[by bequest.] An Appeal for Mount Vernon. The following admirable appeal of the Ladies’ Mount Vernon Association of the Union should go to the heart of every patriot of tho land, and arouse new inter est aud zeal iu a glorious oause : Mount Vernon the property oi the Nation. —lt is with feelings of the highest gratification we announce to the publio, that the persevering efforts of the Ladies’ Mount Vernon Association of the Union, have been crowned with success commen surate with their sacred aims and lofty patriotism, and that they have at last se cured to the American people the privi lege of making tbo Home and Grave of Washington the property of the Nation ! On the failure of the Mount Vernon bill in the General Assembly of Vir ginia, wo renewed our overtures to Mr. Washington to sell the property to the Association. These overtures met with a favorable response, and on the 6th of April, a contract was signed by Mr. Wash ington, which obligated him to transfer Mount Vernon to the Association, on its cumplinuco with the following terms, via : The payment of two hundred thousand dollars, tor two hundred acres of land, includiDg the mansion, gardens, landing place, and, above all, the tomb. Eighteen thousand dollars to be paid on closing of contract, and the remainder of the sum, in four bond*, payable iD j early instalments, with the permission, after payment of the first bond , to pay to Mr. Wftfhington any amount of the bal ance due, in sums of not legs than five thousand dollars, which sums will la credited to the Association, in this man ner lessening (he interest. The title to the estate and possession to be given on payment of the prim ip ,1 and interest; and the privilege also grant ed of obtaining possession, on thirty day’s notice, at any lime the Auonatun may be ready to furnish the entire purchase money. The price asked for Mount Vernon by its proprietor, and which has never varied, has long been known to the pub lie, and the ladies of the Mount Vernon Association, in offering to become its par chasers, could not expect to acquire it upon other terms than those given as the ulti ma! mn, to Congress and to Virginia. Yet there is a concession made to the Association by Mr. Washington, as to the extension of time ; nnd a very important proviso, to save interest, wbiob can best be explained by the following letter nd dressed to the legal gentlemen who nego tiated the purchase on behalf of the Asso ciation : Richmond, April 7, 1858. To Win. //. Maefarland , Esq., and Oen. A. A. Chapman: OENTI.KMF.N—In tho negotiations you have recently concluded with me, on he ha'f of the Ladies’ Association for the purchase of Mount Vernon, tho payment of interest on the deferred instalments from the date of the contract, while 1 re tained possession of the property, wag the ouly serious difficulty between us. Having satisfied you tiiat I could not yield this point, you finally conceded it. As the contract is now closed, and 1 believe in a satisfactory woy to both par ties, it affords me plensure to say to you, that if the Association meets its engage ments with me on the first of January, 1859, aud thinks proper to pay, and does pay the other deferred instalments on or before the 2‘2d day of February, i859, as you iuform me they will probably be both willing nnd able to do, it is my intention, iu that case, to remit to the Association all the interest on ail the deferred pay ments. This 1 shall bo willing to do, partly as an inducement to the Association to ob tain possession of Mount Vernon at an early day, hut more particularly, as an evidence of my upppreciation of the mo tives that have aotuated the Ladies’ Asso ciation in the enuse it has undertaken. 1 have the honor to be, gentlemen, with the highest respect, Yeur obedient servant, JOHN A. WASHINGTON. Mora than half a century has now elapsed since Washington walked among us—u half century of neglect and ingrat itude to hit memory. Between the bro ken pledges of Congress, and the apathy of his mother State, the remains of the father of his country have lain unhonored liy the mausoleum voted in the hour of a Nation's grief, aud his Home and Grave, left to the late of private property, and accessible to the public, only through the forbearance or courtesy of its various private owners. Ever and anon, a voice was heard to protest against republican ingratitude, lor, ever and anon, the heart of this great nation seemed to throb with a remem brance of his virtues and of bis services, and tho priceless legacy he bequeathed. Hut, during the stern struggle* of a young Republic, this voice was unheeded, and since America bccuine a power on earth, it was either silenced by the din of party and sectional strife, or stifled by the mur murs of Mammon, until the generation*, which knew him not, were in danger of forgetting and wholly departing from these principles, which are the bulwark of our greatness, and those warning coun sels which can alone maintain our Union in safety. Rut that Providence which ha* ro often interposed for our rescue in the darkest days of the Republic, when the ship of State, with no master hand st the helm, rocked to and fro on the angry waves of sectional strife and bitterness, which theatened to engulf it; has stirred the heart of woman to revive, through the rescue of the sacred ashes of the Fath er of iiis Country, that love for hie mem ory, slumbering, but not dead, which could bo made all powerful, in regenerat ing uiul healing influences ! A call was made to the women of the .South, It gather around his grave sod become the Vestals to keep alive the fires of patriotism. Themotives were pure—the intentions generous—but they failed!— Ye, who watch the signs of the timet, know ye not wherefore? Washington be longed not alone to the South ! Again the call was made, and this time to the women of the Nation. Again it fad ed !—and wherefore ? The title and all the pou-er were to be farm to a Shite; and Washington belonged not to one State alone ! Devoted woman would be neither baf fled nor conquered ; but she only triumphs when the common homestead can be pro cured as a common heritage, for the es tranged children of a common father, the spell of whoso memory will yei have the power to reunite them around his hallow ed sepulchre. Unexpected success has crowned hrr efforts. Our country can be saved, on* and indissoluble forever—for woman has become her guardian spirit. Iu the sa cred groves of Mount Vernon she will {NO. -234.
