The brig and cargo were condemned and ordered to he sold within ten days.’ For the Daily Sun. Columbus, July 10, 1858. .Mrs.ir.i. Ktiitor* : lu your strictures upon the great parade and eclat manifested ut the burial of the Into criminal Thompson, there are many who will join you—and I for one—not that ho should not have had a decent burial, in this our noble and glorious country of freedom, for that is a right we cannot rend from the vilesi wretch on earth ; but most certainly the eft'ect of such demonstrations upon the morals of the country is undouhtably a bad one. Truly tho strong arm of the law becomes disrobed of half its terror, and those hereafter who see this prece dent, and would violate the law, would seek redemption and protection from ig nominy and disgrace under the gaudy wings of a Catholic Priest. Therefore, if the shame and disgrace of death upon the gallows he removed, what else is (here but death alone, with the prospect of great honor to the dead, to deter men from the vilest and most brutal outrages known in the history of crime? Do you not believe there are many low and mean enough to bo w illing to die a death upon I lie g .Hows, if they should be honored with fifty-one pnll-bcarere and a long procession of mourners, and other great almw, in conducting their remains to their final resting place? What, then, would he the effect upon tho morals of tho com munity ? Hob the law of its terrors, and who will fenr it ? flow truly, then, would Horace’s remark apply, “Quid legu •line moribus vaiuv proficiunt.” Os what avail would he the laws of the country without the morals lo sustain them and the fear lo cause them to be respected ? 1 agree with Mr. Cullinan that Thomp son had a right (o a burial, hut not in the manner in which he, in bis most lioly reverence, saw fit to give it. If he (Mr. C.) is a law-abiding and law-loving citi zen of the United States, then, in my opinion, il is his duly to do all ho can to enhance the respect of American citizens fur American laws, and he surely must plainly see that such a course us that pursued by him will not have that, bill decidedly the contrary effect. Did tho civil conflict with the religious law upon (his point? Then surely, as a pastor, it were his duly lo give preference to the latter. But as it does not, 1 am sure that I express the minds of many when 1 say that he is wrong. Surely, the culprit is entitled to forgiveness for his crime, if his Maker see fit to grant it; but his granting it does not by any means require that his body should be disposed of in such a manner as to beget a disrospecl to laws regulated for the wholesome gov eminent of a nation With you, Mr. Editor, 1 did not think he would attempt to defend or justify ids proceeding! on the occasion, pnr ticularly when it became so evident to every one what Ihe effect would be upon the minds of the people, but rather that he would prefer refraining from any such demonstrations in future. Hut his action iu (he matter would naturally lead one to believe that he intends to invite all viu lators of the law into his Church to shield them from the disgrace attendant, upon paying the penalty of the lnw. und event ually to protect them against tho law it self. D were vain for him to think, by such a course as this, to add numbers to his Church or his belief. It may bring a few scape-graces who may bo induced to believe that they can obtain a remission of their sins while on earth, and who, like drowning men, will catch at -draws, but rio healthful condition of the Catholic Church can spring (at least, in this com inanity) from such rottenness as this.— The whole proceedings were ridiculous in the extreme, and were only calculated to throw disrespect upon the laws and dis credit upon ourselves for permitting such au (outrage is the only name 1 see fit for it) to he perpetrated among us. Murderers hereafter may expect to have their souls delivered from Purga tory for a few dollars, and their crimes blotted out from the book of life and through tickets to the choice seats iu Heaven. Who will care what he does or how many crimes are committed, if he can obtnin absolution at any time, at the option of the Priest? Will not our cata logue of crime increase forever, and all sorts of deeds be committed, all laws overrun and destroyed, the whole country relapse into a brutal state of barbarism, in which the Pope will he supreme dicta tor, and those who do not chooHe to kiss his toe be persecuted to the ends of the earth ami die the death of in&rtyts?— Yes, sir ; then now in the bud, ere it un folds its petals to the strengthening sun, it becomes our duty to crush thiß poison ous flower and prevent its growth, ere the whole atmosphere of the Union is infected witli itw deadly miasma. If by no other means it con be prevented, then let it. fall into Ihe hands of the mob and destroy the worm that is gnawing at the root of our country, ere it devout’ the peace and happiuess of the land forever A PROTESTANT. From tbs Columbia Carollnlau Homicide In Cheater. Chkhtbu, July 10.— Mr. Editor: On yesterday evening, after supper, J. 1. Robert Wilson, who lived about four miles above this towu, was killed by his step son, John O. Darby. It is said that Wil son was essaying to hand-cuff his \rife, Darby’s mother, and take Iter up stairs for the purpose of cowltiding her, when Darby, who is a young man of about nine teen years old, and lived iu the family, interferced, and was attacked by Wilson with a drawn bowie knife. Darby re treated from the bouse and round it, Wil son following him closely, with fell in tent, when Darby again entered the house, jerked up a loaded shot-gun, aud discharged tho contents into the breast of Wilson, killing him instantly. Os course liquor had a large share in this most de plorable business. Darby came (o town last night, and surrendered himself to the proper authorities. Y'ours, hastily, Fii.
