January 26,1868. failg |jiw. Friday Morning;, March 26, 1858. Murder by a Negro. l.ate last Thursday night a most atro cious murder was committed on Topsail Sound, near Wilmington, N. C., by a ne gro fellow named l’eter, belouging to Owen Holmes, Esq. It seems that Peter had been runaway from Mr. Holmes’ plantation, and Mr. Charles H. Nixon, Mr. ll.’B overseer, went in pursuit of him, nnd had succeeded in coming up with the fugitive, when the negro turned upon him and shot him. The negro shot once and missed him, when Nixon pre sented his gun, which snapped, and the second fire from the negro killed him. The Sheriff, with a posse, had started in pursuit of tho negro, and indignation was very great. The Herald, from which we gather the facts, hoped that the law would be permitted to take its course. New York Dry t.oodii Market. New Youk, March It).—We are enabled to report n firmer market for dry goods this week, with some slight advanco on a number of articles. This is not done, however, to any large demand from the country or from consumers. The jobbers appear to have been stimulated by the representations of manufacturers that the lapse in production of goods during the past season, both hero and abroad, would soon become apparent in reduced stocks and a scarcity of many fabrics, while the decreased importation, as compared with that of last year, is a market fact in cor roboration. Thus goods are bought with increased confidence, and at slightly aug mented prices, scarcely justified by the prospects for a resale of tho merchan dise. German llroudcloths under-two dollars per yard appear to have boeu taken free ly, aud cannot now be bought as favora bly as some parcels wore sold early in the month. Doeskins continue to be abundant, and we cannot as yet trace any actual ad vance. Drillings of linen and cotton, adapted to clothiers’ trade, although the demand continues very limited, have recovered a little, simply from the fact that importers prefer to carry them over rathor than submit to the prices obtained at auction in February. Yorkshire stuffs are quiet, and price* remain quite regular : the heavy holders judiciously avoid pressing the article upon tho market faster than called out for consumption. Lawns and Ginghams arc flat. Printed Brilliants aud Fancy Woven Dress Goods are in fair demand. The value of dry goods entered at the port this week is but $1142,412, and the whole import since Ist January is much less than half of what was entered last year in tlie same time, although the value of goods put upon the market continues to be augmented by the withdrawals from warehouse. The sales ut auction this woek have been heavy, and hotter supported than was anticipated by either buyer* or sel lers. Much the largest proportion of the offerings arc French goods. On Wednes day and Thursday there were disposed of by one house nearly fifteen hundred lots. Many of tlie goods were of a costly de scription. French printed cottons, with the exception of Lawns and Jaconets, sold well. Printed worstod and silk fa brics did well also ; a few, indeed, sold extravagantly high. Plain Muslin De laines, Bareges, Challis, Crepes, etc., did uot bring near tho private sale prices ; still they were not sacrificed. Fine silk robes sold nt a heavy loss. Messrs. Hag gerty & Cos. yesterday had a large cata logue of rich upholstery goods, which went off with considcroble spirit, Worst ed plushes improved a little, ltich and costly silk brocades sold low, but they were old goods. Messrs. Wilmerding, Hoguet & Hum bert sold to-day 10,000 shawls, whioh brought fnir prices; quite a number of lots were duplicated. Messrs. Van Wyck, Townsend & War rons offered to-day a very large line of French tissues, worsted and silk goods already noticed, the prices drooped a little, but not materially. As the large retail houses from neigh boring cities and those of New York are competing at these sales with the jobbing trade, the quantities disposed of exceed all reasonable calculations. American cottons fully maintained the advantage conceded tu manufacturers which we referred to last week. Brown .Sheetings aro hold firmly at cents, and Drillings a 9 cents for 40-yard lengths. Some parties aro still selling the short lengths at Bjf cents. Goods of the bnwrence, Boott, Stark, Suffolk, Ap pleton, Pepperil, and other mills, are now sold ahead of production. Some fino .‘SO - goods are reported as sold for print ing ut G cents. Bleached goods aro rathor firmer aud stocks are getting smaller daily. Fine Cassimcres are active at full pri ces. Medium goods are doing a little better. Black goods are dull, especially for Doeskins. Satinets also are dull.— The market is getting hare of low Ken tucky Jeans, and advanced prices are asked for all qualities under 22 cents. The Revival in Tennessee. A correspondent of the Alabama State Sentinel, writes from— Leuakoh, Tenn., March 7, 1868. 1 this morning witnessed two of the most interesting spectacles that it has ever been my good fortuuo to behold, and I hasten to record some of the pleasant impressions, now so fresh in my memory. A meeting at the Methodist Church was held this morning immediately after the adjournment of the Sabbath school, for the sole purpose of receiving new mom hers. As soon as the announcement was made by the minister that applicants were invited to come forward, twenty-one youthful converts —all members of the Cumberland University, located at this place—togethor with a few others, (citi zens of the place,) presented themselvos, and were duly received as members of the church. The company being dismissed, L repaired to the Cumberland Presbyte rian Church, whore I witnessed a repeti tion of the same solemn and interesting ceremony. The number of students was ns large on this occasion as on the former; this class constituting in each case about five-sixths of the whole number. I sup pose an equally large number will join the Baptist Church as soon as an oppor tunity is presented. This happy result has been brought about by tho unitod efforts of Christians of all denominations. Two religious re vivals have been going on here several weeks, aud are still continued with in creanod interest. 1 suppose the number of converts cannot bo less than sixty-five. (NO. -204.
