot adopted by a majority of all her citizens ; and that she was forced in to the Uqion by tlje interfevenob of the Uieq President of the United States. Mr. Thomas L. Harris, of Illinois, warmly advocated her admission. Addressing the House upon tho subject, he said ; “Mr. Chairman : I am for the admis sion of California as a Stnte into this Union—California as she is, with her Constitution end proposed boundaries. I wish her to be admitted now; I wish no rentandiny —a thing that never was done at all, and never ouyht to be done, in such a case as this. * * * It is objected to the admission of California, tl;at the I’feqjdeqt ljas improperly inter fered in i(s organization, and that with out his interference through a certain gentleman, late a member of this House, slip never would have applied for admis* aiou in the manner she has, and wi'h suoh a Constitution as she has present ed” Kansas is now asking admission into the Union. She comes to us with a Con stitution repiihliom in its character, framed by a convention legally assem bled for that purpose, and ratified by a majority of the people for whom it was framed. Mr. Harris opposes this Consti tution, and resists the admission of Kan sas under it. He thinks her Constitution ought to be remanded —“a thing,” accord ing to his notions in 1850, “that never was done nt all, and never ought to be dune in such a case.” We leave to Mr. Harris the task of ro cunciling bis past with his present posi tion on this subject.— Washington Lilian, Feb. 10.
