Counterfeits.
We learn from the Sparta Central Geor
gian, that counterfeit ijtoO bills on the
Georgia Kail Hoad and Banking Compa
ny, have recently been in circulation iu
that community. The Georgian says
they are the poorest attempt intliat line
it has ever seen, and are evidently the
poduction of a tyro. They were origi
nally One Dollar hills, and Lave been
changed into Fifties. The public should
he on the alert, not only to protect them
selves, but to iletect any person who may
be guilty of such nefarious practices, and
have them sent to the penitentiary, where
such fellows properly belong.
The Smoking Car.
The ediior of the llollidaysburg Stand
ard, out of curiosity, visited one of the
new smoking cars on the Ceutral Road,
and thus describes his “sensation:”
Upon opening the door, we were as
saulted by a stench which threw onions
and garlic, and skunk, far in the shade.
Our nasal organ was saluted simultane
ously with ‘havaua,’ and ‘cent a-grab,’
‘regalia’ and ‘toby,’ ‘yaro’ and ‘cabbage
leaf,’ ‘Spanish’ and ‘half-Spanish,’—all
most delightfully and beautifully blended
in one grand stink. Either by the force
of the stench, or the muscles of our arm,
the door closed, and we made tracks, with
both hands upon our stomach, which was
loudly calling for a bucket. Up to the
present time, we are barely able to smoke
our Principe, and we feel certain that one
or two more applications of the smoking
car would effectually and forever cure our
love for the weed.”
Haw to Prevent Colds.
A bad cold, like measles, or mumps, or
any other similar ailment, will run its
course of about ten days, in spite of what
may be done for it, unless remedial means
are employed within forty-eight hours of
its inception. Many a useful life may be
spared, to be increasingly useful, by cut
ting a cold off in the following safe but
simple manner : On the first day of tak
ing cold, there is a very unpleasant sen
sation of chillness. The momentyou ob
serve this, go to your room, and stay
there. Keep it at such a temperature as
it will entirely prevent this chilly feeling,
even if it requires one hundred degrees
of Fahrenheit.
In addition to this, put your feet in
water half-leg deep, as hot as you can
bear it, adding hot water from time to
time for a quarter of an hour, so that the
water shall be hotter when you take your
feet out than when you put them in.—
Then dry them thoroughly, and put on
thick woolen stockings, even if it be sum
mer—for summer colds are more danger
ous—and for twenty-four hours eat not
an atom of food, but drink as largely as
you desire of any kind of warm tea, and
at the end of that time the cold will be
entirely broken without any medicine
whatever. Efficient as the above means
are, not one iu a thousand attends to
them, led on as most men are by the
hope that a cold will pass away itself.—
Nevertheless, this article will now and
then pass under the eye of a wise man,
who does not choose to run the double
risk of taking physic and dying too. —
Medical Journal.
Let those who are often afHicted with
colds—ministers, students, consumptives
generally, cut out the above directions
and preserve them ; if faithfully followed
they will do you more good than all the
pulmonaries, cold cordials, and other
hurtful nostrums, which now load your
shelves.
In a recent discussion before the Lon
don Society of Arts, Mr. C. W. Williams,
the well known engineer, exhibited a
drawing of the boilers of the Leviathan
steamship, and took occasion to say that
they presented the greatest violation of
natural aud chemical laws that he bad
ever witnessed, 110 ridiculed the idea of
th#ir burning coal in the furnaces, with
out great waste of fuel or an enormous
evolution of smoke. Each boiler—double
boiler—of the Leviathan, contains twelve
furnaces aud about four hundred thous
and cubic feet of atmospheric air per
hour are required for proper combustion
of the gasees alo-e ; but in what manner
the air is to get into the furnaces does
not appear. Mr. Williams remarked that
it really seemed as if the utmost pains
had been taken to exclude the air—it be
ing as impossible for the air to be sup
plied through the fuel in the grate as for
a man to breathe the air which comes
from the lungs of another person. It is
an ascertained fact in chemistry, that a
ton of coal, producing ten thousand cubic
feet of gas, requires one hundred thous
and cubic feet of air for thorough com
bustion ; and by some it is estimated ut
even double that quantity.
Serious Affray.
An unfortunate collision occurred iu
our city on Tuesday last, between Major
Ellis and his son James Ellis on the one
side, and James T. lloleinanon the other,
in which all of the parties were seriously
injured. It sehms that Iloleman first
struck young Ellis in the face, aud stab
bed him in the chest with a large pocket
knife ; about this time they were sepera
ted, but soon after Iloleman assailed the
elder Ellis with the same knife ; where
upon a regular cut and thrust fight en
sued, in which those three participated,
aud continued until Iloleman was cut or
struck down. The elder Ellis, we are
informed, has some five or Bix cuts, none
of which, however, are considered dan
gerous. Voting Ellis and Iloleman are
both badly injured, and their recovery is
doubtful. The parties all live in the
country, and are the victims of intemper
ance.—Sumter Republican, !>th inti.
