Thursday Morning, March 45, *5 8. Ou Thursday morning at 4 o’clock the extensive cannon foundry of Knapp & Wade, at Pittsburg, Va., was entirely de stroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at §IOO,OOO, on which there is $0,900 insurance iu each of tho following offices: Delaware Mutual and Franklin, Philadel phia; Home, New York; Citizens and Western, Pittsburg; aud 3,000 in the lleliance, Philadelphia. The fire is sup posed to have been the work of an incen diary. We learn from the Daton Kongo Comet, that on Wednesday night tho 10th inst., Professor Wells made his third and, prob ably, last trip iu a balloon inflated ouly with heated air. The balloon ascended the height of about five hundred feet and floated over the city. The rarified air was presently exhausted, causing the bal loon to descend precipitately. The fall of the Professor was somewhat broken hy the limb of n tree, lie was seriously injured, and had lie not been speedily rescued, would soon have been burned to death, enveloped as he was in the gear and canvass of his machine, which had taken fire. A Sensible Woman. A lady of our acquaintance, who, in addition toother excellencies, says the lloston Journal, has the great and uncom mon merit of sincerity, recently received tin invitation to a fashionable party, to whjch.she returned the following reply. We recomuied it to others who lack the sincerity and couruge to decline such in vitations : Boston, Jan. 20, 1858. My Dear Mrs. T. —My husband aud I are tired of evening parties and morning head aches. I must be honest. Jane and Mary Ann it is “a horrid bore,” but they will “accept with pleas ure.” lam sorry that they feel obliged to resort to such hypocrisy. Besides, you know you don't want us. You only think you must make a party because you have been invited to others to which you did not want to go. When it is over, you and your guests will rejoice ecjunlly. Allow me to make a suggestion. Why not confer a favor upon yourself and them, aud upon those who would appre ciate the kindness, by giving up the par ty, and hy investing tho money intended for wine, oysters and low necked dresses, iu solid nourishment for those to whom a biscuit would boa luxury, aud whose bare shoulders would no longer shiver were they covered with comfortable shawls? On Saturday last Robert Schmidt, of Theresa, in Dodge county, shot down, in the street of that place, Harriet Seidler, a young lady about twenty years of age. The parties were engaged to be married about one year ago, and Schmidt had come over from St. I‘nul, where he lias resided about a year to fulfill the engage ment, but the parents of the young lady objected to the marriage, in consequence of which it was arrauged between the lovers that Schmidt Hhould first shoot tho young lady and then shoot himself. He executed his design, so far as the young lady was concerned, but failed to shoot himself on account of the loss of the cap on his gun. After failing in this, lie ran and threw himself into the river with the intention to drown himself, but was res cued by persons who saw him. Hu is now arrested and awaits a trial. Thu charge (which was of fine shot,) entered the left breast of the young lady and in flicted a horrible wound, of which she expired on Sunday morning, about two o’clock. She hud her senses up to tho last, and charged her parents with beiug responsible for the awful deed, and ac quitted her lover of all blame. The par ties, as their names indicate, were Ger mans.—Milwaukie Nturt, 16!A i nil. Grape Cutting*. Have you a choice grape cutting that you want to grow ?
