The LytWsTiiiAx Statue of Washing ton. —A correspondent suggests as a suit able site far Clark Mills’ nearly finished equestrian statue of Washington, ‘‘the centre of Pennsylvania avenue, in front of the Preseverance engine house.” We beg leave to differ with him, and to ex press a hope that the broad vista, reach ing from the Capitol to the Executive Mansion, will never be interrupted by any stationary object, however beautiful. As the works of art nnd public buildings .re now all East of the Executive Man sion, it strikes us that nt) appropriate site for the equestrian statue would be in the centre of the circle, in Pennsylva nia avenue, at the West end. This would ornament that rapidly-increasing portion of the metropolis, and would enable the Georgetown people to enjoy this flue work of art. The clerks of the House of Represen tatives are now installed in their new offices at the Southwestern corner of tho South Capitol extension. The requisite changes in tli# apartments have been made, and the rooms liavo been furnished in a neat and useful manner by those connected with the clerk’s office, and ex client taste, witli a commendable regard for economy and utility, has been dis played. From tlio Atlanta Intelligencer, 15th In.t. Tlie .Stabbing at the Military Insti tute. The letter of Col Brumby gives an au thentic account of the difficulty which took place, a few days ago, between two cadets. Wo are glad to be able to pub lish it, in order to correct tho numerous rumors afloat on the subject. Georgia Military Institute, t May 12th, 1858. f Mr. J. W. Duncan— Dear Sir: I notice in the Atlanta Daily Intelligencer of this (late, a statement (’‘brought down by the passengers on the Slate Road” to Atlau ta), relative to the stabbing of cadet P. T. Manning, by cadet Jesse Beall. To prevent incorrect rumors about this sad occurrence, l beg you to publish the following brief statement of the facts. Cadet Manning is the Ist Lieutenant of Company A, anil the In-pcctor of one division of the Company. After tattoo, on the night of the 11th inst., and after inspecting the rooms of his division, he went to the guard room and informed the “officer of the day” (cadet D. H Twiggs), in tlie presence of the officer of the gi urd and several oth.r cadets, that two cadets intended going out of bounds that night. The officer of the day a-ked Manning to give him their names (it being tbc duty of tlie officer of the day to prevent o idets leaving the premise- without permission fiom the proper authority), but Manning declined giving their names. One <r more of the ca lets present at the guaid room, who heard Manning’* report to Twiggs, inf run and Beall of the .act, and advised him nut to go out of bounds that night. The next moroing, immediately after breakfast, cadet Beall went to cadet Manning, in the pres- nee of a large num ber of cadets, and asked him if he re ported to ‘he officer of the day, the night previous, that two cadets intended going out of bounds ? Manning answered that he did, B. all rej led with an oath, and hi very insulting laugunge; which Man ning resented by striking B all wjih bis fist. IS all stepi ed back, and while Manning contiuuid to strike one nr two other blows with his fist, Beall drew his dirk nnd stabbed him. I whs informed of the fact in a few moments alter it occurred, but before I could go from my residence to the Insti tute, Beall escaped. It was Manning’s duty, ns a commis sioned officer, to give the officer of the day the information reported to him; but as the two cadet- had not yet committed tlie offenso which they contemplated, ho acted prudent nnd like a good officer in declining to give their names. It is due to the cadets and to the Insti tution to add, that this is the first in stance, as far os I know, in which a cadet has used a deadly weapon. Very respectfully, Your obedient servant, A. V. Brumby, Supt., &o. P. B.—The statement in your paper that Beall had liquor nnd invited Man ning to drink with him, is incorrect. A. V. B. GUWIIO fOSACCO.
