COLTJMBTTS: LiRQBST CITY CIRCLEATION. Kondy Korklnf, April iift, IM3H. Sec reading matter on every page. Struck toy Llghlnlng. Wo understand that on Friday last, during the thunder storm that occurred on that day, the lightning struck the ro sidcnce of Mrs. Judge Lewis, residing in Alabama about throe miles from town, tearing off the shingles and splitting the raftors. What was strange about it was, the house had a lightning-rod upon it. Fortunately no one wns hurt. The Augusta Constitutionalist aunoun- ] ces the death of Edward (Jarlick, Esq., a ; useful and popular citizen of llurkc coun ty, and for the lust twenty-five years I clerk of the Superior and Inferior Courts of ISurko, and at the time of his death, j Ordinary of the county. 11 o was sixty ! years of ago. llis death was caused by hemorrhage of the lungs. The Mississippian announces the death of the lion. Win. K. Cannon, of Lowndes I county, on the 16thinstant. Mi. Cannon was a native of youth Carolina, lie has i been a member of the Mississippi Legis lature, and at the last Democratic Slate Convention his friends pressed his namo for the Gubernatorial nomination, and lie came within a single vote of receiving it. ♦ According to the returns of the county assessors of Illinois to the Stale auditor, the aggregate value of real mid personal property in that commonwealth (omitting several of the counties not yet received) amounts to $ 408,477,367, being an in crease of $72,2127,210 over the total of the year 1850, or twenty-two per cent, difference in two years. ♦ The Utah Command. If the Washington dispatches are reli able, the command of the Utah Army lias been finally assigned to tien. Smith. This will doubtless be satisfactory to the other officers, ns his rank is that of Major-Gen eral, while Generals Harney and John ston rank only as lirigadier-Generals.— Gen. Smith is highly qualified, by milita ry and civil qualifications, for so impor tant and dclicato a command, - ♦ lloth houses of the Virginia Legislature passed a bill, at the recent session, pro viding for the employment, at the discre tion of the Governor, of free negro con victs in the Penitentiary, on the public works, aud to make the same disposition of slaves sentenced to transportation. This will relieve the States south of Vir ginia from tno salo into their limits of slaves convicted of felony. IJ nnd uH e rated Patriot loin. Tho Legislature of New York adjourn ed ou the 17tli iust., after a laborious session of one hundred nnd four days.— The pier diem of the members is limited to one hundred days, and of course the expenses of the four extra days have to ho footed out of the privato funds of the members. Such disinterested patriotism is rarely met with in Legislative bodies, aud we opine there was a wheel within a wheel, which held tho body together be yond its constitutional limit. It is announced that ISrigham Young declares his determination, if matters come to tho worst, to burn down St. Louis, Keokuk, Chicago, New York, and Washington. Wo are surprised that he says nothing about burning Louisville.— Louisville Juuntul. Nothing nt all surprising about it to an outsider, Brigham doubtless considers Louisville ns bad a placo us Salt Lake, and has stroug hopes of having it annex ed to liis dominions, and peradventure will move his hcnd-quartors tlicro when he wliipis Uncle Sam into subjection. - - • Tho Temperance Crusader learns that a young man, calling himself Wilcox, a student in the school of the ltev. J. W. Reid, at Philomath, died a few days since, and upou his death bed confessed that he had been misrepresenting his real name, because ho said that ho had com mitted murder in Louisiana, and lmd fled from home. He had been sout to Georgia by his parents, with money and isstruc tions to have him sent to a good school. He requested Mr. Reid to write to his friends in Louisiana and tell them of his death. Oov. Hobln.on on Kansas. Mr. C. Robinson, the Topeka Governor of Kansas, now in Washington, lias writ ten a letter showing must clearly ltii pre ference for the admission of Kansas under the Leoompton constitution, rather than no admission at all the present session. He says in the conclusion of his loiter: ‘‘lndeed, were there no question as to who would receive the certificates of elec tion, lam not ccrtiin hut Kansas would he the gamer by being admitted under any con ceivable constitution , if the agitation could