New Advertisements.
A pretty foot is the admiration of al
most everybody, and no foot is pretty
without it is encased in a pretty boot or
shoe. A pretty boot is the handiwork
only of a good bootmaker. Mr. Thomp
son, whose card appears iu our columns,
is a good bootmaker. Verbum nut.
A pretty bonnet sets off a pretty face
to great perfection, and as for that mat
ter, a plain ono too. Messrs. Rothchild
it llro. have a lot of perfect “ loves of
bonnets,” which they propose to sell at

The Vigilance Committee.
Although it was generally understood
that the Vigilance Committee would bo
attacked, and an attempt made to drive
them from their position, yet, up to the
time we write, they hold the same undis
puted their fortifications in
and around the State Arsenal, near Jack
son Square. The meeting of the Com
mon Council, in secret session, resulted,
wo believe, in their giving the Mayor
power to act as he might see fit in the
emergency. This brought about a con
ference between tho Mayor and the Vigi
lance Committee, which was interrupted
by an alarm outside, and finally resulted
in nothing being accomplished. The po
sition of the Committee, which had not
been sufficiently fortified before, was now
soon placed iu an almost impregnablestate
by the running out of artillery pieces, so
that they could pour a sweeping fire down
each avenue leadings to the buildings
which they occupied. Tho guards were
doubled, and a system of barricading
commenced, which before night gave a
very warlike appearance to tho usually
staid old Court buildings and State Arse
nal. During the drilling and handling
of arms, several accidents occurred, which
were, however, of a trifling nature. The
mustering out of the military in Lafay
ette Square, and rumors of an attack
from that quarter, kept the outposts of
the Committee sharply on the lookout,
and sufficed to show, however, that were
an attack to be made, how capable they
would be to repel it. The brass piece
which had been stationed at the corner of
St. Peter and Royal, was wheeled back
into St. Peter street, and a good barri
cade of plank placed before it. A gun
immediataly iu the rear was placed front
ing the river and commanded the ap
proach from it. At the corner of St. Pe
ter and St. Claude streets was placed a
similar piece, looking down into Chartres
street, being barely sighted over a double
stone square block breastwork, which
had been made from the blocks of the pave
ment near by. Just in the rear of this was
placed a gun, smiling down St. Claude
street, which made the eyes of the people
wince as they passed along to the Levee.
In St. Anthony street, running in be
tween the Cathedral and the Arsenal,
were placed two guns, pointing either
way, with plank barricades in front. At
each of the guns were placed a squaJ of
some eighteen to twenty men, who stood
ready at a moment’s warning to bristle
up in solid phalanx. Towards evening
drays laden with cotton were discovered
slowly crawling up to windward, and is
suing from St. Ann street, dumped their
load almost under the nose of the old
hero of t'halmette, and backed out again
for more. A breastwork of the bales was
then formed under the direction of some
forty or fifty men, who, with musket and
side arms, stood silent lookers-on, and
keeping tho sometime over-curious crowd
back. After this breastwork was finished,
which has for an extremity the iron rail
ing of the church and tho other of the
square, another barricade was made at
St. Peter street, at its junction with the
square, and in fact the cotton was used
for various purposes of defense. During
the day tho Committee caused to be ar
rested several patties charged with of
fenses, most of whom were released.
We learn that a member of the Vigi
lance Committee, who was pointed out by
some spy, charged with being the rammer
of the gun which was fired in the morn
ing, was knocked down and dragged into
the City Hall, and finally placed in the
lock-up. Will tho Committee submit to
this? It was rumored about yesterday
that the Council had, in their secret ses
sion, appropriated a large amount of
money for the purchasing of side-arms,
etc. Soon afterward, however, a crowd,
headed by an elderly gentleman, went
down St. Charles street, and pitched into
Ben Kitteredge’s establishment, on St.
Charles, aud by the mere enrolling of
their names they became the sole owner
of any piece of cutlery which might strike
their fancy. It was rumored last night
that Mayor Waterman had retired, and
given the police authority iuto the hands
of Gen. Tracy, and that the Chief of the
Police had been instructed by warrant to
take one and all of tbe members of the
Vigilance Committee and bring them be
fore the proper tribunals. The military
were still organized at 10 o’clock on La
fayette Square.
We have since learned that all the
troops above Canal street had dispersed,
by order, and had returned quietly to
their respective homes. We visited the
camp of the Vigilants and found it all

The annual examination of the Cadets
of West Point Military Academy, is now
in progress before the Board of Visitors
appointed by the President. Lieutenant

Affair d'Honcnr.
A duel took place yesterday, iu New
Orleans, between Col. E. H. McDonald,
late of the Nicaraguan army, and Capt.
E. H. Maury, of this city, in which both
the parties were slightly wounded, ns we
learn by a telegraphic dispatch—the for
mer in the leg, the latter in the arm.—
Wo sincerely rejoico that no worso result
occurred, as both the gentlemen are highly
estimable men, much esteemed by a large
circle of friends here.
The weapons used were double-barreled
shot guns, loaded with ball—distance 40

dies, read this, from a physician who has practiced
since 1826—(too well known for comment:)
Oenttemai —At intervals during thirty years
past, my wife has been subject to rheumatism of
the most violent east—’ say four times a year)—
sometimes so severe as 11 make it necessary to ad
minister large doses of the tincture of guincum j
and morphia, and to rock her like an infant in a i
largo rocking chair, to induce any repose. Having
frequent correspondence with my son, (No. 103 [
Chestnut street, of your city,) I informed him of {
an attack she hail about tho middle of last month, J
(January,) which was of such severity as to com- j
pletely paralyze the system. lie, iu his anxiety i
for his mother's welfare, seut me a bottle of your ‘
Electric Oil; hut as I am one of tho practitioners j
of medicine in our place, and not a proselyte to
any kind of patent medicine, I did hesitate to give
it a trial: however, on reflection, I concluded to
try it, which I did, et persona, directly up to the
letter, and after the third or fourth application
she became rather passive, and before one-third of
the bottle was used, not a single vestige of the
disease remained in the system, and she still con
tinues well, although she rode out a distance of
fourteen miles without a renewal of any of the
symptoms. I therefore feel it my duty, for the
Bake of sutfering humanity, and also fully believ
ing that merit, under all circumstances, should be
rewarded, to forward this testimonial. I am,
