White Frost. Quite a white frost was visible in this city ami neighborhood yesterday morn ing, but we have not heard of its doing any material damage to vegetation. Wc suppose some of the more tender plants in particularly exposed and low localities may have been slightly touched, but we think the damage from frost so far in this vicinity has not been to an extent to cause any uneasiness as to a shortness of any of the crops. To the Traveling Public. To those who contemplate visiting the North during the approaching Summer, we would say, you connot find a more expeditious or safer line of steamers ply ing between Savannah and New York and Philadelphia, or one olferiug better accommodations, than that advertised in our columns to day. The Maine Resolutions. We find the following in the Baton Rouge Advocate of the 21st : At the late session of our Legislature, Governor Wickliffe sent in to the Senate a series of insulting resolutions which had been forwarded by’ the Governor of Maine as the sense of that Legislature ou the subject of slavery. The Senate very properly refused to take auy notice of them, or even to allow a notice of their having been received to go upon their journals. In returning them to their original source, Governor Wickliffe ad dresses the following sensible and digni fied letter to the Governor of Maine. Its brevity is only excelled by its great taste : “Executive Office, ) Baton Rouge, La., April 17, 1858. j ••To his Excellency , the Governor of Maine: “Sik —The resolutions adopted by the Legislature of the State of Maine on the loth of April, 1857, aud by you forwarded to me, have, at your request, been laid before the Senate of Louisiana—and due consideration having been had thereon, ] have beeu requested by that body to re turn them to you. “Louisiana recognizes the constitution of the United States, as expounded by the highest judicial tribunals of the na tion, to be the supreme law of the land, and ranks obedience thereto as among the most solemn of the obligations which she assumed upon herself as a member of the confederacy. These resolutions arc es sentially aggressive and revolutionary in their tendency and aim, and seek the subversion of a compact which Lou isiana has plighted her faith to support. Addressed, as they are to her, she can not, therefore, but regard them as solici tations to treasonable disloyalty on her part, and as such, not only deems herself justified in repelling them, but feels that her honor would be deeply wounded were she to give them a place in her archives. “With due consideration, your obedi ent servant, Rout. C. Wickliffe.” Kllects of an Kartliqiinke at Sea— Remarkable Phenomena. The ship Pacific, Capt. Ladd, which left New Orleans April (itli, and arrived at this port this morning, reports that on April 17th, at 8.45 p. in., iu lat. 27 28. lon. 79 78, with a sea perfectly smooth she felt severe shocks of an earthquake; it commenced with a noise like distant thunder and kept increasing until it sounded like a heavy cannonade some few miles away; about the fourth or fifth shock it was so heavy that it shook the ship all over, as if she had struck the bottom, causing all the window panes and glasses to rattle and shake, and it seemed as if someone was rolling a large empty cask about the deck. The shocks lasted about twelve or fifteen minutes, but there was one heavy one. The day had been very sultry, and the sky had a very strange appearance at sunset. The earthquake, or rather the sound of it, was in a north and east direction from the ship There was no swell after the shocks, but on the contrary, the sea re mained perfectly smooth.— N. 15 Post, 28 d inst. May not this explain the great seajight, of which the Morning News gaves us an account some days ago ? There is a vari ance of a day or two in point of time, but locality is the same.— Savannah Hip. The Boston Post says of the money and stock market in that city : The speoio in State street increases slowly, but regularly, while the abun dance of New York funds seems undimin ished. We have no change to report iu the street rate or supply of money.— Some of the hanks are reducing their charges on foreign paper to a merely nominal percentage. Money is exceed ingly plentiful, with not the slightest indication, either at homo or abroad, of any unfavorable turn of the market. In business there is considerable activity, in spots, aud everywhere there is some thing done. But, omitting a few remarka ble exceptions, there is no lurge business in progress, and, speaking generally, dullness yot rules triumphant iu trade, money, and stocks. ANNUAL.