thus he aided, rather than to bo leftiucou fusion w.th three State constitutions aud governments, besides tho Territorial gov ernment for another year. Kansas has had her share of political agitations, and tier impoverished citizens are anxious for a return of honorable peace uud piros perity.” Gone to Give them Another Trial. It is stated that Mr. Ten llru-ck, the Napoleon of the American Turf, sailed from New York for England ou Tuesday lust, for the purpioso of testing tho spieed of the English horses, with his hitherto iuvincible Charleston. John Hull had better look well to his laurels, and also to bis purse strings, else Mr. Ten llm-ck will pluck tlio one aud unloose the other, for we are satisfied that with nn open field and a fair coutest, Charleston will be a match for the fleetest horse upon the English turf. Though no great advo cate for the sports of the turf, we never theless wish Mr. Ten brack may suc oeod beyond even his most sanguine ex pectations. We bavo the biggest rivers, the largest railroads, the tallest moun tains, the bravest men, tho prettiest \vo meu, the fattest babies, aud we seo no good reason why vro should not also have the fastest horses. Tile Crop*—The Kroll. We have just returned from nn excur sion down the Chattahoochee river, in j the course of which we traveled some by land through the counties of * lay and - Ga., and Harbour and Russell, j Ala. We found the corn crop looking well, apparently good stands, aud from four inches to near kneo high. Wheat! is in bead and looking well, though we hoard some complaint of rust. Cotton is up to a good stand aud looking well. Tlio j surface planted, from the best informs- | lion we could gather from conversation | with planters, is about the same as last year. In the afternoon of Friday, there was a J slight blow from tho northwest accompa nied by a shower of cold rain of about | fifteen minutes duration ; and after about : two hours of cold misty rain, the clouds | pmied off. Overcoats were necessary for comfort the remainder of the evening and night, and where we were at daylight Saturday morning, (about 25 miles lrom Columbus, in Russell county,) light frost ! was to be seen on tlio fences. The frost was not heavy enough, however, to do I material damage to vegetation because | of the warmth the land had obtained from j tlio sunny weather which immediately preceded it. The temperature of the atmosphere moderated ou Saturday and no signs of frost were perceptible in this vioiuity Sunday morning If serious damage was done to cotton by Saturday morning's frost, it was con fined to localities where mure or less hail fell on Friday eveniug. As yet we have no positive information. Wo would caution cotton operators to receive the reports going over the wires of the frost damage, with considerable allowance. We give them no credit. From tlio Savannah Republican. Svvun'a Lottery. Editor Republican : Having noticed tlio article in your issue of the 21st, copied from the Columbus Sun, I request that you insert the following affidavit, and obligo yours, respectfully, J. J. IIIiSMUt. Savannah, Ga., April 23, 1858. 1, the undersigned, agent iu this city for Messrs. Sam. Swan <St Cos., of Augusta, Ga., do hereby certify that 1 was present in my office April Gtli, and saw the cash ier of Messrs. Swan & Cos. pay to a gen tleman of this city the money due on his prize ticket, Nos. 0, 19, 28, Class <157, which was drawn in Augusta, Saturday, April 2<l, and which combination drew the capital prize of $50,000. And 1 also certify that the gentleman purchased the ticket in my cdlicc, and that he requested his name should not be made public. J. J. Helskr, Agent, Savannah, Ga. Sworn to before me, R. Wayne, Mayor. The Columbus Sun is requested to no tice this. J. J. 11. Os course we’ll notice it. Hut we are sorry that that fortunate individual who drew that $50,000 is so extremely modest that lie does not wish his name known, llow intieh more satisfactory it would ho to the public if his mime could be known, and the fact established beyond contro versy that lie is not a myth. As this gentleman is so modest in the matter, wo tiro fearful that somebody in Savannah has been dabbling in lotteries who ought not to liavo done so. +. Correspondence of tike Dully Mini. MonTVAI.E SfltlNUS, lilount Cos., Teim., April 18. j Eds. Sun: I arrived here on the even ing of the Gil instant, and have been gradually