DA IL Y SXJ jST. WcdufDilay Morning, April MS, ’5 8. | More Frost. We had unother slight frost yesterday morning, but so far as ere can hear it did no material damage to vegetation—or rather, we have not heard of its killing anything. But that it will injure eoitou •o some exteut, no one acquainted with the growth of that product can for a moment doubt, as even cold mornings, without any frost at all, will give it what the planters call the “sore shin,” and stunt it so much in its growth that it will take it some time to recover from it. Wc understand the frost a few days since had a very bad etlect on the cotton in some localities, causing it to turn yellow, and to look very sickly and puny, and in some places, even some of it is dying, but we think this does not exist to an extent that will perceptibly affect the amount of the growing crop. The weather was quite cool all day yesterday, and we are fearful there was another frost this morning, but we hope not a killing one. Tile Southern Citizen. Among all of our exchanges we find no more devoted advocate, or able defender of the South and her institutions, than the Southern Citizen, published by Messrs. Mitchell & Swann, at Nashville, Tenn., and as such wc take great pleasure in recommending it to our readers as a journal altogether reliable upon Seulhern interests, and one that should receive an extensive patronage from the South.— John Mitchell, the principal editor, is too well known to fume to need encomiums from any one to swell the measure of his fame as a writer and a patriot, and the fact of his being at the helm, is a suffi cient guaranty that the craft will steer only into safe waters. See prospectus. More Pretty Goads. Wc know that after our lady readers refer to. the advertisement of Messrs. Atkinson & Taylor, in to day’s paper, they will be all in a fever of excitement until they can get to theirstore to examine the rich display of goods that will shortly lie opened for their inspection. A rich treat is certainly in store for all ladies who like to look at and purchase tine goods. The Ladles Os our city, who have not yet availed themselves of the opportunity of learning to tit their own dresses, as taught by Mrs. Sturtevaut, will doubtless be glad to learn that she will be in the city again on the Ist proximo, for the purpose of open ing another class. Those who have re ceived instructions from Iter speak in the highest terms of her system. See adver tisement. 1). I’. Ellis is particularly anxious that some first rate gentleman or lady should draw a first rate prize in his first rate lottery, and the only chance for them to do so is to buy a first rate ticket. See advertisement. Messrs. Ayer & Gray will sell some very valuable negroes next Tuesday, at auction. See advertisement. Thu Troy Factory wishes to hire a good wagoner and a good ax-man. Any per son having such to hire should refer to the advertisement in another column. Immense Amount of Money on De posit in tills Country. In the banks of the four great cities of this country—New York, Boston, Phila delphia and New Orleans —there were last week on deposit no less than one hundred and twenty-eight and a quarter millions of dollars, an increase on the previous week of nearly two millions ot dollars. This does not show any great revival of business in the country at large. In Boston, previous to the late financial crisis, the amount on deposit in the various banks of the city was not much over fourteen millions of dollars ; it is now twenty and a half millions. The specie in the banks of the four cities last week was fifty-seven millions five hundred thousand dollars, the previous week, fifty-five millions eight hundred thousand dollars—an increase ot a million and a half in one week. In Boston, with in the past six months, the amount of specie has about doubled. —JJuston Trav eller, of April 17. PERUVIAN GUANO. COTTON—The market yesterday was not so ani mated and the prices paid were about the same as the day before, if any difference the market was easier, owing to the stringency of money matters, shippers being unable to negotiate to much ex tent. We quote extremes lu to 12c , and heard of the sale of one lot at 12} rt e. Sales of the day 101 bales. COTTON STATEMENT FOR WEEK ENDING APRIL 24. Stock on hand Aug. 31, 1857 4tU bales. Received past week ftli Received previously 7 2400-72571 bales. Total 71M02 bales. Shipped past week 515 Shipped previously 67021-68440 bales. Stock on baud 1&U10 bales. Our market the past week has presented a little more activity in Cotton than the previous week. ! The advices by the steamers Aragoon Wednesday, 21st, and Cannla, on Saturday. 23d hist., bringing ‘ advances, put a much better feeling in our market, j aud buyers acceded to the demand of Factors for au advance on last week’s prices. The amount of sales this week, though much larger than any | previous week of the season, has not tended to depress prices, but the market yesterday was stiff. Wo quote as extremes 11 to 12c. Occasionally we hoar of sales being effected at a bight r figure than wo report. Such prices are generally considered a style of guerrilla purchases, which constitute no ground for market quotations. 