Mr. Seward, of Georgia, objected, and tho IJouso refused to suspend the rules for the admission of the report. The news by the Black Warrior of the arrest of tho Captain of the Styx, creates considerable rejoicing, and lias spiked tho guns of Burlingame and others, wjio are loaded with war speeches. The Secretary of War has dispatches from Col. Johnston, coufjrming the report that (lov. Cuiniuiug has been driven out of Salt Lake City. Mr. Bcrnbisel doubts it. Upon consultation with each other, the democratic Senators have resolved to ex tend the session if possible till after gov ernmout receives intelligence from Eng land with reference to the difficulty about the British cruisers. It. is believed such intelligence may arrivo by the 14th inst. Senators hope to be able to induce tho House to acccdo to this, and therefore will not probably act upon the House amendment for extending the session until Thursday before Saturday or Mon day morning. All the New York Commodores are here, aud internecince war of conflicting interests keeps Washington in a state oi excitement. Vanderbilt and Webster hold, it is said, by a contract with Nica ragua and Costa Kicn, possession of the Transit route, mid of tho river and lake boats, to which they have already ac quired all the title of Garrison and Mor gan. They propose to open the Transit if they can get the mail contract. There is greut anxiety among the Pan ama Railroad and Pacific Mail Steamship Company as to the action of our govern ment. Huberts is reported to havo se cured the patronage of tho Credit Mobi lier by a bargain with its smart repre sentative, Felix Belly, whose cookery, wines and fandangos have enabled him overywhero to defeat the innocent diplo macy of Uncle Bam. Tho departments have not yet received any oflicial confirmatory of dispntches from Washington and Augusta, Georgia, to the effeet that a British cruiser had fired into uu American vessel and killed a man. There is great excitement here about it. Tho Uniou this morning pub- / lislies a dispatch from Augusta, and has a short leading editorial headed “Xho first gun fired.” Lord Napier has been to the departments for information, and has telegraphed to tho British Consul at Savannah. In the House Select Committee, of which Mr. Florence is chaii man, ap pointed to investigate certain charges in connection with the sale of the bunking house of the Bank of Pennsylvania for Post Office purposes, have brought their labors to a close. They Bay nothing ap pears to justify even suspicion that Mr. Campbell, late Postmaster General, was at all interested, save in the honest dis sliarge of his official duty, and that no improper or corrupt influences, in the judgment of tho Committee, operated on any officer of the government in any transaction connected with tho purchase and sale of that property, excepting those which attach to John Miller, lute Post master of Philadelphia, who received the total sum of $28,000, puid him at differ ent times by Mr. Allibonc, tho former President of the Bank of Pennsylvania, given, so Mr. Allibono alleges, as a gift, reward, or a commission for his service in bringing about a satisfactory tormina (ion of the purchase of the banking house by the government. Tho committco re cummcuded no action, and ask to be dis charged from uny further consideration. Fight with the Cnmniiche Indiana. Lato accounts from Texas speak of a desperate encounter between Capt. Ford and bis Hungers anil a large body of the Camanclics, in tho Northern part of tho State. Tho fight was a running one of six miles, and resulted in the defeat of the Indians, sixty-six of whom were kill ed, soveral wounded, and seventeen taken prisoners. Three hundred horses were also captured by the whites. Capt. Ford’s loss was only two killed and two wounded; one of the killed was awhile, and the other an Indian who fought under Ford.