improving up to the present time. 1 am not thoroughly cured, but feel so much better that I am positively satisfied 1 will speedily and effectually gain my health. The water of this spring has acted like a charm upon me. 1 was scarcely able to walk or sit up when 1 arrived here, aud now I can take an ex cursion for miles into the country on foot, not only without fatigue but with zest aud relish. My cure, or rather couvalcscense, thus far, is truly surprising to uie. Hu: there are, and have been others, whose restora tion to health is mueh more marvellous. For instance, we have had a patient up to last week, who had been troubled with chronic diarrhea of many year’s standing, who has been restored to health and use fulness by those springs. It would be impossible to enumerate the number of cases of jaundice, dropsy, dyspepsia, liver complaint, rheumatism and neuralgia, that have bceu perma nently and thoroughly cured here. One ease of neuralgia (a recent one,) was ef fectually subdued in seven days. 1 wonder much that these springs are so little known throughout the country. Hut they liavo never, until the present, been in the hands of a man of energy— one capable of consulting the public good uud his own immediate weal, by tho con struotiou of a suitable edifice, and by satisfactorily catering to the wants and wishes of visitors and guests. Thegrounds are now being improved nnd beautified in a tasteful and imposing manner, and, ere the warm weather sets in, and with it the flow of visitors, in quest of health and pleasure, they will present an aspect of rare beauty and loveliness. My own individual suffering from neu ralgia, within the past thirteen months, has been such that 1 can truly sympa thize with those similarly afflicted* Ac tuated by this fooling, and by a desire to benefit my afflicted fellow beings, 1 hum bly request you, to whom my sufferings ore known, to give this epistle a place in your valuable paper, Ry so doing you will render a service to tho community at large, aud obligo LYKEL. ♦ --~— Tile Tilings we are lliiylng. Just meet an apparently good looking man, for instance, in the street; you admire his features, whiskers and gem ral bearing; but 10l he lifts Lib hat in recog nition of your how, and the charm bus vanished, for Irliabod is wiitten ou his bald head, and the glory has departed with tho flowing locks that once flourished luxuriantly there. In the case of a holy, the matter is, if possible, worse—such cases reminding one of the circumstance on which tho following epigram is founded: “0! give mo, fair Km mu, a lock of your hair,” A bashful young lover took courage and sighed : ‘•’Twas a sin to refuse such a modest request— So take the whole wig” the dear creature replied. Now', to prevent such a catastrophe, is within the power of every lady and gentleman; for by using Prof. Wood’s Hair Rostorutive, hair is not only prevented from fulling off or turning gray, hut the article will r store hair to bald places, and even if it lias changed color and become gray, it will bring it hack to its pristine beauty and luxu riance. Those who arc acquainted with the anato my, physiology and pathology of the hair, must bo well aware that certain substances have specific action upon it and it is by a judicious combination of these that Prof. Wood has succeeded in com pounding a mixture possessed of remarkable vir tues. — Waverly Magazine and Literary Gazette. All such engaged, should be shunned hy all that value their health, for it is evident that those who would prostitute themselves to one base action, would not hesitate in others. We would also earnestly caution you to examine well the bottle before purchasing, as in different parts of the Union several worthless preparations are gotten up with the evident de sign of being palmed off as our Bitters, having a similar bottle and label, and the directions, etc., taken oil verbatim, save the omittance of Dr. J. The modus operaudi of progressing and ever changeable Rheumatic pain, is imperfectly under stood by mankind, whether its location is the membrane or covering of the nerves, inflamed by derangement, (like the coating of an inflamed stomach.) or some disturbance of the electric fluid itself; certain it is that my “Electric Oil” is readi ly absorbed into, if it does not actually supply a needed deficiency in, and equalizes the circulation of that greut principle of human organization.
