DAILY BUN. Wednesday Horning, June 1858. We are under obligations to Captain S. 11. Hill,-of Harnden's Express, for Memphis papers of the 29th ult., for which he will accept our thanks. New Advertisement*. It will soon be time to begin to put up fruit for future use. It will bo seen by reference to our advertising columns that Mr. R. M. Aldworth has just received a lot of Ludlow’s Infallible Patent Fruit Cans, for preserving fruit in its natural state. We examined them yesterday, and think they will do. Try them, if you want fresh fruit all the year. Mr. Aldworth has also been appointed Agent for a patent rotary Egg Whip, which is certainly a great labor saving machine. See advertisement. Tax payers of the city, who wish to save cost, would do well to consult our advertising columns. Messrs. Danforth, Nagel & Cos. have received anothor supply of Kerosene Oil Lamps. See advertisement. Persons wishing to visit the Springs of Virginia will find that the fare has been greatly reduced, by reference to the ad vertisement of the General Superintend ent of the Montgomery and West Point Railroad. See advertisement of negro for sale, by Messrs. Harrison & Pitts, auctioneers. See advertisement of Cook, Washer and Ironer wanted. C. F. Ncuffer is selling Spring Hats at cost for cash. Now is the time to buy a bargain. It will be seen by reference to our ad vertising columns that Mr. John D. Ar nold has opened a beef market on Warren street. Every body knows John D.— Nuff ced. See advertisements of E. W. Moise, Esq., of houses to rent and negro to hire in another column. Fire--Incendiaries About. On yesterday morning, about three o’clock, our citizens were aroused by the cry of tire, and upon proceeding to the spot, the residence of Capt. Charles H. Mygatt, on the corner of Jackson and St. Clair streets, was found to bo burning inside. When first discovered it had evi dently been burning for some time, as the walls were charred and almost burnt through from the floor to the roof. Capt. Mygatt was awakened by the smoke in the room where himself and lady were sleeping, when he sprung from his bed and found the flames had made great progress, when he gave the alarm, and the citizens and Engine Companies soon appearing on the spot, the building was saved from entire destruction, though in a very damaged condition. It tire was evidently the work of an incendiary, as the fire was placed between the plastering and the weatberboavding, on the north side of the house, and before discovered it had burnt through to the other side of the house, and had burnt through the wall on the south side. The furniture was mostly saved, though in a damaged condition. The Jarnage to property was about two thousand dollars, —that to the house being covered by insurance, but we regret to learn there was no insurance on the furniture. The house being entirely of wood, its being saved with as little dam age as it was, shows most conclusively the efficiency and energy with which our Fire Companies perform their duty. City Cemetery. Eds. Sun: Will you not call the atten tion of the City Council to tho fact that Goats have easy access to the Ceme tery of the city, and are doing considera ble damage to the flowers and shubbery of the same. Access is bad by way of the steps on two sides of the inolosure. — We trust you will present the subject through your columns in such a way ns will prompt the Council to immediate action towurd the suppression of the nui sance. CITIZEN. Chief Justice Taney. There is a rumor that the venerable Chief Justice Taney is about to resign bis seat on the bench of the U. S. Supreme Court. The Washington correspondent of the Press writes: The rumor of the resignation of Justice Taney is again revived, and a number of names are suggested in connection with the vacancy. Some of your jurists will doubtless bo looking forward to this, of all the judicial positions, the most desira ble. The venerable Chief, beloved and revered by nil parties, is unquestionably more feeble than usual, and, although as clear in his intellect almost as he ever has been, is known to look to repose and retirement. You may be well assured that there is some ground for the rumor that he contemplates a separation from the Supreme Court. Attorney General Black, Justice Ellis Lewis, Reverdy John son, James A. Bayard, are nil canvassed in connection with the position. Washington New*. Washington, May 31.— Nothing of im portance was transacted in Congress to day. In tho Senate tho resolulions about the recent British outrages in tho Gulf were postponed until Friday. A IIO( SKIIOLI) HOOK. A WOMAN’S TIfOrOHTS ABOUT WOMEN, by the author of John Halifax, Gent. One of the best book* of the season, witli no no tion or romance, hut calculated to do much good. It treats on topics that Interest all women In a manner all will like and readily comprehend. Wo have nothing of interest to notice in our market for tho past week. It has been one simply of masterly inactivity. There have bum a few light transactions in Cotton at very irregular prices. About 600 bales have changed hands during the week at prices ranging from 11 to \\%c. The accounts from Europe per the ludian were received iu tho city yesterday, and reported tho market unchanged from former quotations. Holders are unwilling to accept the current rates at the present time, and buyers can not see a sufli cieut margin to authorize anything better. Tho prospects of the growing crops are quite flatter ing. We hear of some sections in Alabama whore rain is needed, but still the crop is not suffering. lu all other branches of trade there is a burden some quietness, and anything but satisfactory. The supply of Bacon is very large, anti those hav ing to purchaso can make very good bargains by applying soon. The stock iu other branches is lull and large and at the usual scale of prices. Money is still very difficult to obtain. The banks seem to be doiug but a limited business iu dis counts, and what they do is only ou tirst class and prompt paper.