1 his style of cotton buying is only resorted to by those desiring to cut down high priced and raise low priced cottons to I au average below the regular market rate. Yes terday morning wo had another light frost, but from the host information we could get up to go ing to press, it was not sufficient to do any mate rial damage to the young crop. The wind con tinued to blow cold from the north throughout the entire day, and wo may possibly have another slight one this morning. The effect **f this cold snap has been to stiffen our market. Factors ap pearing rather indifferent to sell, even for 12c. Bacon continues to arrive in good quantities. Wo saw a beautiful lot of Hams, just received from Tennessee, in front of the store of one of our larg est bacon dealers, which was packed as neatly and the meat as well smoked as one could wish for. Not a day passes hut there are arrivals of inoie or less casks of this great staple of life. We have no change in prices to notice from last week. The stock on hand is sufficiently large to supply the present demand. The demand has been steady and regular, principally for consumption. Corn has undergone no change in prices since our last report, hut remains about the same in prices. The demand is confined to home consump tion principally. We quote 75 to 80c. in sacks. Flour remains about the sumo as at our last re port. M.ishants are very tender however, aud do not take hold as strongly as they would were the wheat crop less promising. At present, however, everything conspires to induce the belief of a still further reduction!, which tin re may he until it shall have reached a point where speculation can take hold and hold for advances. The geneial feeling in the Northern and Western States is, that wo shall have an abundant harvest of grain this year. We quote Flour, at extremes, ranging from $4 50 to $0 50 per bbl. In the Grocery business we have no change to notice. Our merchants continue their supplies large and well assorted, and every arrival of cars or steamers bring something fresh and nice for their customers. The same may he said of the Dry Goods trade, especially as there seems to be a greater rush just about now for wearing appa rel than for food. It is quite pleasant to bo on Broad street when the sun is out, clear and bright, aud see the number of ladies tripping to and fro, and the hundreds of busy clerks exhibiting the rich and costly fabrics which they have on salt*. The general contour of business indicates heal thy financial condition oi* our city, and one would never be reminded of the panic which has passed over our country by our merchants. Cheerful, happy and polite, they look as if a panic was nev er known to them; and we have the proud satis faction to say that none of them have failed t< meet their obligations. If so, it has never come to light. A visit to one of our largest manul'actuiing es tablishments, yesterday, displayed a largo and well assorted stock of Jeans, Linsoys, Stripes and Osnaburge—just the thing for our Southern trade Dealers in the country and other cities can here find every article to supply the wants of their cus tomers in this lino. Besides the above mentioned articles, au adjoining mill keeps a very large stock j of liomcspiius and Sheetings on hand. These j mills are doing a very handsome business at pres ent in cotton goods, hut are preparing for heavy fall orders. To our city merchants, it is needless to say anything, for they know the saleable quali ties of the goods made here. To those at a dis tance, we advise to make a trial of our city. THIHBH Watches are produced by the same sys tem that has made American Fire-Arms the best in the world. It substitutes the rapidity and precision of machinery for the slow and unrelia ble results ot handicraft. The factory consists of a series of machines devised expressly for this es tablishment, each of which works true to exact ness, turning out each part so as to he an accurate fit in any oue of a thousand watches. Absolute precision of time is nearly attained by these watches, as the inevitable result of their simplici ty and exactness of structure. The ease of their repair is obvious, as the makers have always on hand, for sale, the different parts of tho watch perfectly finished, to repair damages. Besides the watch heretofore offered to the trade, we are now making a second quality, inferior to the first only in having less finish in immaterial parts and a lighter case. This wo offer at a price ho moderate as to be within the means of every class, and we recommend it as sound and reliable, and greatly superior to imported watches of equal price The trade are cautioned against English and Swiss imitations with which the country is flood ed. Each of our best Watches is engraved on the plate. Appleton, Tracy A Cos., Waltham , Mast. } and is accompanied with a certificate of genuineness and perpetual warranty, over our own signature.
