Tho Havana correspondent of the Charleston Courier, in a letter dated the 10th inst., gives the following account of a robbery recently committed near Ha vana : A most audacious robbery was commit tod at Oummbacoa tho. Tuesday before last. About dusk in the proceeding Monday evening, a Mexican gentleman, then resident at Guanabacon, received a visit from a stranger, who upon entering said, “1 am glad 1 have found you alone!” “Why, sir ?” demanded the Mexican gen tleman. “What is your name, and what is your business?” “I am the Asturice no,” the name of a noted robber, now in prison for his crimes, “nnd I want six ounces, ($102) at once!” was tho reply. “That is a small sum,” rejoined the Mex ican with a smile. “Had you not belter have more,?” “No!” said the stranger, “I require that amount to pay a debt; however, I will again visit you within twenty-four hours, nnd then I shall re quire a larger amount.” Receiving the six ounces, ho took his leave with nil tho ceremonious behavior customary among Spaniards. Next evening the Mexican gentleman bad Home guests, to whom he related the above event, but whom he could not in duce to remain with him, they advising him to procure a file of soldiers for his protection, took their departure. The gentleman, having examined his revolver, took his seat to awnit the coming of his promised visitor, lie camo within ten minutes, accompanied by six others, five of whom awaited outside, while one came in with him. As he entered ho sniil, “you see I keep my appointment. There are seven of uh, resistance will be useless, be pleased to let mo have what money you have in the house.” The Mexican, seeing the state of matters, went to the place where he kept his money and handed over to tho robbers S3OOO in gold, which was carried i.way between them; that evening tho Mexican removed to the Havana. Many of us, who had intended to reside this Summer at Guanabacon, to enjoy tho cool breezes and the Chalybeate liaths there, have, in consequence of tho above related event, “changed our minds.” “Yellow Jack” appears to have taken “leave of absence ; lie has been among the shipping, but I believe is not now there. Our city is unusually henlthy for the season. Weather seasonable and agreeable. Kencrnl Strike. In accordance with a custom which obtains in many localities, ou Monday last tiie Superintendent ou the Memphis and Charleston Railroad attempted to enforce a rule pou the employees in the workshop in this city, which, if curried out, would havo required the mechanics to labor eleven hours per day during the* summer months, instead of ten. Tiie workmen, however, took exceptions to the rule, and the consequence wus that a general striko ensued. The employees in the meantime havo held a meeting and passed the following preamble and reso lutions : WiiKREAS, An additional hour has been added to the hours of labor in tho M. & C. R. R. shop, contrary to tho established system in Memphis, and shops generally, in the United States; and, whereas, no remuneration is to he allowed for said additional hour, therefore ]tetolrecl, That we, employees iu the shops of tho M. & C. R. R. Cos., do pro test against said innovations as being unjust iu its executions, a trespass upon our rights; and, if acquiesced in by us, tending to the re-estublismcnt of the old nnd odious “twelve hour system.” It evolved, That we firmly refuse to work more than ten hours per day, (unless paid as over timel ami thnt we will use all peaceable and quiet means to prevent others from doing the same. We learn that considerable feeling ex isted last evening between the interested parties, who had arrived at no definite understanding, and, furthermore, that the otlicers of the company had given no tice that, unless the strikers acceded to the eleven-hour system by a given time to day, they would employ other work men in their stead. We trust that a re conciliation will he affected, and that the old employees and the company will find it to their mutual advantage to agreo up on some reasonable propositions.— Mem phi* Avalanche. Indemnity from Mexico. The Pennsylvania Inquirer says: We have a rumor that a demand is about to lio made upon Mexico for an in demnity for certain private claims pre ferred by a citizen of the United Htntes, with nil offer to assume the indebtedness and pay several millions more, provided Mexico will cede to us another portion of hor territory. Alas! for our neighbors. They are in a sad condition indeed. Con vulsed ut home, nnd threatened from abroad, with a treasury utterly exhausted, it is not a matter of much surprise, thnt the Government is constantly changing. The only wonder is Shat the various States have contrived to hold together so long. Rut tho days of the Republic are evident ly numbered.
