A regular race across the Atluntio is said to havo taken place between tho steamers Arago and Saxonia, which left New York simultaneously on tho Ist of May. When they had been at sea four days tho Arago got ahead and fired two guns in triumph, but iu a few days the Saxonia resumed the lead, and fired throe guns in triumph. Thu Saxonia finally reached Cowes four hours ahead of the Arago. I.ater from I'tali. A loiter from Fort llridger, dated April 16th, contains tho following items of im portance : A United Slates Commissioner, Mr. Kane, arrived here about the 26th of March, from Salt Lako City, with dis patches. Ho afterwards returned to tho eily, where he remained a few days, nnd on tho 6th of April returned to this Fort, and after a short interview with Governor fuiuming, the latter agreed to accompany him to the capitol on the morrow. Accordingly on the 6th, Governor Gum ming attended only by Mr. Kane and hi* carriage driver, took his departure for tho Holy City, intending to go through in two days. He did so, and entering tho city on the Bth, found a largo hall ready nml beautifully fitted up for his reception. Brigham Young received him with an appropriate speech, which was responded to hy tho Governor in a true Democratic and feeling manner. lam sorry 1 cannot furnish you a copy, but will do so hy next express. We look daily for his re turn. He was treated with tho utmost civility and respect. We look daily for Col. Johnston to issue orders for entering the city as tho road is now passable. The condition of the troops hero is unite deplorable, tho rations arc getting very short, tho men only receive thirteen ounces of flour per day, and thu meut rations consist of tho few old surviving work oxen who lived through the winter, alter hauling our supplies to this plnco. Beaus, rice, coffco and sugar, at much smaller allowance than prescribed by law, servo to furnish tho balance. Tho men, after experiencing a winter almost un paralleled for severity, remain quite weak in bodily strength, but in tho best of spirits, ready and anxious to complete the march against the city, oven with tenfold odds, and at u moment's warning to obey our country’s call, nnd only awnit the “fortune of war.” The prices demanded by the traders in this Territory lmvo become seriously alarming. Flour is now selling ot $1 per pound ; bacon, sugar nnd cofi'ee at $1 per pound and salt (very scarce) at the famishing price of $1 per pound; tobac co (very inferior) ot $;! per pound ; tea SH; saleratus $2. and everything else in tho Bamo proportion. — - Ocfftii Mull Service* Tho House Coraniitteo on Post Offices have decided to reporta bill for tho ocean mail service, it will embrace the follow ing schedule: 1. Collins line to ho authorized to run to Southampton instead of Liverpool. 2. The llavro lino to be contracted with for ten years, at two dollars per mile. 3. A line to Gluckstadt, via Plymouth and Rotterdam, for ten years, at two dol lars per mile. 4. A line from New Orleans, via Hava na, Bermuda, Fuyal, nnd Santander (Spain,) for ten years, nt two dullais per mile. , The expense of these lines is not to ex ceed seven hundred thousand dollars per annum. This sum is stated to ngreo with the amount reported by tho Com mittee of Ways and Mean*, on tho 10th May, for this service for the fiscal year. The estimated receipts of postages by European mails for the year is just this amount. All letters by private ships are to be charged the same as by mail ships, and no letters nrn to be sent out of tho United .States hut through the Post Office. Tho Special Minister from Venezuela, Honor Ureccuo, sent to this government to attempt, a settlement of tho reclama tions of American citizens, founded on their expulsion from Avis Island, famil iarly known as the Shelton or Bird Island claims, has presented letters of recall, and will return to Laguayra hy the next vessel. Mr. Breccno had previously been dismissed by the President for a broach of his diplomatic privilege, and of inter ventional comity, in publishing a pam phlet statement of the case as viewed by iiis government. This was regarded by tho President nnd General Cass as an appeal to the people from the action of the Executive, not to ho tolerated. Hr. B. was therefore dismissed, as M. Pous sin, Mr. Molina and Mr. Crumpton were; bill, perceiving his error, the Minister apologised, nnd wa * permitted to presont letters of recall. —•- ♦ The ;iiarle.to Ntniidard. With this number will terminate, under its present direction at least, the exist ence of the (.'hiirlestou Standard. Started originally as a political paper there lias come to be some diflorenco of opinion bo tween tho prenunt proprietors, and as it can continue no decided course without conflicting with the views of some of them, it has been thought best to oiler it for sal*', and suspend its publication until anew direction can bo organized. It will be seen by reference to a notice nt tho head of our news column that tho sale will take place at public auction, on thu 22*1 of Juno, unless it shall bo sooner sold, ami it is probable, therefore, that a resumption tin#y occur ns early as the Ist of July.— Stnwt'nd of Sunday.
