daily sun. Monday Morning, May 17, 1858. Mobile and Girard Rail Road. As will be seen by reference to our ad vertising columns the annual meeting of the stoebelders of the Mobile and Girard Kail Rond, will be held at the office of the Company in Girard on the 7th day of July next, at which time there will be an election for anew Board of Directors. The Weatiicr. I We are just now having a most delight ful spell of weather, just such weather as we wish and look for in the middle of May. Vegetation is looking fiuely, and the promise is of a most abundant harvest. With no backset or disaster to the grow ing crops of all kinds, the year 1858 will be remarkable in the calendar of time as :i remarkable crop year. ♦ — - Sentence Day. On Saturday last Judge Won ill passed sentence of death upon Samuel Hindi, convicted at the present term of the Su perior Court of this county, for the mur der of Michael Tracy. He is to be hung on the 2d day of July next, if Ids case does not go up to the Supreme Court. The day for the execution of James Thompson, convicted at the last term of the Court, and refused anew trial by the Supreme Court, was lixed for the 2d day of July. We understand that an effort will be made to obtain a respite by the Governor until the meeting of the Legis l.iture, as it is said that some evidence has been obtained since his trial, that would reduce the off ence to manslaughter. The trial of Thomas Terry, for the murder of young Doles, several years since, and which has been before the Court at almost every session since the offence, is set down for to day. • For the Daily Sun. 1 am glad that my pryisms have brought out a reply from Mr. Wilhelm, in re gard to the Gas lights of our city. 1 only desired to bring the facts as they existed before the Councilmen and the community, in the hope that a better state of things might be inaugurated. I am’ a tax-payer, and pay Mr. Wilhelm and the Gas Company my pro rata share of the expense necessary to lighting the streets of our city, and 1 feel that it is my prerogative to bring all delinquencies before the public eye, whether over my proper name or the nomme de plume of Paul Pry or Paul anybody else. This I have done, without the least knowledge that. I was pinching Mr. Wilhelm’s corns. If I have done him injustice I will certainly make him a public apolo gy. But 1 do not conceive that I have. That he may have directed the lamps to be cleaned I will not deny, but do deny that it was performed. And if he is res ponsible for the size of the light, which I do not believe, then I re-assert that the light is but little superior to an ordinary candle. It is my impression that Mr. Wilhelm has nothing whatever to do with the size of the light, and if not, of course no offence can be taken on that score.— But I think 1 could, did I choose to do so, point out to Mr. Wilhelm, or any one else sufficiently interested, somo few lamps not as clean as they might be by the application of a little water ; and pos sibly I could show him several lamps with doors left swinging open during the night and day, and one with the glass out. And I could occasionally poiut out to him several lamps bearing no light. I have nothing against Mr. Wilhelm as a citizen; have always respected him as an honest and industrious mechanic, and be lieve he has been imposed upon by those in liis e • ploy, in keeping the lamps in good order. Whether Mr. Wilhelm got off” the article about me, it is not for me to say. It smacks, however, of the wit of a certain amanuensis that we wot of— one who writes for the pay, and is fond of poetical quotations. Bo that as it may. the Gas question is not answered yet. — And if Mr. Wilhelm lias done his whole duty, no blame attaches to him.— It we have to pay for street lights we should have it, and if, when we do pay it, we can t get it, let’s drop the thing and apply that much money to the exten sion of the Mobile & Girard Rail Road. PAUL PRY. Tire Duer Channel. We announced iu our last number the discovery of anew channel at the east end of Dug Island, by Captain Duer, of the U. 8. surveying steamer Vixen. We now have tlie pleasure to inform the public that a further reconnaissance has been made in that harbor, with the follow ing results : At the entrance there is thirty-one feet of water ever the bar, leading to a sale anchorage of twenty four feet inside the Dog Island shoals. — From thence to “Pilot Cove,” the chan nel lias a depth of twenty-one feet to another superior anchorage of twenty four feet; and from thence to the pres ent ship anchorage at East Pass, opposite White Bluff, the channel is nineteen feet. Wo are gratified to learn that the or ders of the Department for the Vixen to proceed to Texas, have been counter manded, and instructions issued for u survey of the channel and bar this season. Though we do not doubt the accuracy of the above statement, yet an official survey will bring the importance of the subject to the prompt notice of Govern ment, and especially will attract the at tention of Middle and East Florida, who have long felt the want of a Gulf port ol capacity adequate to the wants of her commercial transactions. Apalachicola Advertiser. —— —-♦ —• Later from tHe Utah Expedition. Bt. Louis, May 10.—A dispatch from Independence announces the arrival there of Mr. Mason, who left (.’amp Scott on the 3d of March, Geu, Johnson was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Capt. Marcy. The health of the army was remarkably good. Pro visions were source, but supplies were expected from Fort Laramie. Mr. Mason was detained 17 days on account of a snow storm, lie mat Col. Hoffman’s command 140 miles beyond Fort Kearney. Twelve hundred troops have arrived in this city within three days, the greater part of whom will proceed immediately to Fort Leavenworth. The Republican, of this city, states that Captain Marcy would not be detained more than 10 days waiting re-iuforce tnents, when he would be in a condition to march to Camp Scott in 40 days. The trains were 10-ing a number of nnimals from cold. All the streams were over flowed. The report about the plains being cov ered with Indians is not confirmed. Singular Suicide, Wo learn from the officers of the steam boat Seliua, which arrived here yesterday evening, that a remarkable suicide was committed near Claiborne ou yesterday morning, by a passenger who came on board that boat from Montgomery. His name was James Taylor; he was a re spectable citizen living in the vicinity of Claiborne, lie took passage at Mont gomery for Claiborne, and on the boat arriving at the latter place was missed On his pillow, in his berth, was found a note addressed to his wife, the contents of which we did not learn further than that it stated he was unworthy of her, and purposed drowning himself. A gold watch and a set of mourning jewelry for his wife, and pocket knives and other small presents for his children, were also found in his berth—their names being carefully labelled upon the articles. During the trip it had been noticed by tho ofiieeis and others that he seemed troubled and abstracted, but they say that, he was calm and perfectly rational. — Mobile Tribune, 12//i inst. Another Sulci te Attempted. An eccentric individual was discovered in the act of taking off’ his clothes, pre paratory to a plunge bath from the river bridge, on yesterday tho 13th of May.— He was discovered in time to save him from the fatal leap, anil taken to a hotel. He was evidently laboring under mental aberration of some kind, and we learn that last night he attempted to cut a ne gro, and had a scrimmage with a police man, who lodged him in jail. We have heard him located in various places, un der the name of Hendricks. He evident ly is not in a fix for traveling.— Augusta Dispatch , 14//i inst. GOLD AND SILVER FOB SALE By 8. H. HI LI,.
