&|f faily Wcdncidajr Morning, Mnrcli 10,’5H. It is said that the Roman Catholic Itish o]>n of fliiadelphia, l’ittsburg, Erie, Richmond, Wheeling, Charleston, .Savan nah, and the Vicar of Florida, havo been ordered by the Most Uov. Archbishop of ISaltimore, to assemble in the city of Baltimore on Sunday, May 2d, for the purpose of deliberating upon matters of interest to the Church at large. Tho statistics show a large falling off in tho shipments of railroad iron from Croat Britain to the United States in tho last three months of 1867, ns compared with those of IHofi. Tho total for Octo-, her, November and December last year, amounted to 21,479 tons, while in the same months of 1H67 the aggregate is on ly 1,199 tons, a deficiency of 17,070 tons. In November last the shipment was only 794 tons, but increased to 1,116 tons in December. l)oicat ic Coiittuinptloii of Cotton. All readers know that there has been a very large decrease in the consumption of cotton in tho United States this year and the latter part of the last. The Economist gives us the figures, which we had nut previously observed. Up to the 17th of February, 1867, thero had been consumed or taken for consumption, since the Ist, of September provious, •191,6:17 bales, valued at $22,642,000; while up to the 17th of February, 1868, there had been taken but 99,882 hales, valued at $4,746,000. It is observable, however, that latterly the increase in consumption is regularly augmenting for instance : 1857. 1858. February :i 15,130 7,138 “ 10 14,019 14,165 “ 17 34,930 17,204 The Economist lias no doubt this will will continue ; for in a very few months money will lie more abundant than has ever been known, and it will be difficult to iind a profitable investment for it.— Already the Bank of England has re duced her rate of interest to .8 per cent. -lower than has been known for many years ; and there never was known in the United States such an enormous accumu lation of specie in our banks. Tho pro bability and fear is that we shall rapidly vibrate from one extreme to the other, and that the late panic will be succeeded by an expansion and speculation as senseless and improvident as any here tofore witnessed in the country. In this fast age we learn but little by experience, in our country at least, and wc hardly shake from us tho dust and rubbish of the insecure fabric of former reckless speculations that has come tumbling about our cars, before we arc busily en gaged in erecting others quite as insecure and unstable. Ter it tile Murder ly lloy n. A terrible affair occurred at Littleton Station, on the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road, on Sunday night, tlio 21st of Feb ruary. Mrs. Manly, a widow, resided there with her two sons, and kept a grocery.— An improper intimacy between her and a man in the neighborhood had been sus pected. On Sunday the boys went away from home to be gono all night, but hap pened to return unexpectedly in tho night and found this mail in bed with their mother. Enraged, they fell upon him and killed him The hoys escaped, one on an eastern train and the other one coming west. One was 10, tho other 16 years old. The miserable victim must liavo died instantly, as ho was stabbed three times through the heart. KAlt AN 1 > EVE. DUS. LEBRUN & DUFTON, OCUI.ISTS AND AITKISTS. i\!t.
