DAILY SUN. Monday Morning, April 5, 1838. Tlie Opera. On Saturday night Donizetti’s beauti ful Opera, “The Daughter of the Regi ment,” was most admirably rcmlerod by the New Orleans English Opera Company, it being the first night of their second en gagement in this city. Quito a select audience was present, though not as full as on some of the nights of their former engagement. The whole Company appeared to bo in line voice aud most amiable mood, and the audience were highly delighted. Miss Hudson, as Tonio, acquitted her self with more than usual credit, and either because she was more in the vein, or because she has studied to overcome the only defect we have ever detected in her rendition of any character we have seen her attempt, she exhibited more life, vivacity and feeling than we have be fore witnessed in her acting. The song, “That l might Vie near her,” was the at traction of the evening, and she grace fully yielded to enthusiastic encores, aud repeated it with increased effect, and beauty. Miss Durand, as Mario, was herself, which is about as high a meed of praise as could well be bestowed upon her. The character of Marie is well adapted to her style, and affords a tine opportunity for the display of her extraordinary volume and sweetness of voice. The “Singing Lesson” was most brilliantly rendered, and the song “France, 1 adore time” brought down the house. Her affection and attachment for the friends of her youth, after she had been restored to her birth-right and to affluance, was very af fecting, and was most truthfully and nat urally performed. In fact the forte of Miss Durand’s acting is its naturalness. The enthusiastic applause wljieli greeted Imr every appearance upon the stage evinced very clearly the high apprecia tion in which she is held by a Columbus audience. Miss King personated the Marchioness with a great deal of truthfulness and ef fect, and won greatly upon the favor of her auditory. She was evidently in bet ter voice than when with us before, and sang the song, “These terrible French,” with much beauty and finish of tone. Sulpice, as represented by Mr. F. Lys ter, was an admirable piece of acting— Sulpice himself could not have done it batter, lie was in excellent voice, andiu the duet with Marie, “In Life’s Early Morn,” he gave us the full force and beauty of his splendid Baritone voice. The Orchestra and Chorus were unex ceptionable, and the important office of Mr. Reiff, the Musical Director, is begin ning to be appreciated by the audience, as well as the manner in which ho fills it. The greatest improvement we noticed was the increased effect upon the beauty of the performance and the comfort of tlm audience, resulting from the raising of scats. It is now one of the most com fortable and convenient Halls in any in land city in the State. *. New Advertisements. Never before have we seen such fine and tasty goods as are being brought out by our merchants this Spring. The cry of “hard times” which has been ringing in our cars since last Fall, had led us to infer that the stocks of goods brought out by our merchants this Spring would bo quite limited, and of the cheaper quali ties, but in this we were “counting with out our host,” for the “flush times” never witnessed such a rich display of goods as now adorn the shelves and counters of our merchants. On Saturday we stepped into the store of Messrs Rothschild k 15r0., and there we saw “piles upon piles” of goods upon their counters, of the most gorgeous, and delicate colors, and of the finest aud richest fabrics. If our lady readers wish to feast, their eyes on beau tiful goods, and get rid of their spare change on advantageous terms, let them call in at the Messrs. Rothschilds, and they can be gratified. See their adver tisement. Hood clothes and a motalio countenance will put anybody through the world utau easy going pace. And speaking about good clothes, reminds us that Messrs. Rosette, Melick & Cos., can supply the clothing to the gentlemen with the me talic countenances, provided they have a corresponding amount of metal of the right kind in their pockets. See adver tisement. Mr. Joseph Jefferson, Agent for the City Mills, appreciating tho hardness of the times aud the scarcity of money, has made a still further reduction in tho price of flour, and is now selling it at prices which will put biscuit within the reach of a purse of the most contracted dimen sions. Tho choir will please sing “the good time coming.” See advertisement. Fishing is a pleasant amusement when you have a good hook and line, aud the fish bite pretty freely. Those fond of the sport can find some excellent tackle at the Drug Store of R. A. Ware & Son. Seo advertisement. I.OST! LOST!!
